Halo 3 trailer on xbox live now.

The music is absolutely rousing, and one thing that I love about it is that it's not just a repeat of past music. The signiture monks are not even there. Similar to how Halo 2 introduced new themes to the overal mix, while subtly referencing the originals. Goddamn Marty is amazing.

I'm just getting around to reading the article on bungie.net. It's hilarious. Highlights:

Bungie Shocks World with Surprise Game Announcement

Nobody saw it coming. Halo 3! Who knew? For the last year or two, people have speculated about what our next project was and surprisingly, in all that time, not a single person guessed that it would be Halo 3. Not one.

We declare it the best kept secret ever.

Seriously though, it's been a chore biting our tongues on this one. Call it a combination of studio secrecy, corporate secrecy, Bill Gates already announcing it four times and, you know, whatever.

Grim stuff, but then things were grim at the end of Halo 2 when we left the Chief and the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance. A cliffhanger about which we received over twenty emails... cough.

I wake up to find people saying Halo 3 not looking next-gen, despite it basically taking a large, wet dump on any and everything we've seen...

On top of that, they're putting down the most awe-inspiring trailer music since... ever...

How the hell people can still talk about MGS4 and like compared to this:

is beyond comprehension...

You guys are delusional...

Don't you DARE make this into a comparison thread.

Does Halo 3 look good? Yes, it looks fucking amazing. Could we please just leave it at that?

That is the only pic that looks totally unreal.

Don't get me wrong, the game looks fantastic, but is clearly realtime... I don't think anyone could confuse it for CGI, for example.

(You also won't be seeing Master Chief's face when you play, zoomed in 1000x)

I'd say FXIII and Lair (if realtime) both look better.

What gets me about the footage is the scale. In the Gamespot article Bungie mentions that the crater is three miles accross. , and you can see all the way accross. Toss in dozens of Covenant ships, dust, smoke and lighting effects and the whole thing just boggles my mind. It's a teaser, and it sure as hell teased.

It has impact. On Bungie.net they mention several times that the game is playable, with AI, multi-player and other elements up and running, but they're just not showing it yet. I can't freaking wait.

By the way if you go over to B3D its seems that the Lair video maynot be quite as clear cut as people think?

I'm not, or atleast I'm trying not too... it was just brought up, so I just wanted to shut that down with proof - but you're right, let's keep it on H3 only...

I hope somebody recorded the live demonstration of the teaser level that Gamespot was talking about - that should be hot...

There's so many fucking experts about Halo 2 and it's engines that apprently never had the game near his person since the bonus disc explains the downgrade from trailer letter by letter: The E3 demo was coded using all of 128MB RAM of the devkit by mistake. Then later they realised that they have to make the game work on 64MB RAM in the consoles in the homes and said OOPS! :lol That caused major delays too. One of the biggest OOPS in game development history.

oh and for attention to detail freaks

when the shockwave from the center blasts past the covenant cruiser, the ship starts to shift on an angle... -really- cool.

something i noticed which i'm surprised they added because you can barely see it is when all the little hatch covers are raising you can see sand spilling off of them

Where was this? I don't remember it from the DVD or elsewhere...?

Do a frame-by-frame as the MC lowers his gun and watch the animation on the hand he plants the gun into. Astounding attention to detail. Looks perfectly real. The details are great.

That's a joke, right? There's no way in hell they would "accidentally" program for the devkit ram. Not a chance. If they said that, that's the biggest lie I've ever heard from a gaming company. And I've watched Sony press conferences before.

Not saying anything about Halo 3 from that, though. The trailer looked good. The only bit that really impressed me was the helmet shader though. That was some crisp stuff right there.

Whoa! Didn't notice those details! Very cool.

My favorite bit, honestly, was the rusty sign blowing in the wind at the very beginning. THAT was fucking next-gen.

If you're not watching this trailer on an exorbitantly large screen in Hi-Def, you're not getting it.

Don't forget that these are the guys that put a working speedometer in every Warthog - and this was for way back in Halo 1...

Bungie is just exceptional when it comes to details like that... nothing is too small for them to add... and I for one appreciate it greatly...

And yeah, I noticed the rusty sign flapping in the wind on the first watch... :)

And hell yeah, watching this in hi-def is the only way to watch this - watched it like 30 times by now I think!

I really hope bungie learned their lesson promising graphics they cant deliver, it sure looks like they did, when the scene opened to the desert i picked up the controller expecting to start playing (my brain kicked in second later), it looks like a game, after watching hours of target renders it really sticks out. If its not being rendered real time on 360 ill be supprised.

I still remember my first reaction after seeing the Halo 2 trailer and then actually playing Halo 2.

One was good, one was bad. Hmmmm...

I'm just making this post for the HALO lovers/haters that are asking for something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. What new step can be made with this franchsie? It's going to be a FPS. For those calling for a game with the same impact as HALO:CE had on unsuspecting gamers so many years ago, what do you want?

I've been with HALO since day 01 and the franchise hasn't had such an impact on me as it had on that first day, in my friends basement, stoned as hell, with Covenant dropships landing all over this forested landscape surrounding us. Honestly, how far can you progress with this gameplay ideal?

I've heard rumors of some sort of MMOFPS wide-open-world thing, does anyone think that will actually work for this title? Bungie seems to be pretty dedicated to their storyline - someting that'd be hard to express in a "free-form" online sort of title. Ideas?

That trailer looks hot but I'll reserve judgement until I have the actual game in my hand after what happend with Halo 2. How the hell did the Covenant conquer Earth after what happend to them in Halo 2?

I dont think theyve really conquerd Earth, I think theyre just try to fight their way to a Halo thats in the Earth and activate it.

I can't stop watching the trailer, it almost brings a tear to my eye. I'm a huge Halo fan, but I haven't got this excited about a game since my World of WarCraft addiction began. God I can't wait to learn more.

Can you believe I only just now got to watch this darn teaser trailer? I was waiting to see it with the 5.1 sound cranked up on my projection TV.
OMG, the music and sound effects are simply perfect. I'm not really a Halo fan, but damn I've watched this trailer 5 times already and still get goosebumps when the music starts picking up and during the bungie logo. Marty O'Donnell is so good, wow.

Can't wait for the first Halo 3 cover story...That divulges information and interviews Bungie team members. EGM had several Halo 2 exclusive issues.

Oh no you didn't!

Here is the text of one of the Cortana letters I mentioned earlier... didn't know about the "I know how the world ends" part at the end of the trailer which makes the connection even clearer.

I have walked the edge of the Abyss.
I have governed the unwilling.
I have witnessed countless empires break before me.
I have seen the most courageous soldiers fall away in fear.
[I was there with the Angel at the tomb]
I have seen your future.
And I have learned.

There will be no more Sadness. No more Anger. No more Envy.

I HAVE WON.

Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:
THIS is the way the world ends.

Woho! The Assault Rifle from Halo:CE makes a comeback.

Actually, it is slightly different. Not sure if they simply updated the model, or if we're going to see a retooling of the weapon set. The major difference is the elongated barrel, making it appear to be a cross between the AR and the BR.

I wasn't really impressed with the trailer until near the end, shortly before the music makes a dramatic pause and Cortana says "This is the way the world ends". Superb timing. Marty knows his stuff.

I dunno, they seemed pretty set on making a wide-open team-based multiplayer game with the original version, which was scrapped once Microsoft bought them up and rushed them to churn out what was the final product, including the ultimately tedious level design.

I don't really blame Bungie for that, but what really pissed me off was when they promised all sorts of cool shit for Halo 2 like real-time lighting/shadowing that would play a part in indoor combat, destructive environments, much larger-scale battles, deeper AI and team-based combat, etc........and instead we got Halo 1.5. I'm just used to Bungie letting me down with the Halo games, and I'm not going to create any expectations until the game is well into development.

Rampancy for the win!

Speaking of Mombasa and easter eggs, what would that city at the far end of the artifact be, you say? That is a bunch of skyscrapers beyond the Covenant fleet, if my eyeglasses are worth their shock and awe price. (I guess it's old Mombasa, considering the what happened at the end of the New Mombasa level, but that's obviously conjecture based on absolutely nothing).

Love the trailer, though was never able yesterday to get it to download fully through Live. Eh, I wanted to slap it onto the PDA anyway.

Try again later. The only one of the high-demand trailers I later got lucky with on Live was Forza 2. Slick trailer for building the enthusiasm for the game, regardless of it not being a gameplay trailer.

-The trailer is 100% real time
-Very early graphics work (yet)
-Weather effects (volumetric fog, sunrays) and dust
-Surprisingly high texture detail
-Real time reflections on MC's helmet, you can see the rifle firing and even the mounted scope
-Very precise lighting, maybe the best part of the demo

That's pretty much all, the first page is all fluff about the trailer.
