Wow @ the RT rating. I think The Lone Ranger won't be as big a bomb as Pacific Rim.

People keep saying this, but there's a much bigger market -- both domestically and internationally -- for giant robots than there is for a western based off a comic strip and TV show that everyone knows, but few have ever seen.

But there's an even bigger market for Johnny Depp and the Pirates brand.

Eh, Johnny Depp really hasn't done anything remarkable -- box office wise -- outside of the Pirates films and Alice. And Pirates are much more marketable than westerns, for whatever reason.

I saw this last night. Oh man....First of all it is WAY WAY too long. I couldn't tell if it wanted to be a comedy or action adventure but didn't really hit on either IMO. It was just OK for me. I would have been very disappointed if I would have spent money to see it. It has a few funny moments but not that good. Wait for Redbox. My girlfriend liked it as being entertaining but she had pretty low expectations for it.

I also never saw the TV show so maybe that could be why I didn't like it.

It was a different time, I saw the Filmation cartoon as a kid and it was interesting but not my favorite, heck even Bravestarr was better for me. The intros of the show are pretty cool honestly.

BTW is the William Tell overture in the movie?

But the Western genre is typically one that underperforms at the box office. Especially if it happens to be compounded with another genre (see: Cowboy vs. Aliens, Wild Wild West, and Jonah Hex). Neo-westerns seem to fare better. This would include True Grit, Django Unchained, and No Country for Old Men. Even the most successful films of this ilk carry budgets that don't wander into the blockbuster range.

The Lone Ranger reportedly has a budget of $250 million. This doesn't include the marketing budget, which could be anywhere from $100 to $150 million and upwards. It's going to need to gross quite a bit to make a profit.

Admittedly, prior to the Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, the swashbuckling genre was seen as barren. Disney is hoping to shift the paradigm once again. The distributor's track record is fairly solid. Alice in Wonderland, Iron Man 3, The Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides all grossed over $1 billion worldwide. John Carter was their last underperforming venture.

I'm curious to see how this is going to perform. Will it break a billion and launch a new franchise? If not, I'm sure Disney already has another blockbuster in the development pipeline. And they've got Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Tomorrowland, and a slew of other films to pick up the slack next year if The Lone Ranger underperforms.

Yeah
but not until the end of the movie

If this is anything like the 4th Pirates movie, count me out. That literally put me to sleep several times. On Stranger Tides has to be one of the most boring "blockbusters" I've ever seen.

I was hoping The Lone Ranger would fare better

I'm actually curious to know if the soundtrack is any fun. I'm not a big fan of Zimmer but sometimes he goes all out with the tongue-in-cheek action themes and delivers something really entertaining, like Sherlock Holmes.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think this movie is going to be a Pirates/Alice-type success. I don't think it'll be a John Carter bomba either, but it's not going to do as well as Disney wants it to.

I'm just saying, from the studio's perspective, I can see how and why they're so banking so much on this movie even though westerns aren't popular overseas. Depp + Pirates is a billion dollar brand, as long as they advertise the shit out of those two (hell, they didn't even use the words "Pirates of the Caribbean" in the trailer, just used the damn logo itself :lol) that's enough to carry it from their viewpoint.

The last good movie Johnny Depp made was BLOW. I just read thru his recent filmography on IMDB and the guy makes a TON of garbage. I didn't care for Pirates at all either.

Rotten Tomatoes score is now at 25% with a 4.7/10 average after 97 reviews. This is Depp's worst reviewed film since the Tourist. Tied for his worst reviewed film ever on Metacritic.

I hope the film tanks. Disney needs to learn a lesson when it comes to budgeting their films. They can't ride the coattails of Marvel, Pixar, and Pirates forever.

It certainly looks like it could be one of the bombs of the year if its as bad as it seems. Overly long and boring certainly don't do well for a summer adventure flick. They should have kept the supernatural element in there too IMO.

That's why they bought Star Wars. Instant box office bonanzas.

5 god damn Star Wars movies in 5 years

For marvel Im only watching the films now if the director interests me so I'm skipping Thor 2 and captain America 2

Probably gonna have to do the same for Star Wars if the first one sucks

Rango was excellent, but yeah, Depp sadly doesn't take the interesting sorts of projects he used to over a decade ago. I'd love to see him team up with Jim Jarmusch again. I adored Dead Man.

Better photographed indeed

Movie could have been good if they took out a whole hour (!!) from it. Gore verbinski needs to work with better writers. Because his directing is on point for blockbusters which is lacking from mostly everyone else these days.

So you're saying this will be nominated for a Golden Globe?

Re: overly long blockbusters

Is it or me did Hollywood swing in the complete opposite direction over run times in a very short period? I could have sworn just a few years ago people were complaining about studios insisting on 90 minute and sub-2 hour lengths for blockbusters to guarantee more show times. But now they've gone totally the other way, and it seems like most summer movies are being padded to run at well over 2 hours.

And of course, very few of these movies actually justify a 2.5+ runtime.

I was just gonna say, this is gonna be 2013's John Carter. Good thing Disney had Avengers and IM3 to offset some of the damage. Better start thinking about wiser projects in the future...although with Star Wars in the pipeline they could shit out Lone Ranger 2 and still be on cloud nine.

Overall, analysts seem rather mixed on the long shot of the Western.

Managing director of Janney Montgomery Scott, Tony Wible predicts the Mouse House will see $180 million in domestic earnings for the film and go on to see another $370 million from foreign box office, video game, and other sales. That would be enough for Disney to turn a profit.

What? I know international numbers are great for blockbusters but there's no way this makes $370mil in foreign markets.

The thing that saddens me about Depp is that I truly believe he's one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, at least of his generation. But he seems content with doing gay pirate routines, Hunter S. Thompson impressions, and waaaaaacky Tim Burton caricatures for the rest of his life.

But if they were paying me $20 million dollars a film when all I have to do is show up and do BIG BUGGED EYES, hell I might sell out, too.

I hope not. I want Depp to do something worthwhile. He's obviously in for the paycheck, but I hope his talent is utilized in the future with a decent script.

funny enough some of the shots in here reminded me of john carter. anyways it's the best looking blockbuster of the summer by far. but also the most glaring and obvious example of how they are getting bloated and over-long.

this would have been a really fun adventure film if it clocked in at 90-100ish minutes.

yeah. i hate that he's squandering his talent, but really if i was offered 20 million for drinking rum and chilling in the caribbean i would sell out too. hopefully transcendence is good.

i think matthew mcconaghey has had the best career turnaround in hollywood for me at the moment

Agreed. Gotta be one of the most overrated actors in existence. His filmography consists of so much shit and it's been at least a decade since he's been in anything I really liked.
