Game Grumps (aka Egoraptor plays some games)

How I imagine most people feel watching Game Grumps play in this state:

Do you guys find this to really be entertaining? I'm sort of following this Mario playthrough and it's like... He's not even trying to learn a stage or explore or figure out the star. He just rages about how bad it is and flings himself off a ledge because he somehow still hasn't figured out the controls.

On a side note, Danny is too perfect for this world.

The moment of realness:

Danny: "Are we the worst-at-games popular lets players?"
Arin: ".........................................................yeah :/"

It's like watching a trainwreck, but yeah you're right it isn't entertaining.

I want my 10-15 minutes back when I finish watching some episodes. Grumps are wildly inconsistent.

Arin needs to hand the controller to Danny. I'd rather see him play and stumble and get better at the game than Arin.

So does anyone know what happened with Jon and why he left the show? Because I honestly stopped watching when he left and I'm not sure if this show is even good anymore....

No, we don't, despite literally hundreds and hundreds of pages of theorizing and conspiracy theories.

They had good output for a while and they've fallen off again. I wish they'd go back to variety. The Mario 64 vids have become painful.

First of all, I don't think anyone knows why Jon left. Secondly, as someone who did the same and has recently returned, sometimes it's better. Arin acts entirely different now, and for me the best part is when Danny just gets completely annoyed with Arin. I suggest watching Dog Island, although there is no annoyed Danny in that one, it's just greatness.

No one knows why.

With Danny, Arin acts more like Jon than he did with Jon there.

It's a weird dynamic. There isn't really a "grump" and "not so grump".

Maybe I'll check it out. Over the years I've been losing interest in Arin and Egoraptor. Some thing about his videos and personality just don't resonate with me like they did a few years back. Shame really since I was totally into his videos back when Game Grumps was still new. Guess I just don't like his humor anymore

One of the biggest issues I see with long plays. Because the tone you get from the beginning is pretty much what you're getting the whole way through. Obviously there are a exceptions but not enough it seems. Surprised that one-offs don't happen more often, but it does make it so satisfying when they do pop up. Since usually just a change from the norm makes them entertaining.

Mostly because you realize it's Arin whining at games he didn't pay attention to/sucks unreasonably at.

BOOM! Right on the money! Glad its not just me who notices that. My buddy (who actually introduced me to Game Grumps) swears by Egoraptor. Needless to say I dont participate in the love anymore lol

I mean, would you really care if he learned the state or explored? I don't watch Game Grumps to watch someone explore every nook and cranny, I watch it to see 2 people who don't really know how to play games....play games. Dans adorable though, he plays a game before playing it on GG. He gets masssive points from me.

Arin on the other hand? He should know better, so it's funny to watch him stumble and fail.

Doktor are you in like every thread I post in?

So did a lot of fans. Those sequelitis videos don't hold up as much as they used to.

Well as soon as he rolled out the Zelda video, the other two took a retroactive dive.

If we're going on over fifty parts now, yeah I expect someone to learn how to play a game.

The Castlevania one is fine since it's the most apples-to-apples comparison he's got. I kind of disagree with his comments on Castlevania IV because his major complaint (that the extra weapons don't have much purpose with the whip being more powerful) is like... You don't like that they threw in extra optional features? Well okay then.

Mega Man X one is also funny but it's not really him comparing MMX to MM, it's just raving about how great MMX is.

It combined with the Zelda sequelitis demonstrates something about Arin's gamer profile which is that he's stuck in an 8-bit mentality of game design. Mega Man is great because it can teach the player without being intrusive, but Mega Man also has two buttons. It doesn't need on-screen tutorials because you'll literally figure everything out just by hitting the buttons at the beginning of the game, and then everything in the game is contextual. 3D games are far more complex and sometimes require tutorials. Now yes, there are many instances where the tutorials are annoying and disruptive, but when you see something like in his OOT sequelitis where he complains about the spinning spike trap and it's like.. You can't keep track of an object moving in a fixed path on the Z-axis? And that's the game's fault?

(btw the "The game introduces a puzzle to you in a safe environment, allows you to 'master' it and then adds a twist to it that tests your skills" formula he talks about in MM is also in Mario 3D World's level design so I wonder what he thinks about that game)

There was a moment in the Sonic 06 play through (which Sonic 06 is NOT a good game at all but I still feel this is worth mentioning in its favor) where Arin was playing as Silver and didn't know what to do, walks straight towards one of the question mark tutorials, then deliberately circles around it while complaining that he doesn't know what to do. Jon gave him shit for it but there's countless times in the Mario 64, Sunshine, Wind Waker, Sonic Boom, Sonic 06 etc. play-throughs where Arin flails around because he didn't pay attention to something in the game that explicitly told him how to use a certain ability or solve a certain puzzle. Danny figured something out in the Sonic Boom play-through that Arin dismissed for several episodes, figured out on his own and was just like "Oh, well it's still stupid"

Game Grumps is a silly comedy show so it's not that big of a deal that they suck at some video games, in fact that often adds to the joke - but when he wraps it up in honest game critique it's hard to take anything he says seriously when you realize how many of his problems with a game just come from him playing badly.

Joining the grump dynamic discussion, I really preferred the Jon/Arin dynamic mostly because they had overly silly and emotional out bursts. They just played well off each other and it was goofy practically every episode.

Arin and Danny are my favorite combo too. I actually get slightly sad when it's not them. Though it depends on the pairing.

When is DKC3 coming back? I liked Ross and Barry. They were getting so far into it. Maybe they didn't film enough before Japan and are just finishing off the current fillers before switching back.

And I say this every day... I miss StarTropics.

I just wish there'll be a future Mario Party 10 episode where Danny comes back and play as Bowser. Or just a Ross/Dan Steam Train again.

I think it would be great if Danny plays up being grumpy, for him not being involved with any of the Grumpcade episodes and with him also playing as Bowser.

Arin is just a conundrum. He doesn't have the patience to read two lines of dialogue that tell him crucial information that would help him not run around in circles forever, yet he has the patience (and skill) to beat Ninja Gaiden and other difficult 2D games. He doesn't have the patience to simply take 2 minutes out of his time to kill the electric ChuChu that keep hitting him, preventing him from solving the easy puzzle, but he does have the patience to keep hitting his head against a brick wall by trying to solve a puzzle while being hit over and over again by enemies.

He's not actually bad at games as long as they're 2D. But for whatever reason he simply can't wrap his head around the 3rd dimension. It's very strange.

But it's fun. And Dan is always great.

I really like Dan and Arin. They're my favorite combo. It was hilarious seeing them so tired and out of it after Japan.

Although I'm not one to get frustrated at people for playing games badly so there's that. I care more about the conversations.

I don't get frustrated if they're playing badly. That can be funny. Look at Battle Kid or Action Girlz Racing. Those are two of my favorite episodes ever. My problem is when Arin is playing a game, and he's bad at it, but he starts blaming the game instead of his poor skills.

I get that some games are bad games, but something like Mario 64 is not. He's just really bad at it and for whatever reason (whether it's because he's concentrating on improv or just normally plays that way) fails to use his brain or try to figure out what he's doing wrong when he's stuck. He just throws out the 'poor design' card, and it paints him as a petulant child. He also stops being funny when he goes far enough in this rabbit hole.

Their conversations are becoming fluffier and Grump centric. I'm on the fence about unsubscribing, because I keep expecting for Arin to play and commit to a game he won't feel obligated to play for the channel, or for dan to actually try games that aren't from the NES era.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I find the recent episodes of mario 64 to be hilarious. As I do most of their tired gameplays.
As long as Arin doesn't give into Dan's complaints and just go to Bozer, I'll be happy. I want all 120 stars. I don't want this play through to end until they collect that last one. Even if it takes 100 episodes.

Tick Tock Clock is amazing. I love that he has had it do 3 out of 4 modes so far and still hasn't figured out why the gears and pendulums keep changing speeds. And Dan hasn't helped at all. Though to be fair, it is tricky to find out the specific method when you Google. I found the exact method on Mario Wiki in tiny text on the Tick Tock Clock page.

Minute hand on the:
12 = Stopped
3 = Slow
6 = Random
9 = Fast

I think we can all agree on this proposal

Super Mario 64 needs to do fast-forwarding more often. There's WAY too much non-progress going on, and frankly, I think a lot of very funny moments have come from FFed segments. We'd still get normal-speed clips of Arin getting super pissed like he did in Tick-Tick Clock recently, but without the fucking around. I think we may have been at 100 stars by now, but honestly, I think Arin is against FFing, and it's hurting this series a bit.

While I don't think it's as smartly designed, I find a sharp irony in how Arin talks about Zelda's freedom, and how you have to figure things out for yourself - even things that would involve randomly bombing walls - but in SM64, he complains about how obtuse things are and how things aren't self-explanatory (even though they sometimes are).
