Firmware Version 2.00 - Official Press Release

Why the hell is my PS3 turning itself on 30 seconds after turning it off? I'm not touching it, nor am I using Remote Play.

Happening to anyone else?

Same here but I have Remote Play turned on... Except I'm not using my PSP to login at all...

Well it appears the Wake-on-LAN feature puts the PS3 in a WiiConnect24-like status (as expected). In standby the PS3 is now actually on to a certain degree as you can hear the CPU fan barely idling. It's a very cool feature, but I'm going to disable it since I don't care for additional wear-n-tear on my consoles.

Same here, but I will keep it on for Uncharted tomorrow :D

What is so hard about it? nothing at all, all you do is click and read

you get WAY too defensive when it comes to defending the ps3. Seriously man it's a lousy addition that's all I'm saying, it's a waste of ram and time IMO. I don't think it'll help sell anything it's not really all that clear. How would the average person know how to turn it off? Hell most people didn't even realize folding at home has an auto-start feature. The little blurbs aren't that clear, and even if they were I don't think people care.

THREAD TITLE UPDATE PLEASE!!

Also, question:
STEALTH EDIT FAILED. MS/WII JOKE DERAILED :/ :P

I mean, how does remote start works? It HAS to be connected to the internet in order to start, right? If so, its connected even when its off?

Okay, grouping is easily the best feature of this update. It turns your game menu from a messy clash of animations to a an all you can eat buffet of awesome. Until there are more PSN games, I'll forego sorting by genre. But clearly separating demos from PSN and PS1 games is the best thing yet.

Sorry, did not mean to come that way from my post :D

Also, question: Does this mean that PS3 is the first "Always Online" system aka beating Microsoft and Nintendo (WiiConnect24 yet not 24) to the punch?

It would appear when it is off it is still connected to the PSN. That's why on your PSP you have to login with the same username/pw. That's the only feasible way to link the 2 devices from the internet. Sony is probably done with Remote Play for a while, but I would really like them to develop a desktop application that performs a similar routing duty between the PSP/PS3. Since my PC at home will most likely be on during the day anyways, it would be nice if the PSP could tell my PC to send out the Wake-on-LAN signal across my LAN (that way the PS3 could be completely off and get powered on).

Everything else about the update is pretty nice although I think having both a Network and Playstation Network tab is dumb/redundant.

What's actually better with the new video chat room? (No PS3 access atm)

I don't know because I never tried it before the update, but I just chatted with m3wthr33 and it's pretty cool.

Hey, did anyone else separate Eyecreate from the other stuff? I put it in a folder called "applications". Also, is there a way you can use your own pictures for the game folder icons?

i think its for stuff like HOME and other specific PSN services.

I just disabled remote start up since my PS3 somehow managed to turn itself on even though my PSP was off and my PS3 controller was lying flat on the table next to me.

it's not really "better" per se, they just changed the interface. it puts you in one of the white rooms from the PS3 ad's

It would appear that Sony has activate Skynet. You thought you were curing cancer all this time. What you've done is fold yourself into certain doom.

The option icons/menus are streamlined and the background is now the "White Room" rather than the black wave. The white room is a stylish touch and makes it a bit easier to see things.

TONX was saying it was smoother too. IIRC, when we were chatting his bandwidth was showing as 1.1 mbps when I remember the bandwidth being significantly less for those who have cameras before (like around 400 kbps).

Unfortunately, there seems to be no host migration yet which is one of the things I wanted.

EDIT: BTW Wollan, I have a friend's request pending for you. You should check your messages.

I think you're being a little shortsighted about the potential here. First, in it's current state they allow you to turn it off anyway. Second, and more importantly, this thing has got to be nothing more than a standard RSS feed reader, so I'd wager on an upcoming enhancement that will let you have it display any RSS feed you choose.

Third, there's also the potential here for creating a whole library of XMB widgets, if you will.

Speevy is a beautiful man. Although It's a little disappointing that the audio and video aren't synced in the video chat. (Although the tradeoff would be a very delayed audio)

I like this update, it solved one of my problems which was sorting of games.

I have PSN Games and Game Demos.

I dont really have any PS1 games yet, I need to order Twisted Metal 2, but that folder will be just PS1 Games (or PSX).

and I need to start adding people to the friends list, just today I realized the benefit of adding people on XBL.

About Wake On LAN:

When I turn off the PS3 with the wake-on LAN enabled, the PS3 has the red standby light on like normal but now I can also see that my network light is also on and flashing.

After a minute, the PS3 just turned on. It's giving me a message saying that "If you do not establish a remote play connections within a certtain period of time, the PS3 system will turn off automatically." It prompts for the PS button. I haven't touched it yet. I'm gonna see how long it waits until it turns off again.

About 2 minutes later it turned off. The network light is still on. Oh wait, It just started up again. Same screen as before. It seems to be in a low power mode, periodically checking for a connection. Either that or my PS3 is freaking out with my router and thinks something is trying to connect.

Anyways, my PS3 is never off anyway so I don't have to worry about it so much but just an FYI for everybody.

What m3wthr33 means is that I'm the ugliest SOB you ever met. I actually point the Playstation Eye at my face to register extra trolls in my EOJ deck.

can anyone offer any insight as to whether or not the theme that comes with ps3 firmware 2.0 is available for psp?

(sorry if this question has already been asked, didn't have to to tread through 14 pages)

thanks for the help :)

Yep, same thing here. Like I said above, I just disabled remote startup for now.

Man, stealth updates make up half the fun of this! I just noticed the option for new XMB fonts. I like rounded more.

Also, I dug in my desk drawer and pulled out a spare memory stick and SD card, just to fill the memory card holes on my PS3.

Oh! Forgot to test Singstar and Buzz! BRB.

they need to fix that.

Well, Singstar had NO change. Disc swapping still broken. I'll make a comment about that.

However, Buzz is hopeful! It auto-detected the buzzers without having to replug them in. I'll see if it freezes.
Edit:
Posting from my PS3. Buzz still freezes on the intro. So no go, there.
By the way, I have to say, the rounded font looks BEAUTIFUL on the on-screen keyboard, even though I'm typing from a USB keyboard.

Yeah guys, I'm having the same problem with my ps3 turning itself on myself. I just diabled the feature for now.

Ok. This allows for re-sorting pictures, games, and music... Awesome.
Themes are a random cool addition.
And now I can cue up music instead of having to find songs one at a time. Nice. (Basically listing playlists twice because they solve two problems).

PS. Systems turning on by themselves is a problem for some systems with wake-on lan. Lets see if we can find a solution for this...

FOr those who are having their ps3s turning on every few minutes. What brand of router do you own? I used to have this problem with one of my servers on which i had enaled wake on lan. The problem i had was that some pcs on my network would send out discovery packets in order to find other devices connected to the local network. sometimes these packets are mistaken for wakeon lan packets. there's nothing you can do other than wait for another upgrade. or put your ps3 on a different subnet.

It's cool that they added grouping but damn is there a way to edit where things should go to in a faster way than going through each item and changing the Album info? I've literally got hundreds of pictures that I'm dreading going through and editing. Cool feature but damn if that isn't tedious.

I just went through the User Manual for 2.00. I've found a little change. If you go to PlayStation Network > Checking PlayStation Store Usage you can see your "active services" and "View Subscriptions". You can also set your account to automatically add funds via a credit card if there are insufficient funds.

Interestingly there is nothing about the Information Board in the new manual. There are also parts of the manual that hint at a larger than 50 name capacity for your friends list, so see if that's true.

37% after an hour and ten minutes. Why do these updates take so long to download?

Mine took less than 3 minutes. Somethings up with your connection. This was the fastest download I've ever had on the PSN, especially a firmware update.

I was just about to post something similar to this. If the PS3 wake-on lan is based off something like wake on NIC ping, then your router may be inadvertantly turning on your system.

edit: Also, I found some interesting anecdotes about group loops interfering with network connections too.

I can play BUZZ just fine on my ps3, just cant try to click through the intro.

I like how the XMB slows down significantly when the news ticker scrolls text.

edit When you go to Network --> Information Board --> topic, is there any way to scroll the text faster?
