Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

Wait a second. Wasn't Micheal Pitt gonna play the Laughing Man? Now he's Kuze?

Why do I get a strange feeling this is going to be a horrible mix of all the popular scenes from the franchise?

It looks like cheap cosplay.

Some things work in anime but not in live action. They could give him some cyberpunk normal eyes with fancy pupil or something instead of trying too hard to stay close to the original designs.

I feel like Batou and his eyes are just as iconic as Motoko for the series. I think his eyes being opaque and pupil-less are pretty significant. I wouldn't necessarily hate your idea but I feel like there would be just as many people complaining if the design was completely different. There were already people complaining about some set photos where they didn't see he had the eyes.

There's nothing "anime" about Sucker Punch. And considering that movie was trying to deconstruct action movie clichés and heroines, Snyder would be a prime candidate to do a GitS film.

Zach Snyder's the type of person to watch Fight Club and actually believe in the stuff Tyler Durden does and thinks it's cool. Dude always misses the point of what he tries to adapt.

What are the essential viewings before this? Ghost in the Shell (1995) and SAC?

Yeah basically. Innocence (the 2nd film) isn't as good in my opinion, and Arise is terrible.

I would say watch both seasons of Stand Alone Complex first and then go back to the 95 movie. The 95 movie basically stands on its own and is not in continuity with the series.

This new movie is allegedly adapting part of the second season of SAC...seemingly with some parts of the 95 movie.

Laughing Man was never part of it. He is Kuze. But yes I am worried about too much mixing as well. Particularly mixing from the film if they're doing the plot of 2nd Gig if it's at the cost of things from 2nd Gig like the Individual 11 and Goda.

Because the trailer pretty much confirmed that. It's got scenes and nods to everything GitS related and that's only the trailer. Imagine the full film.

Yes. I never saw the sequel so I'm not sure if it's worth watching.

It should be called "Quotes in the Shell." Characters in that movie spout random quotes from philosophers throughout the movie. I wouldn't call it a bad movie though. It's still really atmospheric and creepy. But I was left a bit confused about what the overall mystery was and trying to follow the breadcrumbs. If there's one thing Mamoru Oshii seems to hate, it's have a clear defined antagonist.

Pitt has always been Kuze. And this is Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) so it very likely could just be a GitS greatest hits collection, who knows. The production design, art design, and cinematography are all totally on point though so even if it's a soulless poorly put together movie it'll be a cool experience.

I had very mixed feeling while watching the trailer. I've seen the original film and maybe half of SAC, though the SAC were scattered throughout the series and just randomly on while I was flipping rough channels. I don't have any huge love for the property that I am going into this with though. It just looked... Okay to me. Some of SJ's lines were robotic and emotionless which seemed like what they were going for and felt to me like they fit, but other lines seemed off. And the brief bits of plot/story that they dropped (lines about them saving her and the shots of her internals opened up) made me think 'Cool, we're getting another Robocop reboot.' The shots of the city looked interesting though.
I'll see it for sure, but probably through RedBox (or Netflix, if it isn't a 2 or 3 year wait for it) rather than in a theater.

I know a lot of diehard fans are dismissing this, but I'm willing to give it a chance.
I just hope SJ can surprise me in this and at least convince me she was the right choice to play the role.

Keyword: "trying"

They should have gone after Dolph for Bato, he is huge and has the face.

Looks like they dropped the ball with this one... and I was optimistic for it. I just don't think Johansen and Batou's actor really fit the part as well.

I know GAF is going to hate this and the first few responses prove that, but this is sooooo much better than I expected.

I'm 110% okay with a film that feels like a 90's action sci-fi film. Dark City, The Matrix, Fifth Element, Johnny Mnemonic...

It even has Michael Wincott in that shit!

So I never got around to watching Arise or the New Movie.

Are they really not any good?

If so that's a shame. SAC and 2nd gig are so damn good.

also 2nd gig opening/rise > season 1/inner universe

I'm a fan of the original film's soundtrack but is slapping that track over anything really all they need to do tide people over lol?
So far I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm fearing that it may be the production designers carrying the team.
This trailer sort of confirmed it for me. I've watched it a few more times now and the way it's been filmed feels uninspired and amateurish at some points. I don't know if I'd call it a high budget fan film like others but they're not far off.

Well, I would suggest everything personally, but yeah they seem to be the stuff this movie is pulling from.

I misread, I thought that SAC was a movie.

Can you stay with only the movie, or do you need to watch it all?

I used to love anime, but now I can only really tolerate anime when it's high-production value in a shorter and tighter format, as in the really big movies with beautiful visuals and animation. I just can't stand the format the tv-series are usually in.

But Micheal Pitt was casted as the Laugning Man. Was it all a ruse?

I hate when studios do this; cast someone and cloak their role for some stupid surprise. TBH, Laughing Man would be more intriguing than some digital Jesus.

Damn, it's happening isn't it?

I'm becoming disconnected from the GAF. I started feeling this way when I actually loved Jurassic World. Must be getting younger or I'm getting more forgiving. I literally saw nothing in that trailer that worries me, except maybe a few moments of Scar's dialogue. Visually it looks better than almost anything I've seen.

Yeah you can do. Just the movie is fine. SAC season 1 & 2 were made into 2 movies, Laughing Man and Individual Eleven if you wanna go that route.

What are the essential viewings before this? Ghost in the Shell (1995) and SAC?

Ghost in the Shell (1995 film) - essential
Ghost in the Shell (original Masamune Shirow manga) - not essential
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (sequel to 1995 film) - not essential, but recommended if you like the original film
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex S1 & 2 - essential
Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society (OAV film sequel to SAC) - essential

Ghost in the Shell: Arise (prequel/re-imagining) - not essential.

The compilation films are not the optimal way to watch Stand Alone Complex. Watching all the episodes is way better. Plus if you like the series it's nice to have more rather than less anyways. The compilations not only cut down the central plot of each season, they also completely omit all of the stand alone episodes, many of which are outstanding, and the character and world development that comes with them.

Yeah this is the most correct.

I normally don't hesitate to be critical about trailers (that Valerian movie looks like total trash), but everything about the art/production design and visuals here show me they really gave a shit with attention to detail in nearly every shot. I think people are just deservedly jaded about big Hollywood movies now since they almost always suck, and great trailers for bad movies is a thing that happens all the time. There's also the very studio-tested reasons for this movie being made now, between SJ being a certified BO draw and the rising Asian markets.

I've got the SAC compilations solely for the reason that they and the film and are the only SAC related materials that came out on Blu-ray here. I'm mostly done buying movies/anime, but i would definitely get SAC and 2nd GIG if someone would release them on BD.

But, as they said, if they don't want to watch hours and hours of an anime series, I would recommend the cut down films. Even if they aren't the optimal way of viewing it.

This looks so much better than I expected.

But I'm a little concerned about the "stolen past". I hope they don't make her past part of a big conspiracy. I also hope this is really The Laughing Man, complete with the insignia, and not just a name swap, using TLM's name for Puppet Master's story.

Edit: By the way, I wish they'd stop using that subwoofer "Doooooooom" in every single action film trailer.

Where is here? Because... https://www.amazon.com/Animation-Complex-English-Available-BCXA-1097/dp/B0156BMLEU/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1479067433&sr=1-2&keywords=stand+alone+complex&refinements=p_n_format_browse-bin%3A2650305011

I have a similar negative opinion of anime in general but GITS SAC is one of those top tier series that really makes me make an exception. The dub is fantastic and the production values are high quality. Both seasons are highly engaging. It would be a shame to miss out on brilliant episodes like "Jungle Cruise", "Poker Face", "Trial", and others. It feels quite often like a top notch western TV show. Not your typical anime. And it's one of the few I would ever say that about.

I'm not as familiar with he source material as most, but uh, wow this looks a lot better than I expected.

I didn't expect this movie to pop up on my radar like this, but I'm interested now.

I think had it been an Asian actress people may be less critical. Like you said, this is one of the most visually interesting trailers I've seen in years and looks distinct from the GiTS anime but also honoring the influences like Blade Runner. I'm sold already.
