Gnomoria - PAYWHATYOUWANT (starting $0,25)

He was just making a joke ;) The obligatory "Pay what you want" joke. Pops up in every thread of that kind.

I know. :p

Should attempt to learn more about this game. Will this game make me feel stupid the right way (as in proves to be too intelligent)? Seems to be intelligent at least.

This definitely will help:
Gnomoria Wiki

Its not really a tricky/hard/complicated game. More like a small sandbox to play in. Those games, Dwarf Fortress especially, definitely still have depth if you want to look for it though.

Alright, going to bed. Have fun GAF! If any other questions arise, I'll answer them tomorrow if no one else answers.

Good morning GAF! Standing by for any questions.

Alright Toma, here's a super basic one. Fastest way to quench Gnomish thirsts? Where does a man look for rocks?

Answering in a few minutes. Hope your gnomes survive without me answering immediately :P

For the stones:

You can just dig stairs a few levels down, which then will automatically have stone.

Start on top by digging anywhere (Terrain -> Dig -> Stairs down).

Then do that 5 times, alternating the position every level. On XYZ coordinates the stair positions would be like
X:100 Z:100 Y:0
X:100 Z:101 Y:-1
X:100 Z:100 Y:-2
X:100 Z:101 Y:-3

And after that, you'll find plenty of rocks in the grey walls (Terrain -> Mine -> Walls):

Never played DF (or a clone) but in for one based on some Lets Play I saw ages ago for DF (or a clone, lol).

Also this question mightn't be relevant, but does anyone know the name of some 3D game that was posted on gaf a while ago that was touted as DF+RTS? It may have been a Kickstarter thread, IDK.

Bought it, been looking forward to it for a while now, but I think I'll wait with playing it until it's on Steam and a little further out of alpha.

Castle Story?

All are super awesome deals and I highly recommend grabbing this game. If you like my usual recommendations, grab it. You now have 80 hours to grab this game from the time this post has been made.

You know I always like your recommendations :)
Bought! Downloading it now.

Always wanted to play dwarf fortress, now I have the change to play something similar. I hope you can create some good buildings with it, like castles, palaces or awesome houses.

Thanks for the heads up! Bought it, been interested in a while and the promise of Steam release as well as SpaceChem + another game was too good to pass up for $10.

Yep, definitely possible. I did some simple stuff like:

and a huge ass sphere:

Yeah, I don't want to build houses either. I can appreciate that the game exists, but it's just not something I want to play. Oh well, I still bought it. Hopefully others can enjoy it more than I did.

Sorry to hear, glad you tried it though. There are all kinds of different experiences in games, and I think its very important to try more than just the genres people usually tend to stuck with.

Thanks for the prior tip, Toma.

For your booze shortage, there are two options. Check Build->Workshop->Food/Drink.

You can either build a well or a distillery:

wQJhs.png

As these games usually tend to have them, you need to get some prerequisites to build more complicated stuff. As you can see,the well demands way less ressources and is build faster, whereas the distillery will take you a bit longer, but in the end is very important to build eventually as it will satisfy the gnomes more. Also you can store the booze anywhere you want, whereas the gnomes always need to walk to the well.

For planks you need a sawmill : Build -> Workshop -> Wood -> Sawmill
For blocks you need a stonecutter : Build -> Workshop -> Stone -> Stonecutter

After that, you should be good to go for a well if you have two gnomes that can do those jobs. Check back on the workshops to see whether they still build stuff. If they dont, check whether you have enough stone and wood and whether there are gnomes that are able to do these jobs.

For the barrels, you need an additional workshop, the carpenter. But I think you'll find that out yourself :)

Last note, the placement of the well is very important. It needs to be placed ADJACENT to a land tile (so gnomes can access it) and anywhere on the Y axis above a water tile (so that it can access water from below).

Cheers, man. Great help. Here's a slightly more nebulous question...

...just how big should I make the initial rooms? What's a good size for, say, a starting storeroom? Dormitory? Any proximity/distance effects to building in a fairly spread-out manner?

SpaceChem, this and whatever they do next for ~ÂŁ6?

Been meaning to get SpaceChem for ages, I'm in.
Thanks for the tip off.

I could give you some numbers, but to be on the safe side I think the better solution would be to create a layout that would allow to increase the room sizes as needed, especially if you are still starting out:
ehSxl.png

That way, you can easily make the rooms "deeper" by digging out more walls later. The drawback for this is increased walking distance, as you already guessed. However, if you have those 4 rooms on each of 5 Y levels, you have plenty of rooms for everything without much walking if you build a staircase right in the middle.

If you manage to use stairs properly to build on multiple levels, the distance shouldnt be that far to affect anything, but theoretically, yes.It would be troublesome if you built one huge ass corridor with all rooms on the same level spread 500 tiles apart. Your productivity will suffer if your gnomes need to take 2 naps just to reach the food :P

Btw, specific room sizes depend on how you plan to set up your storage piles etc. I usually have a super large uber storage pile for everything (which I tend to make on its own level) and small dedicated storage piles, but everything would also work with only the big storage pile. Optimizing it is half the fun for me though, but many setups work.

I bought this game, thinking it would be a mistake.

8 hours later, I can guarantee you that yes, it's a mistake. If you like to do stuff other than play the game for 8 straight hours, that is.

Game is exactly what I wanted: simpler Dwarf Fortress that looked better. Yet, ever being simpler as it is, it drives me insane.

Sure, maybe I shouldn't play the game at 2x speed all the time and make the pieces I need of whatever material I have available. Maybe if I properly assigned professions other than the pre-defined ones I would get a better experience also. But hey, this was my first time playing it. :D

I'll prolly make another world and start another gameplay by reading some guides and help from the OT thread. Game is pretty good, and for a minimum 1 buck with a possible future Steam key, there's no excuse not to buy this.

If only I could properly understand the Stair's Down/Stairs up system. Do I need to create both, or will a Stairs Down also allow me to go up?

Nice to hear you enjoyed it! May I ask why you thought that it would be a mistake before trying? Too complex/intimidating from the Dwarf Fortress similarities?

Oh and yeah, these games lend itself very well to some very specific playthroughs, like only building above earth, not using wood, no booze etcetc. If you have any questions, I'll stand by :)

If only I could properly understand the Stair's Down/Stairs up system. Do I need to create both, or will a Stairs Down also allow me to go up?

If you build it from Y 0 to Y-1, you have a staircase connecting the two Y levels in both directions.

Because I would play it for 8 hours straight, just like I did yesterday. :D

Ah, lol. That was apparently a justified fear :P

To tell you the truth, there's some details with the AI that kinda bug me. For instance: One of my miners died of thirst while he was digging a huge block -5 deep. While I had 200+ drinks available on the top. Why didn't he just come up?

My other miner, later, got stuck on a Barrel full of Strawberry Wine and DIED OF THIRST?

Sometimes, workers would stay idleing walking back and forth when clearly there were jobs for them. And, late game on my "play everything at 2x speed" game, my farms just stopped growing.

I also wish there was an easy way to look through my population and assign professions based on stats. Sure, I can assign professions easily, but if I click through the gnomes itself to see their stats, I have to back out all the way to the menu and go 3 menus deep again - for each gnome.

I don't know if we're supposed to discuss gameplay in this thread or only the fact that it's on sale, but what about Soldiers? On my "I want everything now" strategy, I usually just leave them doing their jobs and, when a Goblin shows up, I create a new "patrol" point and assign the squad there. They drop everything and go "patrol the goblin" immediately, killing him on the process. Then I just take them back to their jobs.

Well, first of all. Feel free to discuss the game here for the remainder of the sale. Good opportunity to bump the thread, which in turn gets more people to buy it.

I definitely agree with the sentiment that there are still too many bugs. Considering the speed the dev is working on this game, I am not too worried about it, though.

Other aspects however, often proved to be a player oversight. If you give me your save file, I'd take a look why your farms arent growing anymore, because I am pretty sure those arent bugged. We had those issues a few times in the OT, where someone just overlooked something that the game failed to properly tell them. In the end, thats still the games fault for not letting the player know of course, but we noticed that many bugs, were actually player mistakes.

The menu thing is definitely annoying and I think I read somewhere that more easily approachable solutions to that are being searched for.

Yep, thats the way to do it. Also: doors still give access to goblins but it you made a huge storage pile of wood and fruit, you could simply build a wall where your fortress entrance is. Goblins cant enter and will eventually die of hunger.

A bit less than 60 hours left now to grab the game for yourself or to gift it to others (because damn cheap).

So how do I take care of dirt without stockpiling it? When I finsih a room its all with this dirt, and I want to stockpile things there. I know you can click a box so you dont stockpile dirt but what I want is getting it erased.

Isnt there an option to blend out dirt? If there isnt, the only option is a dedicated dirt stockpile. Just put it on its own depth level, and you wont notice it anymore.

I dont know how to create good holes with stairs now :( I want to dig deeper and I dont know how to do it.

Ignore it. There's no way to get rid of the dirt, other than make a stockpile for dirt and make the gnomes gather it. Make a small gathering point for dirt and put it with priority 1, and they will gather the dirt around that area and pile it on there. THere's no other way.

Now, what I want to know is, what the hell do I do with gnomes that "can no longer walk"? Will they eventually get better in the hospital or they're useless now?

He considers to eventually add artificial limbs, but for the moment, they are useless.

So um, I like games like FTL and Football Manager.

Do you guys think I might like this game?

Sorry for the weird question guys, but just wondering.

FTL, Football Manager and Dwarf Fortress (which this is a slightly easier accessible clone of) are among my favourite games. If that is of any help.
