As long as they keep school funds out of it there is nothing or no one to charge.

It's still an event presumably endorsed and coordinated by the school.

I don't really understand how it's not possible for private businesses to be able to segregate their shit, yet a fucking High School is capable of doing it for one of their premier events.

What do they say to the students? "students, remember to attend the prom this weekend, buy not you nigga lol"

are there not equality laws in usa?

Disgusting

The G/a/f thing changed to american states so as to reduce the obviousness of the answer being Florida. When you swap in the american states, you add an element of uncertainty when the story contains some of the more uniquely american cultural traits such as; rampant homophobia, racism, anti-intellectualism, overzealous gun advocacy, etc.

The school probably lets some outside group handle it thus absolving themselves of any discrimination lawsuits. I can't imagine there hasn't been talk of some kind of civil lawsuit at this point. The group hosting the party and the school have probably pounced on some loopholes.

Then G/A/F was misapplied. It's supposed to be for those stories that are not easily identifiable as any one place, and the only link between them being intense strangeness.

I've seen the documentary with Morgan Freeman. I got is:

Black people are more into rap, whites more into romantic prom

Makes sense to me to have 2 different proms but you should be able to have a choice which one to attend to...

White people love hip-hop!

I'm not sure about this partcular case, but in other cases, the prom or school function is held off school property, and run by parent committees who do all the fund raising. So there's no one to sue. It's a private party for students of the school.

No it doesn't. You figure out what people want at their prom and hold a prom for everyone. I didn't like the shit played at my prom but that's no reason to hold 2 separate ones. It's about socializing with your fellow classmates and your date (if you have one).

I said this on the first page.

It's sad that the school doesn't host an all-inclusive prom, but the outrage at some sort of institutionalized segregation that doesn't exist is odd.

Whoa that is fuuuucked up. I thought this was maybe a leftover April Fools thread that got put here accidentally. Jesus.

What. It's obvious this happens because a precedent has been set.

But then G/A/F would never be used! We had quite the string of florida solutions. It came to a point where even strangeness would alone would leave the most obvious choice.

What. It's obvious this happens because a precedent has been set.

The precedent that was set was integration happening in the 50's-60's, prompting the schools to stop hosting proms (out of a racist desire to not race-mix, I'm sure) which lead to an already segregated community taking it upon themselves to host prom. The fact that they've been doing it for ages, and these kids are taking it upon themselves to change that, is fantastic.

That being said, the only thing the school is even remotely at fault for is *not* re-hosting prom officially.

Eh I don't see the school condemning it though. I'm not saying they're legally at fault but it's deplorable.

The girls said if any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, that student would probably be escorted off the premises by police. That was the case last year when a biracial student was turned away by police.

@_@ I'm pretty sure there are a couple of laws against this.

Pretty sure...

... pretty sure

The article says the school holds the prom. It could be sloppy reporting but its not the readers fault for thinking the school is responsible.

Who do you think runs the schools? Who are the ones who have been successfully running this private prom for decades? If only it was as simple as having the school open it's own prom.

But why is it the schools responsibility to condemn it? Sure, *morally* they should take charge and host an integrated prom.

I really see the issue being the community/parents who willingly segregate their children for some bizarre reason. The story should be about them. The outrage should be directed at them.

Yeah this is the part where it's like wait, what.

The senior class is raising money to pay for the integrated prom, without the help of school officials. It will be held April 27.

The students said the school offered a resolution to permit an integrated prom for all students to attend, but not stop segregated proms.

I agree, and it's disappointing that a tiny but hugely relevant fact is left out.

here's an article that mentions it: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...segregation-integrated-prom-article-1.1307821

Wilcox County High School does not actually sponsor either dance, and the event relies on private donations, fundraising efforts and organization from parents and students. Because the event is privately funded and not held in the high school, organizers can choose who enters the dance.

I'm pretty sure the school doesn't have a say about whether or not the current segregated proms continue, as they are privately held events not associated with the school.

stutte, institutional segregation used to be a legal rule, now it's just a valued tradition. Practiced by people who really care about their families and the future of their children.

Which makes this even more sad, since it's not against the law to be integrated, yet people still prefer segregation...

I swear this is a troll or a hoax or something... I mean wow. Onion article? something??

Welcome to our world. :(

<Mississippi

It's the parents most of the time. They don't want their kids going to a event that's tied to grouping partners together in the way that prom and homecoming does. No chance of race mixing.

I grew up one county over from Wilcox and I can sadly say that this still takes place all over the southern part of the state. My home county high school was one of the first to integrate in the area and students and their parents still continue to boycott the school prom. They instead opt to hold private ones.

I was gonna make a joke but fuck it. Fuck that town and fuck everyone involved. What the hell is wrong with these people? Do their stores also deny service to interacial couples?

They have one for negroes but not for queers? Well I'll be damned.

I wonder if they run a DNA test before they let you in. You wouldn't want one of those sneaky people with 1-5% "black" DNA tarnishing the white purity of the prom.

hrm...well...it started with the people and not the law. You know the basics about segregation in the South, right? Free slaves and Southern Reconstruction and then taking revenge upon and suppressing the free blacks. Right?

So I guess anyone of color goes to the colored one?Or do they have one for Asians,Hispanisc,Arabs, etc.
I bet they have a color chart. So I guess black Latinos are screwed over, while passably white ones are okay.

The students should all go to the "colored-only" prom in protest.

Order of Myths is another great doc about cultural modern segregation in Alabama with regard to Mardi Gras. They have separate parades, king and queens etc. It's a fascinating look into a culture that sees what they do as a way to celebrate their culture. You see how the kids have a hard time squaring it. It's one of those things that's entirely cultural. The government has no say in the matter. Going to have to change from the inside.
