Games that outdid the games that inspired them

Splinter Cell > Metal Gear Solid

Get rid of the terrible, intrusive anime story and overly long cutscenes, and instead focus on making the stealth gameplay amazing.

Instead of a black and white YOU ARE IN YOUR ENEMY'S CONE OF VISION vs. YOU ARE NOT SEEN, YOU ARE MAKING NOISE vs. YOU ARE NOT MAKING NOISE, you now have to focus on how much light you're in, and how much sound you're making. Let the player shoot out lights to help with that first one. Give the player full analog control to just hammer in that latter one. Do I want to move a tiny bit faster and risk making too much noise, or keep moving at a crawl and remain silent?

Give the player a camera actually suited for a 3D game, not an awful overhead camera designed for a 2D game.

When the player needs to know some new information, have his support tell it to him in real time while he continues to play, don't freeze the game and make me stare at an almost completely static screen while people ramble at me.

Get Michael Ironside and his inherently awesome voice to do the main character, instead of David Hayter trying way too hard to do an awesome voice.

Stuff like that.

I thought he said Image Fight inspired NG

I could've sworn that in an old interview, he was asked about Devil May Cry because they assumed that's what inspired NG. He replied saying that he has OoT to thank for NG, not DMC. I could be wrong though, I only vaguely remember that.

I love BK but you're saying it has better flying and swimming? Those two things were two huge blemishes in an otherwise incredible game.
I dunno man, I replayed both games recently and I stand by my opinion. Flying in m64 is clumsy as hell while I feel free to go anywhere when I fly in BK (the fact you can go higher than the place you started really helps). Same thing about swimming: I feel that i BK is more precise and way faster (especially in Tooie when you can press a+b togheter).

THRASHER: Skate and Destroy > Tony HAWKS Pro SKater

I doubt Thrasher was inspired by THPS at all. Aside from both games being about skateboarding, the gameplay was nothing alike.

Okami is the best Zelda ever made.

It was definitely the best Zelda game on ps2, that's for sure. Well, maybe second best.

I love Dead Space, but I don't think it's widely considered to be better than RE4.

It should be.

I preferred Gamera 2000 (PS1) over Panzer Dragoon. Even though its a pretty ridiculous licensed game and you don't even play as Gamera. In the end it was a clone of PD, but I ended up enjoying it more than the game it copied.

The First PD, sure. Not Zwei.

Forza > Gran Turismo

It looks like this very well may be the case with Forza 4, if it wasn't already with Forza 3.

Donkey Kong Country 2 > Mario platformers

The DKC games clearly ape a whole lot from Mario, and with DKC2, I feel like they surpassed them. So much level variety, so many cleverly hidden secrets. Plus the graphics, mindblowing from a technical viewpoint back then, but still appealing thanks to the moody design and animations that give characters a lot of personality.

And don't even get me started on the music.
I agree with all of this.
And throw me in the Symphony of the night>Super Metroid crowd as well.

People, no third person shooter surpassed RE4, reviewers like to talk about how old the RE4 type of gameplay we recently saw in Shadow of the Damned is, but the true is: RE4 is still unparalleled in terms of level design, weapons feel, bosses and general gameplay.

Stop being wrong.

Demon's Souls >King's Field (+Shadow Tower and Eternal Ring)

DS soundly thrashed its predecessors in terms of both critical and commercial success, and will probably be one of the better remembered games of this generation. The atmosphere, level design, and general feel of the gameplay were pretty darn similar, but the added character customization, modern game engine, shift to third person, and overall increase in content really made the series shine.

in terms of 3rd Person action Shooter Mechanic
Killswistch < SOCOM < Ghost Recon(this gen) < Gears of War < Uncharted < Vanquish(so.fuckin. Responsive)

Arcade racing
Burnout < Motorstorm

Action Combat
Devil May Cry < Ninja Gaiden < Devil May Cry 3 > Ninja Gaiden 2 < Bayonetta

Having your own opinions is cool, and I'm for it.
That being said, anyone who shares this opinion is a maniac. Maybe New Super Mario Bros... but better then Mario 3, Mario World, and Yoshi's Island? I'm at a loss for words. Someone also said Banjoo Kazooie is better than Mario 64? Maniacs.

Also, a lot of these mentioned are spiritual successors.

Guitaroo Man > PaRappa the Rapper
Tetris Attack/Puzzle League/Panel De Pon > Tetris
Mutant League Football > Tecmo Bowl

Not that I'm trying to downplay your post or anything but I thought it was common knowledge that Splinter Cell was a better stealth series than MGS? It just seems odd that anyone could possibly disagree and bring up an actual argument for it.

Obviously we're ignoring Conviction here.

Once you are able to aim with a mouse in RE4...god tier. Don't forget about the amazing atmosphere. RE4 is an easy choice for one of the best games ever.

Maniacs you say? you don't find my opinion cool at all!
I also contemplated Banjo over SM64 myself but the crazy acrobatics of Mario 64 just about saved it

OP had it right, add me to the Dead Space >>> RE4 pool. RE4 was a better action game, But Dead Space did Survival Horror 10x better than RE4. Leon was a commando out for blood. Isaac was trying to survive. RE4 threw piles upon piles of ammo at you and even then have the provision to melee your way through. The limb emphasis was way better than RE4's Head Shot ---> Chuck Norris kick.... and added more variety in the gameplay allowing you to optimize the way you wanted to deal with the kills. If you were good you could use the kinesis module for almost any mobile object around and it was really helpful but nothing that could be abused.

Dead Space also didn't have to resort to the "Sprint towards and then stop and stalk when you're 10 feet away" syndrome the plagas did in RE4. Sure RE4 might have been broken in difficulty if they didn't do that but Dead Space cleverly gave you the stasis module to use to counter that and instilled the feeling of terror far better than RE4. Seeing the necromorph crouch and fold their limbs together while still rushing towards you put me in the edge of my seat far more than when the plagas simply sidestepped you.

Dead Space you can move and shoot, INSANE improvement.

I also loved the way you could level up in Dead Space over the Merchant in RE4. You could either use up the nodes you collect around the ishimura to level up your rig and weapons or you could use them to get access to ammo stores. It really provided some tension about the consequences you might face with your choice yet rewards you accordingly.

The atmosphere in Dead Space I also felt was way better than RE4. The village was pretty well done at first, but once the music stopped, you knew you were fine
Except for fridge guy
. In Dead Space you were never safe no matter what it felt like. And going into space for the first time having a clear view of the stars and planets was spectacular and wonderous.... and then a necromorph leaps onto you making you realize they don't need oxygen at all and you aren't safe anywhere.

Although it might not be of as importance, but the plot in Dead Space was also far superior than RE4. There was always a sense of curiosity and mystery behind what went down there and why it all happened. I'll be honest, I never cared about any of those zealots or plagas dudes and whatever saddler's evil plot was.

And lastly, Kinesis Basketball was a very clever way to homage RE4's shooting gallery.

RE4 was a brilliantly designed game, but Dead Space was MASTERFUL. I only wish Dead space would adopt motion controls for it like RE4 and 5 did, it works so well.... You HEAR THAT VISCERAL!

Well that would just be boring.

MGS3 Subsistence > Splinter Cell

And yeah, Conviction botched the franchise.

Ninja Gaiden Black >>> Bayonetta
I think people just tend to forget since it has been a while and Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 were subpar.

Resident Evil 4 > Dead Space 2 > Dead Space
BUT
Dead Space 2 > Dead Space > Resident Evil 5
The way I see it, the brilliance that was RE4 is behind us. Dead Space is the premier survival horror game for this gen. There are aspects of Dead Space that surpass RE4, but overall RE4 is still better.

Assassin's Creed has eclipsed Prince of Persia

Comparing apples and oranges. One is open world, and the other is linear(among many other things as well).
If you mean it's eclipsed 2008, then that's a different topic I guess.
