Ok, I'm in. The main reason why I love the original movies and the anime so much is purely on the visuals and this movie looks like it's on par. Batou looks pretty goofy though.

Patlabor is a cool sci-fi thriller but Patlabor 2 is the best non-movie I've ever seen and that's a compliment. It's like Oshii was vehemently refusing the audience anything that they were expecting. You want to see the Patlabors do some cool shit? Tough luck. How about the familiar and beloved characters from the oavs and the first film? They're in the background somewhere... You want action? Fuck you, here's 15 minutes of rain falling on Tokyo but you get a Kenji Kawai soundtrack as a bonus.

One of my favorite films.

I feel pretty satisfied after seeing the "Making of a Cyborg" clip
That's pretty much how I hoped the opening would look like.
It's the most important part of the movie.

Wait, is this version going in a kind of
Robocop
direction where she is
a human augmented by cybernetics?
That's not how she was portrayed in the original film is it?

The production design looks on point either way though.

She's
a human brain in a fully cybernetic body.
Seems to be the same as previous versions.

Mmmh... I like what I'm seeing. :)

Let's hope the plot will be nice.

I even like Scarlett Johansson as The Major, actually.

At this point, after looking several japanese manga adaptations, I'm curious though: could you point me to the japanese actress who best fits the Kusanagi role?

Really hope they do something with Major's eye -- something like a flickering light is enough.
It's hard to empathize with her being an android just by SJ doing straight faces like she did in other movies, there needs some visual enhancements to support it.

Also...that full opening uploaded by IGN looks great. Goddamn that music!!!!

The movie looks quite fantastic, production wise and sticking to the source material plus screw it I'll go see it and hope that it is decent.
Just watched the intro with the orchestra for the original theme tune for the 1995 movie and I got goosebumps hearing that in its glory again.

I'm actually perfectly fine watching sci fi for visuals. I enjoyed (first watches) of Jupiter Rising, Man of Steel and Batman Vs Superman for those reasons alone.

I think you mean Jupiter Ascending.

They should give her the dead eyes look like in cod games also she should never blink. Just watched the newest trailer and It looks good I wont expect it to be a great movie but it at least OK. Fingers crossed it's not another Aeon Flux.

You could do an actual casting call you know.

It's like saying Tupac could only be played by a Hollywood actor. They cast an unknown who is pretty much perfect.

There is a difference between casting a low budget musical biopic and a big budget sci fi anime adaptation.

Are we talking about Straight Outta Compton? Wasn't the Tupac thing a cameo?

They worked much much harder on the main crew, to the point where Ice T's kid played him

Scarlett Johansson will carry the movie, no matter how good or bad it is. Especially in this post Brexit / Trump world, I fear that a japanese actress would of doomed the movie sadly. XD I wouldn't be surprised if it review really well as Scarlett has been on a streak of well received movies. Heck, she was able to carry Lucy which became a surprise hit and GITS is well known around the world, even if it's relatively niche.

It looks promising. Feels like if it wasn't done this way for a broader appeal, the moving wouldn't have gotten lit. I'll give it a chance and hope it takes risk especially in its sound track like the shelling sequence event.

Do think the problem with SJ is the hairstyle and her facial features do not go well together. Unlike when she was playing Black Widow in the Avengers. Something about the direction seeing the kind of facial expressions shes using so far do not seem to jive well with the character she is portraying. Far too soft looking. Then again do guess they want more of an emotional response from the audience as someone else mentioned allowing for people to be able to connect better with her character.

There's a Tupac biopic called All Eyez on Me.

It was Ice Cube's kid. BRONSON.

LOL WAIT you mean that wack Asian one, o god

I blame that fucking Geico commercial man

It's fuckin' me up, he's bein a dick for no reason! He doesn't even know those kids! GET AWAY FROM THEIR LEMONADE STAND

As someone who has heard of Ghost in the Shell but never actually got into at all I'll say this looks pretty damn cool. No idea how faithful or not it is to the source material but I'm really intrigued

Better looking than I expected, but that dialogue is throwing up some major Hollywood cliché red flags.

"You are the first of your kind" pfffffff

One of my favorite films.

Agreed.

Its place in my heart was cemented after the scene where the hypocrisy of Japan's post-war economy was debated for twelve whole minutes.
No one but Oshii could have given us that.

Before this footage I could not fathom a faithful recreation but now after seeing I'm convinced, especially with the casting and Scarlett - didn't feel the disconnect I had expected.

So thanks, does feel pretty good. :)

I thought you were boasting that you hated the movie since day 1 my bad.

The opening scene leak has me excited more than the trailer, I'm little jelly I'm not as pumped as you yet.

Maybe watch the 95 film after, you'd get a unique perspective compared to most in this thread.

One thing they should have done is that for action sequences, she should be wearing tinted glasses of some sort.

This would remove the expression from her eyes, much like Trinity/Neo and co. in The Matrix, and it worked really well. Would make her look at lot more badass, and as long as it's not just some sunglasses it wouldn't be too reminiscent of The Matrix, plus it would have some functional purpose.

Visually looks good. And, surprisingly, this applies to Johansson as well.

Can't feel if the story will be good by the trailer, but it's good to be cautious about it.

I'm REALLY suprised that they're nailing down the aesthetic and music this hard. From what I can tell, ScarJo really is trying, so I'm definitely more confident in her abilities for the role of Matoko. I hope to god that the writing and side characters don't tank this entire film

All this talk made me check out the original 1995 film. Maybe I just didn't get it but I thought it was OK at best. The tank fight looked so good though. I hope to see that here.

Hey i'm willing to give it a shot at least. Footage didn't look as bad as I though it would. I appears that they're actually doing their best to stick to the series' feel. Glad they're making the movie its own stand alone (heh) thing rather than trying to be a straight remake.

Stand Alone Complex is still the best GitS

Go watch the TV series, Stand Alone Complex, instead. A lot of people seem to think the 95 film is the end all be all but I really think SAC is the top notch GITS. The movie is still good but it's something completely different really.

The 95 film is one of those that isn't mindblowing, it's just consistent and entertaining. A good combination of junk food visuals and some philosophic introspection before it became required for a science fiction movie to ponder its navel.

The '95 film is really a pretty small, humble movie that gets in, gets out, and avoids anything too extravagant in terms of storytelling.

It's kind of a dangerous movie to hype to people.
