Gnomoria - PAYWHATYOUWANT (starting $0,25)

If you just want to get down first, its enough to dig down stairs, then on the lower level dig a staircase into the wall adjacent to it. Its basically the same as dig stairs -> go down level -> dig wall -> dig stairs.

Go down like 7-8 levels and mine a huge area there. The deeper you go, the better stuff you find, however starting from level -10 or something you will also encounter some strong enemies that spawn in areas that dont have any torches. Have torches ready and block off ways you dont need atm by building walls.

Lol,i better stay at peaceful for now before going to combat and stuff :P

Yeah not a bad idea. Training gnomes and equipping them to kill goblins is pretty satisfying though.

So somebody said they wanted to see some pictures of my messy house. Here they are. I started playing on a Medium Map Size, because I didn't know how large they would be:

I7WL9.jpg

The outside: You can see my farms - strawberry on the bottom, wheat on the left, cotton below it, not pictured. You can also see my pastures and tree-farm (birch furniture gives you the biggest value increase on your propriety, it seems). They are, currently, marked for clippings and then I'll level the ground. Of course, I'll replant them all and wait a couple seasons for them to come back up.

One thing that I'd like to point out is how I closed the entrance to the base with logs. I also removed every ramp from the ground level to the hills, so no goblin can enter the base area. Sometimes they spawn outside and die of thirst, which means that, when I open the main gates to get new gnomes, my entire population goes outside to gather all the armor the dead goblins left behind. One of my engineers recently discovered "automatic walls", so I'll do some research on that soon.

But where's the actual fortress where the dwarfs... i mean, gnomes live, you say?

Inside the mountain, of course!

Notice the huge storage area and workshops. Outside, down to the right you can see the Apple Farm. You can also notice the recently built tunnel from the kitchen to the pastures, for easy slaughter. Also, the renewed dinner room (with all Birch furniture and decorative bauxite floors) and renewed dormitory (with birch plank floors and beds, along with cotton pillows) are part of the planned renovations. There's much more to be done, but that's the thing: I didn't even properly started going down yet! Sure, I went down a couple levels, -7 to precise, but now i'm thinking of going further down, to gather some better stones and maybe some gold (to build statues).

This game is all about increasing the base's value, so better merchants (and better enemies) come visit you. We'll see how it goes from now on.

For the record, there's 40 gnomes living with me. 31 have already died, but about 8 of those died before I managed to open the doors so they could come in. Those pesky goblins! I'm having a small food shortage for now, because I hit 1000 food and drink, so I stopped all production while I took care of some things. Then I was missing drink, so I started making drinks out of strawberries.. and then it flipped: now I don't have enough food anymore. But fear not, the farms are already at full production!

I have recently devised a new strategy: My sole Military Squad is composed entirely of Miners. That way, when I go down to mine for goodies, if enemies show up, they're already soldiers! I'll have to figure out the tools vs weapons on each hand before I do anything else, but that seems like a good strategy. I also have enough gnomes that I just leave the Soldiers training most of the time (which I guess makes them better soldiers?).

Here's one new thing that annoys me: I wish I had more granular control on my stocks. For instance: I want all birch wood (logs or planks) to be stored on this stockpile area, while all the other wood (except birch) goes on this adjacent area. I can't, it's either all wood or no wood. Sure, I can select between logs and planks, but no type. Not when storing, anyway. I also wish I could easily replace floors BELOW structures. I had to remove all the beds from the dormitory to change the floors in it.

On another note, I think that injury on my guy that said he "could no longer walk" healed, because he started walking after a couple days on the hospital.

The tile set looks miles better than when I first played it. Really makes me want to play again.

Yep.

Yeah, I definitely want more options with the stockpiles as well. Changing the floors BELOW structures wont ever happen though, as its not quite logical to replace a floor while something is standing on it :P

I'm harvesting so much metal now, I don't have enough Coal to make bars out of the ore!

I converted all my birch logs to planks, so theyre safe... but now I have to kill my pine tree forest.. just so I can make coal.. :D

I tried messing with stockpile priorities, but I can't get something straight. Here's want I want to do:

I'm mining 10 stories below. I want the gnomes to take any ore found on that 10 stories below level to a stockpile on the same level. So I just create a stockpile that has a priority bigger than the main one, at top, right? Since it's closer, they'll just take it there.

Fine. However, how do I make them take all the ore from that 10 storie down stockpile to the main stockpile later? If I change the priority, they'll just take any new found ore upstairs, while leaving everything below.

Edit: As I was writing this message, I came up with the solution: take the below stockpile and REMOVE the gems from the "stockpile options" menu. If you do that, gnomes will come bumrushing down the stairs and take all the gems to the upper level. Once they're done, just re-add the gems to the stockpile and any newfound gem will be taken there (since it has a higher priority).

Let the metal age begin!

Edit2: I have so many gnomes that everything happens instantly at 2x now. It doesn't take forever to do anything, since there's so much people idleing that they'll come do anything I desire quickly. This is pretty cool.. :P

Edit3: Oh shit, I turned my farming back on and the game crashed, so I loaded and forgot to put it back on again! Now I only have 130 of each (Drink and Food). Metal Age must stop! :P

Yeah, now I'm making some progress:

I now have a mechanical wall, which closes with the pulling of a lever. Also, I needed some windmills to power them, so... I also renamed my first Soldier Squad (to "The Menacing Miners") and created a secondary soldier squad ("The Woodcutter Gang"). Woodcutter Gang trains by the main entrance of the base. No Goblin passes unharmed. They also bring me nice trinkets, like Iron Ingots and Iron Equipment. My soldiers are getting pimped.

I need to, somehow, expand. I think i'll just make an entire floor a "dining area".

That's sweet! Haven't yet fiddled with levers :/

Can someone help me?
I have only one real miner left, because one was killed.
I got now gnomads so I put them so they are miners know, but as they dont have any pickaxe they do not work.
I have a pickaxe in a crate, but any of the miners are equipping it.
How the fuck I make them equip the pickaxe?

Cant remember, I'll check it later if no one else answers it. :)

Never played Dwarf Fortress (heard it's very very hardcore) but I loved the SimCities and love the Sims. I'm thinking of getting this but I've got some questions.

How complex is this game? Am I required to monitor the quality of water and happiness, or whatever, of all of my residents? Games that get too complex with mass character and environment management burn me out or give me anxiety (I can handle the sims and simcity well enough). I think more than anything is I love the construction of huge schemes but can't handle the operation to its highest degree after the initiation of the game.

Anyway to go faster than 2x?

Had my 3rd attempt, it was going okay.. until there was a fight. Blood everywhere, and no hospital set up yet.

Played a bit of DF. It was too hard to overlook the graphics but almost hooked me. Bought this and hope that a functional UI will lead to a more fulfilling play experience. First "indy" game I ever bought so the pay what you want model seems to work for attracting customers.

I'd say the level of complexity is comparable to SimCity. You dont need to micromanage individual happiness all that much. You basically only need to build a sleeping room for everyone and take care of having enough food and booze. Thats all you really need to do. I never felt cumbered by the demands of the population.

Give it a shot!

Thanks for giving us the heads-up on this deal. I went in on it as well. I also purchased Space Chem based off of your recommendation, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Well, I'd say you should try a persons recommendation first before jumping on another recommendation :p Both could be totally not your taste.

But hey, if you want other ones:
Frozen Synapse
FTL

Both highly (and universally) recommended. There are quite a few more games I'd recommend based on specific taste, but ah well. Enjoy SpaceChem and Gnomoria. There is already a lot to love there :)

If you got any questions about any game, feel free to ask.
