Games that outdid the games that inspired them

Banjo-Kazooie>Mario 64

More complex level design and enviroments as opposed to the "basic" (but still good) level design of M64

Tighter controls that still feel intuitive (for example flying and swimming are much better in BK)

Introduction of elements borrowed from adventure games such minigames, boss battles, fetch quests ect.
I nominate Jak and Daxter: TPL for similar reasons.

I preferred Gamera 2000 (PS1) over Panzer Dragoon. Even though its a pretty ridiculous licensed game and you don't even play as Gamera. In the end it was a clone of PD, but I ended up enjoying it more than the game it copied.

You're not alone on that one. Great game (the crappy acting is so funny too).

Some of these responses are frightening... RE4 is one of the best games of all time and many of the ones mentioned to be better then it, are not. I'll leave it at that.

My initial picks
Wolfenstein 3d < Doom
Super Metroid < SOTN

I got plenty more...will have to think.

I'm going to state right here, that whoever thinks Shadow Complex is better than Super Metroid needs their head checked.

FACT!

I love BK but you're saying it has better flying and swimming? Those two things were two huge blemishes in an otherwise incredible game.

Shit another one: World of Warcraft > Everquest
What? The games are nothing alike outside of both being MMOs. =\

I found Everquest to be a much more immersive experience.*

Think it's better than GoW2? If so I'm buying it.
Castlevania is a much more janky and less polished experience. The game does know how to set a good mood and has fantastic cinematic work.

I don't think claims such as the one you've mentioned originated in somebody's head.

The combat systems are almost the exact same thing, melee classes just didn't really have abilities in EQ like they do in WoW.

EQ was certainly more immersive in terms of it's world though back in the day before Planes of Power.

You're an awful person.

Honestly, I disagree with just about every claim made so far in this thread.

Just Cause 2 is better than every GTA game combined.

GAF, you slay me.

Donkey Kong Country 2 > Mario platformers

The DKC games clearly ape a whole lot from Mario, and with DKC2, I feel like they surpassed them. So much level variety, so many cleverly hidden secrets. Plus the graphics, mindblowing from a technical viewpoint back then, but still appealing thanks to the moody design and animations that give characters a lot of personality.

And don't even get me started on the music.

Darksiders depending on which inspiration we're talking about. I definitely enjoyed it more than any Zelda but not more than any of the god of wars, though the combat was better.

Also agree with Terraria, that's quite an amazing game I picked up a few days ago and way more fun than Minecraft was.

Saints Row was another great choice. I already think 2 embarrassed GTA 4 and from what I've seen of 3 Volition's going to take that ass kicking even further.
