GAF's "Greatest Games of All Time" 2011 Edition (Voting ends Feb. 13 11:59 P.M PST)

subversus

I've done nothing with my life except eat and fap
These aren't my favorite games but these are greatest games of all times because they'd set some landmarks in gaming. Also I'd include a Mario game in this list but I can't remember any particular Mario game.

1)Bioshock
2)Doom
3)Fallout 1
4)Command & Conquer
6)Half Life 2
7)Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1
8)The Curse of Monkey Island
9)Devil May Cry
10)Deus Ex

Edit: damn this list is too small. Sorry Crysis.

1: Half-Life 2
2: Shadow of the Colossus
3: Deus Ex
4: Final Fantasy VII
5: Tomb Raider II
6: God of War II
7: Mass Effect
8: Dead Space
9: Resident Evil 5
10: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

And because it's more fun with explanations:

I was blown away by the original Half-Life 2 demo and blown away repeatedly throughout the main game. Episode One was a grower but, in retrospect, it deserves a lot more credit than it got at the time and Episode Two is the best game ever made. If I didn't feel it would be a waste of votes I would have Episode Two, vanilla and Episode One as my top 3.

Shadow of the Colossus is an absolute masterpiece. It's rare to experience a game with such a clear, strong, singular vision. I'm normally against open-world games, tending to need a more streamlined experience, but, while this isn't one in the traditional sense, it's the only game I've played where I'm happy to just wander about, finding new areas and taking in the scenery.

Deus Ex just hits all the right sci-fi points for me. It looked and played like shit when it came out and time hasn't been kind to it in either respect but the whole game is oozing with character and soul.

I'm not sure how much of my love of Final Fantasy VII comes from the "whatever-you-play-when-you're fourteen" nostalgia effect (well, twelve in my case) but I think it must be an OK game for so many people to love it. I have a lot of love for VIII as well (and X and XIII!) but there's a certain je ne sais quoi about VII that lifts it above.

I can't really defend Tomb Raider II, except to say that the environments are lovely. It plays terribly and looks atrocious but I've always loved the series and this was the highpoint for me.

I'm not sure what you call the God Of War games, genre-wise, but they are the best at what they do and God Of War II was the best of the trilogy.

Mass Effect's world is perfect. The visual style, the storyline, the characters, everything about it is like sci-fi porn. The second lost a little of the charm (a lot in certain respects) but the first is untouchable.

I can't think of a fault with Dead Space. It doesn't try too much but does what it does to perfection. I'm part way through the second and can't help but feel they've tried to extend themselves too much. It seems intent on making Isaac direct the action whilst continually throwing baddies at you ad nauseum. Being stuck on one ship, slowly working your way through its various areas with the story unfolding around you but without your direct involvement made for a beautiful, contained, tense experience. And I preferred when Isaac couldn't talk.

The debate rages on as to whether Resident Evil 5 was any good. As much as I loved 4, I felt that 5 improved upon it across the board: a modernised control scheme, a setting that appealed more to my tastes, more varied environments, no stupid midget baddie...

I never got into the MP but the Modern Warfare 2 campaign was superb. Ludicrous, pro-American nonsense and insanely over the top in every respect.

An honourable mention for Team Fortress 2, which I've played way more than these ten combined.

1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Halo 2
3. Super Mario World
4. GoldenEye 007
5. Pokemon Red
6. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
7. Mass Effect 2
8. Donkey Kong Country
9. TimeSplitters 2
10. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

This list was hard, I've had to miss off a few games that I have loved over the years. Ultimately I've gone for games which I not only enjoyed immnensely but also invested a lot of time into. Zelda and Mario were always going to be in my list (and no doubt a good proportion of other lists from people on here), but I've limited the list to one entry per series to add some variety.

Ocarina of Time has to take the top spot, it's the first game I can vividly remember playing all the way through. I've completed it countless times, and still love playing it to this day. Although other Zelda games have come close nothing has been able to top this gaming experience for me. Still get chills over the title screen. Loved pretty much all the other Zelda games however, and everyone should try at least one Zelda game.

Ordering these was pretty difficult too. It was particularly difficult for 2nd and 3rd but I went with Halo 2. I have a rediculous amount of played games for Halo 2 and it provided the funnest experience in online multiplayer I've had. No other game has come close to this in terms of online, it's not just the ultimate Halo experience but also one of the best games of all time. Although the Halo series has been (mostly) a whole lot of fun and have all provided great experiences, Halo 2 was the pinnacle for me and despite some of the other games in the series being more accomplished I couldn't choose a different game.

Super Mario World is my favourite Mario game. Mario games have been a staple of good quality and fun in video games for ages and I could have had a list full to the brink of Mario games, however if I had to choose only one game from the series it would be Super Mario World everytime. I don't know what it is about this particular game but I just love it. Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy & Sunshine are all excellent games too.

GoldenEye. how many hours spent in the campaign (how awesome was facility?) and the mutliplayer. The Nintendo 64 has given us plenty of games to cherish, but this one has to be pretty high up on any list. Just brilliant.

The Pokemon series has been one of the most successful things ever. I've played every iteration (of the handheld variety) and haven't played one I disliked. Silver was a particularly special one too, but Red has to take top honours for introduciing me to the world of Pokemon. It was a totally new type of game for me and I've loved the series ever since.

Mass Effect 2, KOTOR and Oblivion are all on the list. I've never really considered myself and RPG gamer but I've played and enjoyed plenty from the genre. These are the RPG's I consider the best ever. Mass Effect 2 was an accomplished and brilliant game, with excellent storytelling within a remarkable world. KOTOR was a new adventure in an established universe which got the balance between new and old perfectly right, leading to a gaming experience that is hard to rival. It's sequal was good, but KOTOR takes the spot. Oblivion gets on the list, even though I loved Morrowind. I definitely spent more time playing Morrowind and it is probably the better game, but I enjoyed Obilvion so much it had to get on the spot.

Donkey Kong Country is self explanatory, it is an excellent game which played magnificently and was played to death by me. Still my favourite Donkey Kong game to this day.

TimeSplitters 2...all the TimeSplitters games have been awesome. The multiplayer and the challaneges are what make these games, and TimeSplitters 2 had the best of both. when compared to the other games in the series. The game was funny, quirky, smooth and most importantly loads of fun to play with your mates. More TimeSplitters please!

9: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
10: Halo CE

The big loser on this list was Nintendo, when I first wrote it up they had half the games on the list but as I started making hard decisions they kept losing spots. Once I got past the top 5 I started really having trouble making up my mind what deserved to be there and what didn't.

A couple games I considered that didn't make it:

Final Fantasy Tactics
Demon's Souls
Xenogears
Call of Duty
GTA III
Symphony of the Night
Onimusha
Ninja Gaiden: Black
Super Mario Brothers 3
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Super Smash Brothers
International Superstar Soccer 64
Pokemon Red Version
Super Metroid

1- Super Mario World. Best game in the finest sagas ever created. Do I need to add more?

2- Persona 3: FES. Probably the best RPG / narrative game that I ever played, and one of the few whose characters were greatly written.

3- Civilization 4. This game is freaking eternal, everlasting, engrossing, a pure marvel of raw proper game design.

4- Ico. This game made me felt things that I thought that weren't possible to feel with a game.

5- Uncharted 2. The apex of ps2 era type of videogaming. Not that it is a bad thing, but quite the contrary.

6- Starcraft: Brood Wars. Not only the best real time strategy game ever, but also one of the most finely crafted universes that I have ever seen.

7- X-com: Enemy Unknown. A turn based game have never been so intense, period.

8- MDK. It revolutionized the genre and introduced elements decades before than their competitors.

9- Duke Nukem. Don't let its external appreance, wrapped up in cliches and macho bravado fools you: this was a revolutionary game in many respects.

10- Final Fantasy 7. Fuck the Neohive, this game was great and groundbreaking.

Honourable mentions: Zone of the enders 2, Valkyrie Profile 2, Vanquish, Mario Galaxy, F-Zero, Heavy Rain, Xenogears, final fantasy 9, Mother 3, Devil Survivor.

I feel somewhat silly making a judgement call on this (given that I'll never get around to playing all of the "frontrunners"), but oh well. From my own experience,

1: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
2: Metroid Prime
3: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4: Lumines
5: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
6: Super Smash Bros. Melee
7: Team Fortress 2
8: Super Mario Galaxy
9: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
10: Final Fantasy Tactics

Honorable Mentions: Tekken Tag Tournament, World of Warcraft (I've played this game far more than anything else), Starcraft, Super Meat Boy, Okami, Fallout 3, Tetris, The World Ends With You, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Was tempted to put Diddy Kong Racing in my list, saw a few people have it in. It was a very good game and I spent a lot of time playing it, but I just couldn't take anything off the list to fit it in. Heck I couldn't even fit GTA3 onto the list. Same thing for Ape Escape which was one of my most played games on the playstation 2.

4: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
5: Heroes of Might and Magic III
6: Baldur's Gate 2
7: World of Warcraft
8: Pokémon Red/Blue
9: Dragon Age: Origins
10: Super Smash Bros. Melee

Explanations:

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
I think this was one of my first games, definitely my first Zelda game at least. I remember getting into this game, wanting to find all the secrets. It had probably the best gameplay of all the Zelda games, and also a charm which I can't find in any games today. It was hard then, and still is, but not too hard.

Super Mario 64
Still the best Mario game, no questions asked. The levels are almost perfect and IMO the graphics still hold up really well. The levels were just so memorable, and had some great characters. It has almost flawless controls, which is something that can't be said about any other Mario game. Many like to argue that Galaxy has great controls, but I've never really felt that. Mario doesn't feel like a ninja anymore!

Counter-Strike
Probably the best online game I've ever played, and definitely the best shooter. It just feels so great to play, blasing those headshots. It's a lot simpler in concept than most shooters today, but so much harder to master, and I think that mix of accessibility and depth worked in its favour when it was still fresh. Although, it has gotten really hard for new players to get into as everyone still playing this game have been for many years already.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
This game is just magical. The overworld, the characters, the dungeons. In my opinion the best dungeons of any Zelda game, they're just so intricate. The water temple alone proves my point. :)

Heroes of Might and Magic III
I had so much fun playing this in multiplayer with my friends when I was younger, and I still do. It's hard to put my finger on what makes this game so damn fun, but I'd say it's the great graphics coupled with the weird basebuilding that the game actually has, and its RPG mechanics. It's pretty much an SRPG, though most people don't think of it as one.

Baldur's Gate 2
Great writing, great characters, great combat. I wasn't really much into traditional RPGs before playing this game, but it really turned me over. The AD&D rules weren't that hard to get on a basic level, however there's so much to know if you really want to dig into it. The game has an endless amount of sidequests, probably the most I've seen in an game, and if you want it to, it can keep you occupied for a veery long time.

World of Warcraft
Obligatory I feel, Blizzard created a masterpiece with this game. The art is just great, and they really managed to turn the Warcraft universe into something that can last for a long time. When I quit playing, my account had around a total of 80 days played. I'd guess that is about five times more than I've ever played any game, even games like Counter-Strike. It keeps you occupied, and it delivers.

Pokémon Red/Blue
When I was a kid I always carried a handheld with me, more specifically my Gameboy. Why? Because it had frickin' Pokémon! Any free moment I had, I was playing it. I've finished my Pokémon Red so many times that I've lost count, but I'd guess it's over 15 times by now. I've speedran it for the heck of it, and I've gotten 6 of my Pokémon to level 100. (some cheating involved, but not too much!) My best memory is probably when me and three friends spent three whole days playing through the game, aiming to catch all Pokémon. :) We did this just a few years ago, and boy was it a nostalgia trip.

Dragon Age: Origins
Again, Bioware delivers. This kind of game had been missing from the gaming scene since Baldur's Gate 2 came out, and it really was its spiritual successor. The writing was really good, and the characters really came to life with great VA.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
I have never been into 'real' fighting games such as Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, this is really the only one I can bare playing. and boy, do I like it. All my favourite characters are in this game, and the all control really well. I still play this game with my friends when they come over, and we have a blast with it.

Man this was a hard list to compile.

1: Ico
A true masterpiece in setting, narrative, emotion, relationship and just plain visual gorgeousness.

2: Portal
Valve truly perfected their FPS gameplay here. Some great puzzles well worth many replays to solve.

3: Half-Life 2
Taking a bunch of the lessons from the already awesome Half-Life Valve really raised the bar (ugh, I know, the book title, but it's such an appropriate phrase :) ) with this on action FPS games. Perfect pacing and storytelling in an engine that was just so damned pretty.

4: LittleBigPlanet 2
I played LittleBigPlanet pretty much non-stop for months after its release and I'm re-discovering that joy and more now with the new release. The MM folk have put together some fine platforming gameplay in the on-disk content, but also a bunch of other great content online. And then there's the other amazing content appearing from the community.

5: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Such a great game, both modded and vanilla. Sucked in so much of my time. Looking forward to replacing it with Skyrim on this list :)

6: Shadow of the Colossus
Quite a unique vision realised spectacularly on the PS2. I cannot wait to see this in HD on the PS3. And again like Ico it had the incredibly well-woven narrative.

7: Another World
Incredible animation working to tell a great story, in very much the same way that Ico does (ie without explicit dialog). And then there's the fun platforming too!

8: UFO: Enemy Unknown
Definitely the most tense turn-based tactics game I've played. Great management elements and challenging battles.

9: Syndicate
Causing chaos was just soo much fun.

10: Team Fortress 2
I sank way too much time into the original Team Fortress mod when I was younger. It easily and utterly replaced Quake as the game du jour. I don't get to spend the same amount of time online these days, but this really is a worthy successor to the original and it's a helluva lot of fun when I do get the chance.

Games that I remember fondly (or still play) and considered but didn't make the cut: Prince of Persia, Stunt Car Racer, SSX 3, Civilization V, Quake, Tomb Raider, Minecraft, R-Type, Flower, Beyond Good & Evil and Outcast.

I also remember being blown away playing Warhawk and Twisted Metal on the Playstation (bought as launch titles when the console was first released in Australia). They were so much fun, but I can see now how they were flawed in various ways.

Honourable mentions go out to: Phantasy Star Online, Etrian Odyssey, Guild Wars, Heroes of Might and Magic III, Mass Effect, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Shadow Complex, Pac Man Championship Edition DX, Cave Story and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

I tend to think of Super Mario Galaxy/2 as one super entity, but even standalone they're the most fun I've ever had with any game. I'd give the edge to SMG2 for having the leg up on its predecessor in every area except for music, where they sort of tie.

Chrono Trigger is still the best RPG ever, even after 15 years. I doubt this is nostalgia speaking, since I played it for the first time in 2009. Great story, characters, battles and music, with a ton of charm to boot. Why can't all S-E games be this good?

Super Mario Bros. 3 needs no explanation. It's the best 2D Mario game (You heard me right SMW/YI lovers!), and the best game on the NES.

Resident Evil 4 is amazing. It's a game that begs to be replayed. Wii edition is the definitive version having the Graphics of the GC version and the bonuses of the PS2 version, all with Wii remote controls for easy headshot action.

Pokémon Platinum is pretty much a place-holder for Pokémon Black, which is pretty much a place-holder for Pokémon Grey, which is pretty much a place-holder for... You get the idea. The games really bring out the stat lover in me.

Metroid Prime is without a doubt the most immersive gaming experience I ever had.

Fire Emblem is chock full of stat crazy goodness. Also serves as the only JRPG series ever to do countries right. FE7 makes the list in particular because I enjoyed the characters from it the most.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is the best RPG on the Gamecube and one of the few legitimately funny games out there. One of the best battle systems around to boot.

Mother 3 for having the best story in a video game ever and still being fun to play. given half a chance, it tugs at your heart strings in ways you never thought possible.

Also, all of my top 10 are available on a Nintendo console. I'm such a fanboy... ¬.¬

Super Metroid: I remember staying up all night as a kid trying to beat this game as fast as possible. I loved the atmosphere and music. Every upgrade pushed you harder to keep playing. The secrets and bosses were the cherry on top. Game and level design was impeccable.

Grim Fandango: What an epic tale. The best story and characters of any game I have ever played. The writing is sharp and the voice acting is memorable. The 3-D style adventure was completely new and brought along a new level of immersion. I would put the art style of this game amongst the best of the best.

Metal Gear Solid 3: The Boss. The ending climax of set pieces. The most memorable moment to me was when I was at the top of the mountain over looking Groznyj Grad in the distance. I knew I had to make my way there and I loved that I could see my destination miles away from the outlook point.

Street Fighter 2 Turbo/Hyperfighting: The most beloved fighting game of all time. Fixed all the issues of the original. Playable bosses and increased speed. The fighting game mechanics brought me endless joy.

Curse of Monkey Island: Still my favorite Monkey Island game. I was originally roped in by the visuals. Once I played the demo with Wally and Murray laughing my head off, I knew I would love this game.

Team Fortress Classic: I still believe TFC is the most skilled based shooter you can play. The class system brought diverse gameplay and creativity to your playstyle. While it was still a team based game, a single individual player could turn the tide with their leet skills.

Metal Gear Solid: A Kojima masterpiece. Never has a game combined the elements of stealth, action, and cinematics like this. This game ushered the way toward immersion unlike any other game before it. The amount of quality voice acting was unheard of on a console.

Valkyria Chronicles: Someone else bought this for me during Christmas. I had never heard of the game before. Once I watched the intro, I knew I was going to love the art style and music. The main characters had their relationships fleshed out, but it was the minor characters you recruited that gave the game its charm. The story book style menu just oozes creative vision.

Resident Evil 4: I heard so much about this game and I was afraid it wouldn't live up to the hype. Yet, I was still blown as away by the sheer content of this game. An action game that lasted over 20+ hours and never had a stretch of padded gameplay.

Street Fighter Alpha 3
: I just had so much fun with the world tour mode. It also helped that I finally found a character I loved to play as in Guy and Rolento. It was the first game I clocked in over 100 hours.

I cannot overemphasize how much the nods to Tetris Attack make me happy.
I had brought Tetris Attack to college with me and got all my roommates hooked to it. I really wanted to put it in my top 10 and I probably spent more time in it than any other SNES game.

What does this mean?

Countries are political, religious, ethnic, social, and national communities, which Fire Emblem alone captures (in his opinion). They're not just "kings and popes who order around everyone else," contra 1/2 of all Japanese R.P.G.s.

I ASSUME. A lot of people say the same about Suikoden.

It just feels like most JRPG kings rule over city states with no clearly sphere of influence and a populace in the single digits. The settings of most Fire Emblem games have clearly defined countries with established political structures, cultures and military. Even diplomatic relations between countries are explored. When someone wants to overthrow a monarch or invade a neighbouring country, you know exactly what is at stake.

It's not a deal breaker or anything, I just really appreciate when someone puts the effort in to do some real world building.

Oh, okay. I haven't really played a lot of JRPGs so I wasn't really sure what the differences were.

Is every top ten list that strays from the OP's requested voting format being voided? On one hand, that would take away nearly half of the votes. On the other hand, if you can't follow something as simple as number -> colon -> game title then I'm not sure you function well enough as a human being to have an opinion worth considering. Seriously guys, it's not difficult at all and it's like some of you just didn't even read the OP.

From my perspective if someone is going to take it upon themselves to do a voting thread, they can write some flexibility into their regex parser. :p
