This. It was less to do with conscious rap in general (although it could include that) and more about the underground, non-commercial artists. The term came about because the fanbase was primarily male, and was characterized by folks wearing backpacks, often because they were carrying around notebooks and pens to write raps, blunts and weed, etc etc.
Lots of boots, military apparel, cargo pants, etc etc. Think white college kids doing dorm freestyle sessions about the elements and keepin' shit real, wavin' their rap hands. I don't ever remember it being a publication or groupie thing, just a term that kinda came about organically to describe that particular sub-genre and it's fans.

As for the significant others liking or disliking rap...my wife straight up listened to hipster music with a little bit of pop sprinkled in here and there.
Then I forced her to listen to rap on our long drives and she has gotten around to a lot of it. She loves most of Kendrick's album, strangely enjoyed ASAP Rocky, and hates hates hates lil Wayne. Not bad overall.
Nah, it's more like "you can stay in the bunker, but there will probably be only the shitty parts of it left".

When we have a definite collection of beats for this gaf tape, can someone put them all in one place to make it easier to access? I have one of peter's and two of aces, I'd like to hear as many as I can and try my hand at writing as much as possible for them.
