GameStop opens preorders for Nintendo Switch

What are the chances Nintendo lowballs their initial supply yet again and not all preorders are fulfilled?

They might be cautious, but I can 100% assure you Gamestop themselves will maintain certain allocation of Switch stock (AKA too much of it) just to force Web-In-Store Bundles on everyone who "missed out". Which, of course, will be marked up with games/accessories you have no interest in.

I was in a gamestop yesterday before they closed and asked about switch preorders. They said something about having more info on the 12th. Which just happens to be the day Nintendo has its showing.

You asked an entry level gamestop employee for information nobody has and they gave you an educated guess that anyone could have come up with. It's not a coincidence or inside info.

What happens whe you pay more for a preorder than his retail release price? they return the difference in money, products, or they completely ignore it with the excuse that you should be happy for securing the console at release?

In case anyone is really wondering if it's a placeholder or not, the page says

Nel caso in cui il prezzo sarà inferiore verrà rimborsata la differenza.

Which means you'll get the difference back (in money) if the price is lower.

I don't think enough members are old enough to remember this joke but I do. :)
Was that about the Wii? Hahaha

Is wrote in the description (that is in Italian so I understand a lot don't know what it says), but they will refund you the difference.

I asked about this at my local store and they said that preorders would go live on the 12th after the presentation FWIW.

Fuck you.

Yep but at least my gamestop takes down names in order we arrived and lets us get preorders in still. Sadly the problem with the ness fiasco was just that it took forever because they were trying to use the system which was running slowly and eventually crapped out. So while you still will probably get your preorder it just might take a while. Still really annoyed that one of the first people in line was a mom that called her kid up at the register just to ask what he wanted. Just completely wasted time to get more orders in before their system went down. But yea get there early so maybe you can get your order in before the computers start slowing down.
People keep saying Ness amiibo like the fire emblem amiibo didn't come out the same day.
I was second in line and the system was already a shit show by that point.

So where is the most reliable place to preorder a console? Preferably somewhere that will do a midnight launch. I don't want to have to wait on shipping.

OP gave me a heart attack this morning as I live in the US. I saw that our pre-orders should be live on the 13th, so I used some time off work that morning to grab one. This post made me think I was going to miss the boat. Damn you OP.

It depends on the retailer. Generally, a retailer using a placeholder price won't "charge" you for that price, but they'll still put a hold on your card. In that scenario, they charge the actual price once they know it and the hold goes away. I don't think I've ever seen a scenario where they let you put down say $999 in cash.

Well, 2 million units WW at launch is a known quantity, depends on pre-orders really, I expect shortages personally, then it comes down to how fast they can fill the channel and how long demand lasts.

Didn't Kimishima say that they are able to manufacture more than 2 million for launch, if it's needed?

It would be hilarious if Nintendo didn't allow for pre-orders in the same fashion as with NES Classic. Imagine the shitstorm.

At retail stores, they do not put a hold on your card or anything like that. You generally just run it like a real transaction, charging your card for whatever amount (whether it's a nominal fee, or a larger down payment). If for some reason, you put more money on the reserve than it ended up running, you'd just get the rest of your money back.

He did indeed. People are also forgetting that the "2 million shipped" figure is for the current FY, which ends on March 31. So they can absolutely change that number, but that initial estimate seems higher or lower depending on when Switch launches during the month of March.

I appreciate the correction! I was moreso thinking of online pre-orders when I typed that up. I live in the U.S. and I don't think I've ever seen a retailer here that will take in-store pre-orders without a retail price. That being said I've never really looked, so I'm sure there's an example somewhere.

That would be quite the show! I know I would be really pissed off, that's for sure. Not a chance of that happening with an actual console release though. They want those pre-order numbers to gauge hype and adjust units shipped.

I have about $300 from trading in snes-n64-GameCube-Wii-gba-ds lite so it's only fair I use that money to buy the next Nintendo system :p

GameStop will probably do it the following day after the direct , same with Amazon , target, wal mart, Best Buy

...because it's always a good idea to launch a preorder program for a console ahead of getting pricing and allocation numbers from the manufacturer. Solid plan.

Last year around this time in January when they did the direct for the twilight princess and they had those 3DS Zelda versions they went on sale immediately after it went off. So you may want to wait and keep a close eye right after it ends.

Wasn't there a reddit post from someone in the gamestop US supply chain claiming that US preorders would open friday the 13th (morning after the switch event) as soon as they opened? I'll be camping out at mine for 2-3 hours before they open.

IIRC system preorders usually have a 50-100 dollar deposit required. I think PSVR was 100 and PS4 pro was 50, but i'm not 100% sure about that.

If 2 million supply worldwide at launch is accurate, there will likely be shortages. In terms of preorders being fulfilled? Hopefully retailers don't screw it up. But getting it without a preorder will probably be tough at first. Scalpers rejoice. -_-

Going to preorder this right after work today. Or during work.

Edit: Ah, motherfucker, EU? When does the Amurica one start?

Is it sad that the only thing keeping me from preordering one is my fear that it won't have an achievement / trophy feature?

Shame on me. Yes, it is.

Why do you think having prime would be an advantage? Unless you are in a prime now area after it's out maybe..
Not really an advantage other than the potential for day-1 shipping or at least fast shipping. I guess it's more about being a frequent Amazon user than anything else.

Plus I have an Amazon Rewards card so putting a $300 purchase on it will net a nice bonus.

My plan is to reserve at BestBuy, GameStop as Amazon. Which ever I can get first is the one I keep.

All games will be at BestBuy though

I'll just walk into Wal-Mart and grab one off the shelf on launch day

Scenario 1: Switch is popular, the launch supply sells out quickly, and finding one becomes difficult.
Scenario 2: Switch isn't quite as popular as Nintendo hoped, but the launch supply sells out anyway due to Nintendo's usual small supply, and finding one becomes difficult.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that it's extremely likely that one of these will happen.

If someone is still not so sure about that price being a placeholder, at the end of the Gamestop page it says "if the price is smaller, we refund the difference".

Doesn't that essentially mean that the price is a placeholder?

Or it could be like the Wii U and there are tons of units on the shelves.

Supplies of Wii U were also limited. The Deluxe unit sold out in many places, forcing some folks to either wait (and possibly change their minds) or buy the inferior-in-every-way 8GB package. I really hope they focus on a single SKU this time. And if they still insist on two SKUs, I hope the console itself is the same between both. It was just another issue with the Wii U launch.

They're gonna fuck up the launch just like they have with the Wii, Amibos and the NES Mini.

Yeah, because driving up demand is really fucking up!

If amiibos and the NES Classic were widely stocked, nobody would have bought them. Frustrating for the consumer, but genius by Nintendo.

Is it better to preorder it now or after the 12th? I want to preorder it ASAP but my last preorder experience doing that didn't work out well. I preordered Smash Bros Wii U and Game told me they'd upgrade it to the adapter bundle when more information came out. I go in on release day and they didn't upgrade it, so I didn't get a GameCube adapter with it which I was pretty annoyed about.
