Oh my word this movie, the narrative and characterization is likely to be a mess but the visuals! this is going to be my kind of fun film. I can't wait to see it.

This and the trailer for Valerian/City of a thousand planets have satisfied my need for interesting alien/Sci-Fi aesthetics.

Everything looks great except for ScarJo.

She's not acting. She's just being "Action Movie ScarJo" which is what annoys me the most. Could've litteraly put her lines in any other generic action flicks

I have no idea why people are surprised about how good it looks visually, say what you want about Snow White and the Huntsman, but Rupert Sanders is a very competent visual director.

And again there is one thing, without Scarlett the movie would not have been made. And of all the Hollywood actresses, she does comic and anime movies with full professionalism, no "haha, yes I know, but I will do "real" movies afters this again" in interviews afterwards.

So I will not join in in the Scarlett bashing. She plays those roles, keeps movies like this made and also stands to the product.
That's the sad reality of the situation, but I guess it's chicken and the egg. If no one ever casts an Asian actress to lead a film, then there will never be an Asian actress who will be big enough to lead future films. I think Lucy Liu was the last one to do it, but of course she's aged out of starring in films a while ago and no one has really replaced her.

Thought it looked great, surprisingly so.

Is it the same as the anime? No. Do I care? Not really. It's a live action remake for a different audience. As long as it's good, that's all I care about.

It went from "don't care" to "I'll watch".

That looks terrible to me. Like badly composited, badly modelled and badly rendered.

Yeah - to my eyes, there's something off about the ultra-smooth, almost matte-like texture. Doesn't seem to reflect light properly or something. Could just need a couple more passes...

For what it's worth, the rest of the visuals seem to be on-point.

As far as I'm concerned this is the best possible outcome for a hollywood remake of an anime like Ghost in the Shell, it really looks like they put a lot of care into it. Maybe the movie is a mess plot wise, but I can see the effort they've put into the visuals and I appreciate that. This could have been far, far worse.

I'm starting to realize that's not actually a bodysuit the character is wearing, that's how she looks "naked."
So she's a Barbie? If that's the case I wonder if the movie addresses the lack of sex. The scene with the black woman looks very intimate.

Didn't expected that kind of visual ambition for the movie. I'm not expecting it to keep he poetic aspect of the original but at least it looks really nice and unique for an American scifi movie.

Shirow's world would make people run against this movie. The sexuality he has in his drawings would never fly today. And not even Oshii used his style.

Pretty much. Just a few pages ago, another poster accused the director of being exploitative, not aware that he merely just trying to follow the original style of the manga/anime closely. It's always going to be a tightrope balancing making this movie, ensuring that the original style of the manga/anime is intact while also pleasing the general movie audiences who'd balk at some of the sexual imagery/styling of the story.

Love the setting, atmospher, pretty much nailed that, but that's about it.
Hope I'm wrong and this turns out to be the next Dredd.

Look alright. Still a bit unsure about Scarlet Jo's performance, it doesn't quite hit the mark of Mokoto from what is seen in the trailer. Will have to see.

Glad to see Batou's eyes are in, now to hope he lives up to one of my favourite characters.

Major has sex in the manga. (lesbian e-sex and she has a boyfriend)

Quite a good overview of the topic http://ghostintheshell.wikia.com/wiki/Motoko_Kusanagi#Sexuality

Though the reason for the lesbian stuff direct from the author

"I drew an all-girl orgy because I didn't want to draw some guy's butt."

Also in the manga her personality is very different from the other adaptations.

Just as an example

In the future they are more comfortable with their bodies. Who are we to judge?

It has nothing to do with Shirow being a perv.

Gits is basically a post-80's industrial world that has evolved with a major surge of technology and we have been piling it up. It's not overly designed. It's not a new beginning. It's there for us to see. This looks like aliens came to earth, wiped our cities and asked a bunch of hollywood artists to design their typical straight, symmetrical and clean lines that they hatefully shove down our throats.

LOL I don't have an issue with her casting due to the creators licensing it to Hollywood and co signing their decision, but please let's not act like this is some noble gesture on Scarlett Johansson's part in legitimizing anime for the big screen.

I also hope they don't switch themes too much from "Robots are the future" to "abloobloo why am I robot". Not knowing much about the Major made it more interesting. But knowing hollywood they'll go for the safe route

Looks pretty cool, probably the best one could expect of a studio adaptation really. Could use a more grit and a less smooth polish- I think that's what makes it look most like the Aeon Flux film. I also get Ultraviolet vibes too, which is not super great.

Also, I'm never sure if ScarJo is a good actress or not.

That cover of Enjoy the Silence is pretty great.

You'd have to assume Ex Machina had some kind of influence on the producers anyway.

I mean, it doesn't look like that 80s grunge no, but it does look, in my estimation, like what modern major asian cities actually look like, plus a bunch of holograms

Yes, she is a barbie and that is the point, she is full artificial being with a human brain, the last part of her which still is human and the conflict between that was always part of the GitS universe. The have a great story line about that in 2nd gig of SoC.

And of course sexuality means something different in that context, in the manga it is a cybersex scene.

Most people don't even know, that there is a whole lesbian sex scene in the manga which was cut out of the western release. Shirow is very kinky, sometimes which is not a bad thing bad people would be very angry, if they would add those themes to the movie.

In the future they are more comfortable with their bodies. Who are we to judge?

I would not mind, but you know how that would end. So at least we have something instead of nothing.

Not too big fan of Scarlett's look in spandex camo, but yeah. I know it's going to be horrible, but in a sense, I can't wait to see it.

I love ghost in the Shell. I love depeche mode. I love cyberpunk aesthetic. I love Michael Pitt, Kitano and (sometimes) ScarJo. But somehow the trailer was still underwhelming. Maybe it was the way it was edited or something. But ehhh. Honestly I think valerian looks better.

Even from a visual standpoint I don't think it's that great. Blade Runner 2 will look immensely better than this and if it doesn't then that will be quite disappointing.

One good thing tho is that I'm sold on motokos suit. It looked pretty good in motion actually

It looks way too fucking clean btw. I know Blomkamp is hella questionable but he would have done a much better job of the visuals here and if you want better, then Cameron of course. Blade Runner 2099 save us. Haven't seen any evidence of that being better aesthetically but I have faith

I think in this version that is her actual skin and not a suite like the anime movies. At least I can't see the point where it turns from the suit into her skin in her neck.

edit: Looking again yes it is a suit.

I could totally be mistaken, but it looks skintight to the point where it seems like she's not wearing anything. And in the shelling sequence it kind of looks like the same white/skin color motif and pattern on her body.

But the last ten years of GitS has been one story after another exploring different versions of the Major's past and her origins.

Thank you. Besides the god awful casting and the completely out of place music in this trailer that's actually my biggest problem with all of this but I didn't know how to put it into words.
Every enviroment looks like it was designed specifically for the scenes they're shooting instead of being part of a coheseve world that's been build up over time.
The Manga and anime had a world that looked like a continuation of whatever came before, just like the real world. This has none of that and simply looks like a bunch of props instead.
It's incredibly jarring to the point where I have no idea what the people praising the art design are talking about because it looks like boring rubbish to me.

So out of all GitS media, what would you say is the most essential to see? I've only ever watched the first few episodes of Stand Alone Complex, but figure I should see the original film now at least. Should I also finish SAC (e.g. 2nd GIG and Solid State Society)? What about the non-SAC film sequels?

Thanks!

if you only can see one thing: the 1995 film (not the remastered version 2.0!).
after that, stand alone complex season 1+2 (2nd gig).

the rest is pretty meh.

Visuals look amazing. Definitely like the overall vibe they went for here. Hopefully it turns out as strong as the trailer indicates.
