I just saw it. Wasn't bad at all - quite the entertainment in my opinion!

Tuesday night numbers, actually. Early tracking is suggesting Despicable Me 2 will make $35M for Wednesday and top $100M for the holiday weekend, while Lone Ranger is looking like $15M and at best $60M for the 5-day frame.

If Despicable Me 2 does anywhere near $35M today, it's going to do a lot more than $100M for the 5-day holiday weekend. Probably closer to $150M for the 5-day opening.

I saw this last night....and while is does have it's issues (being bloated, a tad overlong, and a slow-moving narrative), it was an entertaining escapist affair for a Summer flick.

Sure it does have an imbalance on overall tone (shifting between serious and comedy theatrics), but wasn't the first Pirates of the Caribbean like this anyway? Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer's chemistry may not be the best ever, but they do play off each other and do provide laughs. Depp's does his usual schtick as Tonto, and though he comes off more like a downplayed and less-sillier version of Jack Sparrow, he still delivers the humor (especially with the horse Silver).

I did find the film kind of violent (through shootings, stabbings, scalpings.....whether directly shown, implied, or less-focused in the background) especially for families that may bring their younger ones to see this.

Also of note was the last 20-minute action spectacle finale
aboard and atop dueling trains while the classic Lone Ranger theme, the "William Tell Overture" played in the background was very creative and worth the price of admission alone! And it was funny rounding out the ending with the classic line, "Hi-ho, Silver, away!" with humorous twist!

Overall, another serviceable and amusing affair from the Depp/Verbinski combo. Enjoy it as a Summer romp through the Wild West!

Fucking loved this movie.

Tonto was great. They did a good job. The humor goes from bugs bunny style 'whats up doc?' to really self aware more ironic humor, and it's lodged in weird places that make you cough up a single loud laugh after a brutal murder scene.

And I prefer Tonto's story to anything. Plus that final ending scene was really deep and kind of sad.

Do you think this film has transcended Ruth Wilson to superstardom?

The thing that saddens me about Depp is that I truly believe he's one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, at least of his generation. But he seems content with doing gay pirate routines, Hunter S. Thompson impressions, and waaaaaacky Tim Burton caricatures for the rest of his life.

But if they were paying me $20 million dollars a film when all I have to do is show up and do BIG BUGGED EYES, hell I might sell out, too.

I'm sure he has enough money at this point that 20 millions more or less wouldn't change shit.
On the other hand he should have some passion for acting left, enough to push him to choose decent roles.

So its basically on the level of Verbinski's Pirates movies? ie. bloated, nonsensical plot that runs on 45 minutes too long but is immensely entertaining theatrically due to the setpieces and comedy?

Hire back your 2d artists Disney. At least those movies look pretty. This movie was dull the entire way through.

Unfortunately they don't let her do enough. She gets her spunky action girl moments, but she's too much of a "long suffering frontier wife" for it to seem natural. She's the prize, the 'one who must be protected'. I don't think they really let her shine, or they tried to meld to different characters together into one and it didn't work.

They did sneak in a foot fetish shot, so if that's any indication, I think she'll be around for a while.

Totally. Except that it's not really nonsensical. The plot is pretty straightforward actually.

The movie is maybe 20-30 minutes too long with a great opening, and fantastic ending action sequence. Hammer is perfectly cast. He's both kind of a square doof and a badass at the same time. For all the shit Depp gets for overacting, he totally underplays Tonto. It's a pretty interesting characterization.

I would say if you were able to enjoy the Pirates movies despite their flaws, Lone Ranger will probably entertain you.

Indeed

Just got back with my son and we both dug the shit out of it
Biggest gripes being it is way too long and honesty only has
2
action scenes

Writing was solid and it at least looked like some of the budget was on screen.... still.... $250 lol

Just saw this movie tonight with the family.

Thought it was alright, not 2/10 bad but not the greatest movie ever either. My biggest complaint is that it is very disjointed but I really liked the
the end train part.

Very long film too, I was shocked that it was 2 hours and 40 minutes long.

Still looking forward to this. I somehow managed to enjoy Cowboys and Aliens so I'm sure I'll find something I like here.

Sort of yeah

It most certainly better than the last two Pirates films though

The press also shitted on Prince is Persia and the sorcerors apprentice I enjoyed both

Thanks for the great review guys I was excited for this! Pirates with Indians!

As long as it's not like John carter :0

What is up with the press just shitting all over this movie? And reviewers too. If gaffers are to be believed it's not THAT bad, but sites like Yahoo have been featuring several stories all week suggesting how bad it is and how likely it is to fail. Normally I wouldn't bat an eye, but I've read one too many at this point and it's starting to get suspicious.

GAF is a pretty nice group of fans, they have differences but share things in common. For example a lot of people here love movies like Speed Racer, I tried to show that movie to my family and they almost riot after 15 minutes, GAF is quite different to the regular movie goer.

I bet that this and John Carter are gonna spook Disney away from making big, high-budget action movies without superheroes in them for a long time.

What the hell has this to do with 2D animation? It's CG animation thats replacing that, not this. Disney have always been making live-action movies in addition to their animation projects.

Just couldn't resist letting your opinions on this be known in an unrelated thread, eh?

‘Lone Ranger’ Opens To Disastrous $9.7M, ‘Despicable Me 2′ Destroys For Huge $34.3M

Ouch. John Carter bomba part 2. Good thing Disney has Iron Man 3 and Monsters University.

This isn't quite a puzzling choice of film to green light compared to a financial crater like Battleship but why Disney thought spending nearly $300m on a new version of The Lone Ranger (even with Depp starring) is beyond me.

This sort of reception was to be expected given the near silent treatment the film was getting on 'social media' etc. If anyone wonders what Disney is going to do with all those Iron Man 3 profits evidently they are going to be using them to wipe up all that red ink from the Lone Ranger.

:P

Fixed.

Given that Star Wars etc is something of a no brainer given the merchandise etc whatever did happen to that 20k Leagues Under The Sea movie that Fincher was supposed to be doing?

It's still in the works. They announced that they were going to do some shooting around Georgia not too long ago.

Saw this tonight and thought it was pretty great. Everything else besides Before Midnight and Monsters U has disappointed me this summer, so it was nice to have my expectations exceeded.

Had I not been aware of the reviews, I would've expected a 70-80 on RT. It's being misunderstood by critics, and I'm hoping there will be a big divide between them and audiences. For what it's worth, I loved the first two Pirates movies, thought three was ambitious but way too bloated and unfocused, and hated four.

The review from rogerebert.com pretty much nails my own expereience: http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-lone-ranger-2013

Whitewashing the role of Tonto sure helped with your movie's marketability Disney.

Certainly.

Making (at least from what I've read/heard) the protagonist not the main focus didn't help either. The whole thing sounds like such a convoluted mess.

Hopefully Disney realize (they won't) Depp and pretty settings and explosions can't carry a movie (most of the times at least). Spending so much on a crappy project seems like such a waste.

I think shooting Australia was the last I heard. At that point the studio were 'wooing' Channing Tatum to star after Brad Pitt may or may not have passed IIRC.

And films like this only spend so long 'in the works' before they stall and are towed back into development hell.

Seems to me that those Long Ranger numbers and the darker tone of Fincher's films may have beached this project. If it does get the green light we should hear about it before Xmas. if not it's almost certainly dead.

Johnny Depp not being a definite hit and therefore not receiving tens of millions of dollars just to rock up on set and act quirky is also never a bad thing.

Have you guys seen the film?

I knew this looked bad. If I had to see that trailer one more time before every movie I saw this summer I was going to scream.

Well they are releasing a new Star Wars film every single year starting in 2015. That isn't a super hero franchise.

I think the reviews killed this movie. It was tracking very strongly til the reviews hit.

And the reviews were mostly bullshit. They admit that the movie is entertaining, just too long, or too violent, or both. How this movie is deemed too violent is beyond me. It's very cartoonish and not graphic in the least. Bare in mind that the last two hit westerns were True Grit and Django Unchained, and this is not even remotely close to True Grit's level of violence.
