Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

Cpu is a FX - 6100, gpu is RX 480. Had to tune some settings to medium to get a stable 30fps. The 60fps option wasn't as smooth. Game looks great at 1080p and very worth the $51 Canadian. Kind of wondering if I should have paid extra for the ultimate or deluxe edition?

Your CPU is probably too weak for 60fps. Deluxe/Ultimate comes with VIP (double wheelspin credits) and car pass, not entirely worth it imo, the base game has enough content and gives you enough credits to do everything.

I'm really wondering what combination of hardware and software they were using to get it running at 4k60 at E3...

It was 4K30 at E3.

The CPU is defintely a bottleneck for me right now. I'm going to wait a bit before upgrading.

feel like I lost more frames since I came back after a few weeks, but I could blame just about anything due to the game sucking my 2500K dry. Getting a 6700K and 3200 MHz RAM build soon and I'll actually be able to run obs with the game for once

Also, I had an issue if my game crashed my fps would go to complete shit in only this game if I relaunched the game without restarting the entire computer

Is there any info if there will be future performance patches? I tried to google it but didn't find anything.

maybe they just put in new addons and cars and stop working on performance patches?

I haven't heard them say anything about performance since the game launched.

They're barely any better than Hello Games when it comes to communication.

Yup, they're really bad. I contacted them again today regarding general performance and to see if they'll finally acknowledge input lag problems at 30fps.

My game was working okay last Friday but yesterday I couldn't get it to run above 5fps and the sound was having serious issues too. Greaaaaaaaat job everyone.

Hello...so I upgraded from an 480 to a 1070, and despite it being better in almost every benchmark and game I can throw at it, for some reason it is actually worse than the 480 for Horizon 3!

I'm sure I must have something wrong...at ultra settings at 1080p I'm getting frame rates around 30-60 but rarely over 50.

On the 480 I was getting mostly 50-60 with some dips below.

Admittedly my processor is an i5 3570k with default clocks, but surely the 1070 should still be beating the 480?

Yeah that is odd. Outside of Paradise City I'm usually at 80fps or above running on a 1070.

The input lag on my system is no worse than your typical 30fps console game. I notice the lag as the game is 30fps but the way some people go on I have to wonder. 60fps will automatically improve it.

FH3 PC 30fps and Xbox 360 game Enslaved 30fps

Before we go into it here's FH2 on Xbox One
zygc.jpg

FH2 on Xbox One test has more lag than most 30fps games which are around 100ms.. The display in question is a BenQ 10ms around the lowest you can buy so remove 10ms. For those not up to speed you're left with game lag. Many on GAF think display lag is the only lag and somehow the game is instantaneous, no, games have usually 85-150ms of lag and you can get this down to 40-60 on PC without vync and high frame rate. Please don't quote saying I have game mode on and you would feel such lag. it exists, deal with it. Please go to displaylag.com if you want to understand more.

I don't have an XBO to test FH3.

if you want to see some lag see this gif.

We've had people trying to refute this saying there's no lag on Xbox One by posting up videos on youtube last year which funnily enough showed excessive lag.

I'd welcome others to test. I don't have a high speed camera and I'm wondering how variable it is on Windows PC with all the W10 issues and quirks with UWP and what people have enabled on their OS. The claims seem outlandish. If its worse then it must be between 10-50ms.

I tested Forza 4 which is 60fps and its roughly half the lag of Xbox 360 Enslaved or FH3 30fps PC which you'd expect. FH3 PC plays like a 30fps game, not great but I can make the turns and play through it with ease.

Loaded up FH3 for the first time in six weeks or so over the weekend. I was disappointed to see that I still can't sustain 60fps 100% of the time on my 1060/4790k, even on the medium preset. Races with more than a couple of NPC cars drop me to ~50-55 every time. This has been quite a year for PC games that aren't scaled properly to handle a constant 60 on powerful hardware.

Ok, the performance in this game has some sort of broken issue to it that is completely separate from optimization.

I tried out the idea from a few posts above of turning the textures to LOW and leaving everything else on high. When I first loaded it I had perfect silk smooth 60fps for about an hour racing in the Yucca Valley area even on full 12 car races. Was fantastic and I thought "hey, so it was the textures all along that are bringing performance way down"

Then I got a showcase in the city surfers paradise and had to go there and it was the usual choppy 40-50fps that surfers paradise gets. Ok, fine.

But then even when I left surfers paradise it remained choppy no matter where I went. Even if I was racing alone in a totally empty field it'd stay 40-50fps and stutter non-stop. I went back to the same Yucca valley races where I was getting smooth 60fps an hour ago and now it was stuttering non-stop and completely choppy mess.

It almost seems like once the framerate starts getting stutter, something breaks and it can't go away until you quit the game. And surfers paradise or even byron bay in the little town (aka, wherever there are multiple buildings) seems to be what breaks the game and causes never ending stutter.

I'm basically just going to try to stay away from surfers paradise as much as I can. I'm at around 7 million fans in the campaign now, so pretty far in, but will generally try to focus in the other 3 areas because when the game is running perfect at locked 60fps no drops at all, it's excellent. But when it's a stutter mess it's just barely bearable and half annoying/half fun.

The performance is erratic AF and always has been. Unless I lock it to 30 it genuinely feels like I get different performance every day if I try for 60fps.

For me it's not the performance that's the issue (for me personally), it's the crashes. The game is usually good about saving (for the most part...), but the crashes are not cool. Now that I'm playing the game a lot more, it's a daily occurrence now.

I went about a week where it would crash every 10 minutes. Pretty sure I fixed it by turning the rear view mirror quality to medium.

Sigh, seeing this thread on the top page again I was hoping that the bad/uneven performance problems were mostly gone, but I guess I still shouldn't expect a smooth framerate on my i7 970 PC. I don't mind 30 FPS, but the game still sounds like a mess performance wise.

I had frequent crashes too when I had my i5 2500k and was underperforming. But once I upgraded to the i76700k the crashes were gone. Did not have a single crash since I upgraded. And I played alot since then. Crashes and bad performance seem to be directly correlated.

On my i7 4790k I had a single day where I was having crashes. Had 3 crashes in one night's session where I was having rough performance and locking the game at 30fps with high graphics. All the other days I've had zero crashes with lower settings and 60fps/w stutter. Something in the high/ultra makes it more likely to crash I think.

Locking the game @ 33fps via the in-game setting is causing the game to crash for me.

And I can't record with Shadowplay any longer for some reason.

Since I got my 1070 I honestly can't tell the difference between 45fps and 60. On the 480 any drop below 60 caused very noticable stuttering or tearing.

Am I going mental or is there some Nvidia setting I'm missing? Similar results with vsync on or off.

Maybe lower frametime on the 1070?

Uhh...just pretend for a second that I'm an idiot with apparently poor Google skills...how would I go about that?

He meant that the frametime on average is more consistent. When the frames are paced evenly at 60/50/40fps, it'll feel better than frames that occur erratically in that same second. That could be due to the nvidia architecture and the game you play. Some scenarios may favour AMD over nvidia.

Ahh, gotcha. Nice explanation, thank you.

Maybe that's it. Seems odd not to see any tearing at 40-60fps though.

From all the reports, I reckon people with DDR3 are getting better perf than those with DDR4. Latency related maybe?
Getting 60 FPS with maybe one or two unnoticeable drops to 58 on surfer's paradise beach road on a 6700K@4.2ish/cheap 970/3200 MHz DDR4 RAM at high dynamic settings/no motion blur/60FPS cap. Perhaps RAM that isn't quick enough to send x data in y time compared to the xbox one could be to blame? test footage sample, some fps lost due to recording

Played for about 3-4 hours straight and had really good performance tonight. First 2-3 hours was perfect 60 fps outside the city and even 60 fps on the outskirts of the city. Only the main skyscraper district knocked it down to 50fps. I even got 60fps on some of those spots when driving solo.

Around hour 3 the game started getting choppy. Not terrible but it would be 60fps with minor stutter every couple of seconds. As time went along the stutter got worse and worse and eventually I quit out.

This is with every setting on high + 4x MSAA except textures on LOW at 1080p/60fps 980GTX. Really does seem like it's good performance for a while but stuff builds up over time and causes issues.

Yeah, I have no idea what they updated, but I played for 6 hours straight tonight and had 60fps everywhere, even in Surfer's Paradise. Occasionally I'd get drops or stutter, but for the most part even with 12 car races I'd get 60fps everywhere. Looked fantastic and was a ton of fun to play when it's fluid like that which is why I played so long. Something definitely changed in the last day or two since a patch. Game runs much better than a week ago when I picked it up during the BF sale.

What's your FPS in Rainforest Escape race? That's the benchmark. If you get 60FPS in that race then I'll believe that maybe performance improved, otherwise you are just having a placebo moment like happened to so many people here.

Is this still with low textures?

E: gave Rainforest Escape a shot with unlocked fps at 1440p, got small drops to 58 fps at the beginning, after that 70+. Went to Surfer's afterwards and I still get low to high 50s at the tram station between the skyscrapers, except if I turn shadows off.

That's with a 6600K (stock, but I really should get around to OCing), 16Gb DDR4-3000, GTX 1080 and an SSD (game loads VERY slowly for some reason though).

NVCP settings: Shader cache off, Trilinear optimization on, Max prerendered frames 1, High Performance Texture Filtering, Prefer Max Performance.

Game settings: started from High preset, turned Motion Blur off, Shadows, Dynamic & Static Geometry to Medium.

Just tested it. The Street Race Rainforest Escape at night in the rain, locked 60fps other than a drop in the first second when all the cars take off. Didn't even go down to 59fps or stutter once the entire race after that and this is with the FPS counter on.

I'm telling you, the counter is staying stable at 60fps for the past 2 days or so for 90% of the areas. Whereas before that it would always be moving between 58-60fps with stutters and then down to 45-55 fps in the city.

This is with textures set to Low and everything else on High and 4x MSAA/1080p/60fps.

The only other thing I could think of is maybe in the latest patch they added in SLI support? I've been running GTX 980 x 2 SLI the whole time but since the game didn't support SLI it's not like I'd been getting any extra performance from the 2nd card.

Yeah, the very center of Surfer's Paradise with the tram station is still where the framerate is hit the hardest, but it seems like outside that the game is now holding 60fps elsewhere which is a huge improvement from <60fps almost everywhere.

Wow what did this patch do? Trying to show this off to a friend wanted to have him see this and the patch absolutely destroyed my performance. The game tried to"optimize" after the patch and now the frame rate literally stutters into the single digits. From 60fps locked to this piece of shit.

It's incredible how there is absolutely no consensus whatsoever to how this runs after every patch. Every time there's a few that claim it runs way better and others that claim it's much worse.

Amazing.

Moved my installation to an SSD I bought during Black Friday and now the game crashes to desktop while loading up my save. Ran perfect for me before and now I don't even get an error message, just an immediate closure to desktop after hitting continue. Wonderful...

Not only that, but people can have their performance slashed/improved completely out of the blue.

They don't seem to be applying the patches to the demo, which is annoying. I wanted to re-buy when performance got better.

When you say moved what do you mean exactly? I don't think the Win Store supports drag and dropped files like Steam does, as an example.

Yeah. The demo runs like absolute horse shit on my system (2600k@4,2), regardless of the settings which is even funnier. 60fps are completely off the table. No way for me to judge for myself whether the full game will run at acceptable levels or not.

What the hell is this game even doing
