Games that outdid the games that inspired them

Just finished up Dead Space and am well into Dead Space 2. At the same time I just finished RE5 and all I could think was "damn....Visceral out Resident Evil'd Resident Evil"...everything about Dead Space is RE4 and 5...but better. Better story, better characters, scarier gameplay, no cheesiness (outside of
betrayal scenes
), and (much) better setting. Its like they took the RE formula and just made the best horror game possible and topped everything that was laid out by Capcom.

Some other games I can think of that did this was Okami...in that it out Zelda'd Zelda... and Vanquish in out Gears of Waring Gears of War so any other games out there that while they may not be original gameplay-wise took a formula and just went crazy with it out doing the games that inspired them?

(And Capcom if your all about outsourcing games a Visceral Resident Evil may just be the best thing ever)

EDIT: Thinking of doing a LTTP on Dead Space...it is one of the most forward thinking games I've played in terms of streamlining design without lowering the challenge or fun

Oh there's cheesiness, almost everything in Dead Space is cringe-worthy. But the game is totally serious in its sad attempt to tell a good story, unlike RE4, which can basically be filed under intentional comedy, and is a smashingly hilarious success at it.

I love Dead Space, but I don't think it's widely considered to be better than RE4.

You're right, it's not.

Mike is a better character than anyone in Dead Space.

imo
Resident Evil 3< Parasite Eve 2 < Onimusha < DMC < Ninja Gaiden < Bayonetta

although genre kinda split once GOW entered the picture

Bayonetta > every other game in this genre.
While true, was it really inspired by anything? It's basically as if there wasn't another character action game after DMC from the prospective of Bayo I think.

Dead Space/Dead Space 2 are definitely better Resident Evil games than Resident Evil 5 was, but neither is even remotely in the ballpark of Resident Evil 4 in my opinion. The Dead Space series doesn't hold a candle to Resident Evil 4's pacing, variety and balance. Both Dead Space games suffer from repetition.

You really think Dead Space > RE4?
You can't say RE5 inspired Dead Space when Dead Space came out in 2008 and RE5 came out in 2009.

Both games are survival-action-horror games. RE4 is again a lot more slower paced than Dead Space and is more about making sure you take calculated actions (like fighting those Executioners or Gigantes it wasn't just about unloading as much firepower as you could into them but about spacing and proper positioning.) Dead Space felt a lot more frantic to me, especially cause enemies were much faster, plus you could move while shooting which didn't necessarily mean that the controls or game was better, just that the styles of the two games were fundamentally different.

and Vanquish in out Gears of Waring Gears of War

This is so silly. Vanquish is nothing like Gears of War. They play completely differently. Vanquish is like some kind of hybrid of third person shooters and action games like Ninja Gaiden. In Gears of War, you plant yourself into cover and stay there. In Vanquish, cover is where you take a breath.

Uncharted has more in common with Gears of War than Vanquish does.

"Just finished up Dead Space and... "

Well I had nothing to add now :( since you stole mine.

RE4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dead Space

errrr
banjo kazooie > mario 64
TimeSplitters 2 > Goldeneye
Earthbound > Dragon Quests
Shadow Complex > Super Metroid
Crackdown > GTA series

Banjo-Kazooie>Mario 64

More complex level design and enviroments as opposed to the "basic" (but still good) level design of M64

Tighter controls that still feel intuitive (for example flying and swimming are much better in BK)

Introduction of elements borrowed from adventure games such minigames, boss battles, fetch quests ect.

In before some lunatic suggests Shadow Complex was better than Super Metroid.

I want to be that lunatic.

... actually I wouldn't say that it's better, but I pesonally enjoyed it more. I can recognize Super Metroid is a better achievement in gaming.

Well maybe Dead Space isn't as great as RE4, but still it added way more to the formula than RE5

But Dead Space was inspired by RE4, not 5. Thus it doesn't work in this thread if RE4 is better than Dead Space, IMO. It really doesn't matter if DS is better than RE5 since it wasn't it's inspiration.
