Just curious but out of the people who don't think the game feels "Japanese" enough, who has actually spent time in Japan?

I havent been yet, I just wanted it to be more like above, you know bustling and alive while also having cool japanese > turning into english letters for instance for the Horizon Festival itself etc

I've been multiple times including one time where we rented a car and travelled outside of the big cities into the countryside. I've also spent a night at Daikoku PA (the big car meet under the highways that you always see and is featured in that video) and took time to travel around and visit different tuning shops and locations (including Tatsumi PA, and the Akihabara underground that people do car meets in).

I think they did a pretty good job at recreating the atmosphere in the confines of an open world racer. Japan isn't as outlandish as many people think and even a place like Akihabara just looks like any other place in Tokyo if it wasn't plastered in generic anime (I say that as an anime fan) especially during the day.

I do agree that it feels "barren" especially in the city but the problem is if you want it to actually be like Tokyo you'd barely be able to drive through it at more then 30mph and they obviously can't have a ton of pedestrians that you can possibly hit.

It appears some people just want a caricature of Japan where everything is covered in sakura.

I think they made it because its literally a factory kinda game for them now.

Just the same shit, except swap in a different country.

Like the opening races instead of having a nighttime drift streetrace vibe, no Im launching myself off mountaintops again while F22 jets fly by with streaks of colors, wooptidoo not like Ive not seen that exact same sequence since Forza Horizon 3.

Man i remember on old GAF when people would post those DriveClub gifs all the time, and i often said it looked like the best looking game ever.
When my friend had to go away for work for 6 weeks, and he loaned me his PS4 with his games, DriveClub didnt have quite the same effect when seeing the game on the big screen lol.

If you play it on a 4k tv it looks pretty bad due to the image getting stretched plus the terrible AA games were using in 2014 that, consequently, looks just fine on a 1080p tv.

That's why I always say if only Sony wasn't a POS and patched this for 4k/60 like they should've done years ago. A game like this deserves to be honored. It's a graphical masterpiece really. Yeah, it uses a lot of little tricks to get there and a 4k tv exposes that, but a 4k update would solve all its problems. The devs knew what the fuck they were doing just like the Order 1886 devs who also made a visual masterpiece. 2014 and 2015 those games came out! Not joking Driveclub would beat EVERY modern racer in terms of pure visual splendor even today.

This is the only thing that bothers me on horizon games. That constant yapping, go here, go there, but other than that solid games.

I don't know about you guys, but I mute dialogues in some racing games. I've done that in several NfS and Crew games and the experience is instantly better. It's not like tell you important stuff, so you're not missing out.

Same way I always disable Anna (as strange as it sounds ;p).

End the day they had a winning formula, not as if the "competition" of which there wasn't really any, was giving the developers something to sweat about, so they probably thought we have a great base of a game already, and let's just tweak things here and there....
