PPS: The lack of Super Metroid on people's list is disturbing... it's the only game in my mind I'd ever feel comfortable giving a perfect score to...

Geez, this is difficult. Should be a top 25, doing a top 10 is just an exercise in using one game to represent others. I could only narrow down to 20, by cutting out a bunch of games in my favorite series.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee
3. Doom
4. Metroid Prime
5. Resident Evil 4
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

8: Final Fantasy X
9: Shadow of the Colossus
10: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Such a difference from last year, gaming's changed huh?

Final Fantasy VII

This is it, the one and only. The difference between #2 and #1 is ridiculous. FFVII will probably stay on this spot until the remake gets released or something.

The best moment of FFVII:
Epic, that's all
QTTbz.jpg

Seiken Densetsu 3

By far the best action RPG out there. It's got gorgeous graphics, perfect control scheme, a beautiful soundtrack and a deep and evolved story with multiple paths to dig into.

The best moment of SD3:
The first time 2D graphics really, REALLY blew my mind
IBJPu.png

Metal Gear Solid 4

So this generation pops in and says hello with a huge bang. I was expecting an okay gameplay experience with the story of my life. I got the best controlled third person action game of all time, with such high quality cutscenes (with interaction!) that it blew my mind several times during the playthrough. As a huge MGS2 fan, this game was nothing but pure sex.

The best moment of MGS4:
The only time in gaming I've been pounding the square button as much as this scene
K38yK.jpg

Legend of Mir

No one's heard of it so no need to blab about it for too long. It's far from a good MMORPG now since no one's playing it anymore but back when shit was hype, this was the game that I could play for 8 hours a day for 5 years. The community was great and so was the PvP sections of it. It remains the best MMORPG for me, even at its current state.

The best moment of LoM:
Any wedding I've been in
WUqUK.jpg

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike

The best fighter of all time. The countless and countless of hours just trying to get a red parry out of Chun SA2 is a reason to get this spot on my list. But 3s is more than that, it has everything you need in a fighting game. Including the, hands down, best soundtrack of all fighters. Jazz baby!

The best moment of 3s:
Anytime my low forward connects
LqyJ9.jpg

Demon's Souls

Oh look, this generation decides to say hello again! Except, this time it's here to say "Fuck off". Difficulty was perfect and here's hoping Project Dark will give in to the scrubs. The way they implemented online was ridiculous. The gameplay was flawless and it punished those who deserved to be punished. An instant classic and it's definitely here to stay.

The best moment of DS:
I've never been so scared in my entire life
O5vFJ.jpg

Diablo 2

World of Warcraft... Starcraft II... Blizzard games are great but only one could fit my list. Diablo 2 really deserves this spot. This game made loot important. It made duels important. It made insulting others important. When I picked it up, I knew I'd be playing it for 2-3 years. But did I know I'd still be trading SoJs for Enigmas in the year 2011?

The best moment of D2:
Enigma.
ECPlD.jpg

Final Fantasy X

The first PS2 game on the list and boy does this deserve its spot. Nobou Uematsus best soundtrack of all time and still one of the prettiest games of all time. When it was first released, it looked like a tech demo straight from PC. Combat added something completely different and the sphere grid was addicting and rewarding. Every setting in the game was memorable either because of its graphics, lore, music, pacing, content or a combination of everything (Calm Lands).

The best moment of FFX:
The cutscene just before fighting Yunalesca where Auron goes batshit insane
gxewY.jpg

Shadow of the Colossus

I wasn't a fan of ICO. Because of this, I was very skeptical when I bought Uedas next piece of art. Boy am I glad I didn't skip this one as SotC is one of the few games that actually oozes with so much atmosphere you could almost feel the tense fog through the cover of the game. One of a kind is a perfect way of describing this game. Nothing can ruin the HD version.

The best moment of SotC:
Colossi #3 was always my favorite
kuULN.jpg

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Last but definitely not least, the perfect 2D action game. I'm not a Castlevania fan so this took me by surprise. The amount of content in this game is ridiculous (206.2%?), and the controls are just perfect. Richter was a great way of saying "Okay so you've played 200 hours of Alucard! Now enjoy this completely new character with a completely different style for another 200!" Simply the perfect Metroidvania.

The best moment of SotN:
As Alucard first goes into the castle

8. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (GEN)
9. Skies of Arcadia (DC)
10. Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)

A few changes: SMG2, NSMBW, SoA, and VC are newcomers to the list. Twilight Princess, Super Metroid, SMB3, and Terranigma are gone. OoT isn't really the best game I've ever played, but it's still my favorite. Mirror's Edge and SMG2 are tied for best platformer, and The Orange Box remains the best deal in gaming. Beyond Good & Evil and Link's Awakening swap places. Sonic 2 is still my second-favorite platformer.

1: Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
2: Devil May Cry 3 Selection Edition
3: Unreal Tournament 2004
4: Goof Troop
5: Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
6: Bayonetta
7: Pokemon Red/Blue
8: Diablo II
9: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
10: Super Metroid

For comparison sake from last year's, 8 of the 10 titles appear again. All basically in similar spots with a few switches. Perfect Dark and Fear Effect II both drop, in favor of Bayonetta and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat(I regret putting both FE and PD in anyways). Top two are still the same with no real challenge yet.

My list contains, 2 PS2 titles, 3 PC, 1 Gameboy, 1 360, 2 SNES, and 1 GC.

1. ZOE2; still retains the top spot. This is how one does a shorter title properly. There is no fat to the game. The basic melee + shooting doesn't have much depth to it, but that is help out a lot but a strong enemy set + level desing, and sub weapons. Combined, they allow for mecha bliss.

2. DMC3SE, still retains the crown even though I will say Bayonetta had better core mechanics and DMC1 had better enemy design. Why? It's still the best overall package. Combat in it became very fluid where unlike other competitors(NG or GoW). Defense and Offensive really felt like they were one. Multiple styles opened up a lot of ways to play, strong enemy design(Most notably Vergil), and an actual solid atmosphere and plot. This really made me enjoy it

3. Unreal 2k4. It's basically Unreal 99 on crack and balance thrown out in favor of scale. And goddamn, I fucking loved it.

4. Goof Troop, One of the legacies of Capcom/Disney. It's basically a puzzle adventure game. You move from area to area and have to solve the puzzle to pass to the next one. Defeat enemies through the puzzle, find treasures, etc. Admittedly it's strength is also it's weakness. You fuck up a puzzle, you have to reset. You leave an area, you have to reset. Want to go back in? It will reset. It's quite unforgiving in this nature.

5. Ages of Empires II, Sure most people got this the same way. Free when they bought a new PC. It wasn't the deepest, biggest or best at the time. But it just had this charm and accessibility to it most didn't match. It had just enough blend while still being a combat heavy title, they had enough simulation aspects to keep it fresh.

6. Bayonetta, the evolution of DMC. I already said it basically as the best combat. But sadly it was underutilized. Poor level design and enemy design drastically lower it.

7. Pokemon Red/Blue, this is basically when RPGs are at their best to me. Addictive as fuck and handheld. It's the deadliest combo since cookies and milk

8. Diablo II. Again, like Pokemon. An RPG that this as addictive as possible, but in a different way. You still have to collect everything through. This is the one thing no other Loot Whore, Action, Hack and Slash title has understood yet since DII. It's not about balance. I want to cast so fucking fast it breaks the game. I want infinite mana regen while showering enemies with Frozen orbs. I want to be able to tele right to Bal's room. Basically, I want to break your game.

9. Donkey Konga Best goddamn platformer ever. It's bloody simple. They give you a pair of bongos and you go at it. The design, the challenge, and everything. It oozes creative that just hasn't been meant since.

10. Super Metriod, Others will take care of this 20x better then I ever could.

I've never seen anyone else besides me mention this game even in passing. Definitely an underrated gem.

Kirk said:
Super Metroid has its flaws (length and difficulty) but it probably has some of the best atmosphere of any game. I think a lot of modern game design also draws inspiration from decisions that were started with Metroid 1, but truly honed in Super Metroid. Also it was admirable for the way in which it taught you how to use your powers, especially the "undocumented" ones.

The length of Super Metroid was actually just right IMO, and made it more replayable. It also helped that it was elegant in its design.

Final Fantasy VI is an easy one for me to choose if I have to pick my favourite FF game. It defines FF to me, since I'm a fan of the classic Amano / Uematsu team-up and I feel like the stuff that was brought in with Nomura's influence in FFVII changed the series for the worse. It's also amazing that a game with such a huge number of bugs can be so enjoyable. Great graphics, plot, characters, and music, along with a fun and varied battle system.

Actually, Nomura had been involved in FF6.

Tetris Attack is the most underrated game ever. In terms of raw competition, to me it's the chess of video games. No other game can strip away everything else and measure who possesses the most skill in interpreting a screen, making a strategic decision, and relaying the decision to his fingers in the space of a fraction of a second. Fighting games are good at this, but they don't have this level of abstraction, and there's always the vagaries of character selection and so on. 'tack is pure.

Tetris Attack is actually a hardcore favorite. I have a lot of respect for it, though I have a hard time keeping up.

My list:

1) Super Mario Bros. 3
2) Super Metroid
3) Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
4) Final Fantasy VI
5) Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
6) Baldur's Gate II
7) Street Fighter II (mainly Turbo)
8) Star Control II
9) Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
10) Donkey Kong '94 (GB)

The last one was my little dark horse vote. :)
