Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

So uh, how's this running on roughly scorpio equivalent systems? I know it's a dumb question but I just can't help myself

Patch sounds awesome! Not sure it'll help much with my ancient Phenom 965 (could never get above 40 fps before) but maybe it'll be a bit better. Planning on getting a Ryzen 5 soon.

Man you guys weren't kidding, it runs at a locked 60FPS for me now, I had 1 or 2 small dips to 56-57 in the big city (Surfer's Paradise?) but everything else has been a locked 60 on Ultra settings at 1080p on a i5-2500K/1070.

Yep, this patch is amazing. Other than a slight drop on the initial load, everything has been a solid 60fps. Even in the city, with ultra settings and dynamic optimization off.

Well, seeing how there is no PC hardware that is on the same level (referring to the directx on the gpu), we can't tell ya ;)

Man, this patch has me excited. Just did 2 city races at 4K@60fps (well, 4x DSR). Damn, it looks so good and no hitching or stuttering.

Any impressions from people with 120/144hz monitors? Can we hit a stable 72FPS or more with the new update?

I don't have either monitor, but at 1080p@60fps with vsync off, I'm hitting between 80-100fps.

Same exact thing for me. I drove around Surfers Paradise where it would go from 60fps to drops around 45 or so through out that area prior to the patch and with this new patch out of 20 min of driving around at high speed through the same are I had 2 drops to 57 for like a split second. In the Hot Wheels expansion area after about 40 min of play or so had 2 or 3 slight drops to 57 for a second as well. Patch has definitely improved for me BIG TIME. Before I could never go near Surfers Paradise without getting immediate drops and in certain races I would get some to the 50's, right now it is pretty much rock solid 60fps with the extremely rare drop to 57 and only in SP and a few sections of the hot wheels area.

This is running at the maximum settings, everything set to the highest setting and at 4k and it is bliss. As mentioned prior to the patch, outside of certain areas it was solid but had a few little hiccups etc., but they really fixed the game after all this time.

Bravo Playground....and the Hot Wheels expansion is something else, simply incredible.

Good lord this game is gorgeous in 4k. I'm finally able to play in 4k with everything maxed at mostly 60 fps (there are occasional dips, but they're small). I'm using 4x MSAA instead of 8x, but it still looks remarkable.

Wow it's finally playable, been waiting since it came out. Lost all hope it would ever get fixed will redownload tonight and test it on my 1080 and 6800k.

For anyone who has the patch installed, is the hitching gone with frame rate smoothing turned off? Or does it still need to be turned on?

Ah lol. the 580 seems like a real good card for the money, Forza games perform better with AMD cards too.
Yeah, it's very tempting to pick a card for Forza. But I want to wait till Vega has been announced and released now that we're so close. To see what it delivers and how it effects the pricing of the currently available GPUs.

Those of you playing at 1440p with a 6700K, 1080 and 16Gb ram, what settings are you using? I'm still getting a tiny bit of stutter with everything maxed out.

Everyone around me is getting performance increases, and here I am nearly giving up trying to reinstall this game because of Windows Store.

This program is so bad it's unbelievable. Been stuck at 2.04 GB for nearly half an hour on a 100+ Mbps connection.

i dont think any cpu has 4x the single core IPC of jaguar. but no, no cpu can come close to sustaining 120

Weird. You would think that would be the case these days.

I find that very strange that that may seemingly be the case, as you have lots of other CPU limited 30hz titles on consoles which can be pushed to 120hz and beyond on modern CPUs as DF or others have showcased - Alien Isolation, The Witcher 3 (a game which scales greatly with core count and memory speed), Assassins Creed, etc.

IMO, any DX12 game from an MS first party dev should have 0 stutters and 0 CPU related problems - as DX12 came into existence to eliminate stutters and CPU related problems in the first place. Heck DX12 is the place where you have nigh complete control over the ability of those areas where stutters come from - it is the dev's fault, not the (PC) hardware.

Can confirm, this may be one of the best performance patches I've ever seen. I don't know what sorcery they've cast, but it like a whole new game for me.

1080ti, 6800k at stock, 16gb - I'm getting over 100fps at 1440p for the most part, maxed out.

I thought I'd give them another chance and get the Hot Wheels/Blizzard Mountain combo pack. The Hot Wheels DLC is absolutely insane. I'm really looking forward to getting back into the game.

If this was a stuttery, laggy mess for you before, you really should give it another shot. The game is absolutely brilliant, and now, it is what it was always meant to be.

Same thing for me last night, I uninstalled the game to try a sort the issue, it didn't. Then suddenly it just started working, or rather, it was saying I was downloading at 150mb per second and my download started flying way up. So it looks as if it is downloading the whole time just the progress bar is borked. Completely pathetic I know, but just leave you computer on and hopefully it will install.

It was like this for me too initially. Just kept flashing mapping download and ticking up in tiny increments. I left it on and eventually it ramped up to max out my 70mbit connection.

Ditto, really quite pathetic how they can't get this right. Took me 20 minutes to update the windows camera app, I have a 200mbit connection........

I'm having the issue of the game simply not wanting to launch anymore. The forza horizon splash screen appears for a split second and then closes again. The things I've tried:

Redownload the game
Disabled microphone for windows apps
Changed the time to 2 am (which for some people weirdly worked)
Reset the application in the app menu.
Disabled windows defender
removed my video drivers and fresh installing them
making sure windows was up to date
Reinstalled the realtek audio drivers
disabled Hyperthreading

I'm at a total loss what to do ):

Ancedotal but do you have any hardware monitoring applications open? I used to have this issue for a long time until I closed the Aida64 utility.

look at the cpu performance of something like battlefield 1 even under dx11 where its supposedly umpossible to get proper multithreading. just keeps scaling as you increase core count and stuttering/frame pacing issues are almost nonexistent

Took me five seconds to update the camera app... Really weird that people are having these problems.

Most of the time my apps just update in the background, rarely do I even open the store. It's seems quite temperamental though. My friends have had similar issues downloading Gears of War updates, some sail straight though, some get stuck unable to update, go figure.

Rock steady 72fps with a very minor stutter here and there and fps drops in the transition between gameplay and videos.

1080p Medium settings with some stuff tuned up.

GTX1070, 16GB DDR3, disgustingly old (4 years already maybe?) 3570k@4.1.

Can confirm that my game runs at a smooth vsync 60fps, everywhere, only rarely dipping a bit in to the mid 50s, like at the beginning of races. Frame smoothing at 1. Way to go PG Games!

Graphics fully maxed out, 4790k, 16GB DDR3, Titan X 2015, at 1080p (I need a new monitor :P)

P.s. Have they altered the colour pallet of the game, it looks more "gamey"?

Yes I do still observe micro stutters then. 1080Ti 1440p gsync 100+ fps

I'm afraid it's a case of collective euphoria because it used to work extremely badly before the patch. However, after the first wave of euphoria, I have already read 10 users with high end pc who comment that the stuttering caused by the load of assets has not been solved.

I recorded this at 4k, with 2x msaa and ultra-settings. I never expected it to run at locked 60 fps to be honest. I was just curious and the results were surprising, at least to me. For gameplay, I settled at 3200x1800/ultra with 2x msaa (I'm on a 1440p screen) and I never noticed the fps counter dropping below 60. But I also wondered about CPU performance and downclocked my 7700k from 4.8GHz to 4.3GHz. Performance still stayed at 60 fps (1800p/ultra/2x msaa).
--> I was probably running into GPU bottlenecks at 4k and not into CPU ones.

Gameplay isn't 100% micro-stutter free, but it is a lot better then before. The stutter you see here is probably from me recording with Geforce Experience. Sadly, I have no external capture setup right now.

did you check gpu usage during that 4k run by any chance? if so was it always above 95%?

You could try creating a new user in windows. If you can't find FH3 in start menu, just search it on the store, it will take like 10 seconds to install again and play.

Tried it, but even there it closes on startup as well. I made sure to disable the microphone in pricacy settings there as well to be sure for a second.

I just watched this and saw some stutter... Then like I did way back when the game initially launched and people where posting videos I rewound the same section and watched it over and over again. Sometimes I'd see the stutter and sometimes I wouldn't.

From my own experience before I got a refund right after the game launched I wouldn't even call the faux youtube stutter or hitching what people are talking about when they say they are dealing with stuttering problems. The stuttering was pretty consistent no matter where you where or what you where doing. This didn't at all look the same. That looked MUCH smoother to me. However, I really don't think that YouTube is the best way to discern how smooth a game is playing unless there is a frametime graph on the screen or something.

I'm still getting intermittent stutter whenever in-game UI popups happen. No matter what settings I play with, it just keeps happening. This is with a 970, 16GB RAM and set to 1080/30. Does anyone else suffer from this? If I try and search for the issue all I come back with relates to the general menu stutters (which have since gone).

Note: 'Roads Driven/Discovery' popups are the worst offender, can often drop up to 5 frames.

Update: I dialled back the HUD elements in the settings, things like notifications and names above cars. That seems to have solved things, and I can even run a solid 30 at 1440 now!

Fiddled around with the wheel settings, seems a lot better now. I think I was being a harsh critic on the handling since the last time I used the wheel was on Gran Turismo 6, and the physics/handling are fairly different in comparison to FH3.

All and all, the game is running 70-80fps for me, and I haven't gotten a crash back to desktop after playing over 30 minutes, so that's a definite plus for me. Fairly excited I can clear this game over the Summer and work on the dlc later. Feels good to play a racing game with a wheel again!

Can I ask what wheel you're using and has the force feedback improved at all?

they are going to release an updated demo with the current code path within the next several weeks. ill be able to see first hand how much its improved. the current demo is bad

Are you a Windows Insider? The updates routinely break Forza Horizon.

Now I have the "Memory Error" after 10min of playing on a 480 with 8gb of video memory.
Was running 4k@30fps just fine before...

did you check gpu usage during that 4k run by any chance? if so was it always above 95%?

It's of course not always at >95%, but I'm also not playing with unlocked fps.
I repeated the test (same settings, resolution, race, just a different car and no recording)
GPU load (% GPU Auslastung in the Afterburner graph) is definitely high during complex scenes. I captured a moment when fps droped down to 55. As you can see; GPU load is maxed out and cpu load seems to be rather low (~55% total load). This is still on the down clocked 7700k (4.3ghz) btw.

4k/ultra/2x msaa said:

For comparison: Same scene from my video. FPS are even lower here, probably because of Geforce experience recording. GPU is running at the same oc and the 7700k is at 4.8GHz
