Hannibal |OT| Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter – Thursdays 10/9c

Why would you say that?

His decision to pull that episode completely derailed the momentum of building this world and any kind of fanbase. People who didn't follow the show were confused by the omission and demotivated to continue watching, and people who do follow the show refused to skip an episode. New shows can be very fragile and to offset that momentum in such a way might prove to be fatal.

The reasoning was not sound, either. If you set out to make a show about murder and cannibalism and then drop your cargo at the first sign of an imperial cruiser, you're doomed to failure from the start.

Agreed. It probably won't kill the show imo, but it was a bad move that really killed it's momentum. As evidenced by this thread, it was all positive until that decision and half the talk has been about it since.

I know this is just a small cross-segment, but water cooler talk in the office has followed a similar trajectory.

This is ridiculous. I doubt pulling the episode had any effect whatsoever on its broadcast audience. Everything was down last week due to the NFL draft.

Jesus fucking christ, internet fans of television think they have way more influence than they do. Even for a lowly rated show like this most people who are watching will never read a single article about the show. I doubt the majority of the audience even had any idea that an episode was skipped.

If this show ends up being canceled the preemption will have nothing to do with it, and anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

I watched episode 4 and it wasn't particuarly graphic at all, much ado about nothing.

Also;

Watched the full 4 episode but didn't get one thing. Who was the burned kid on the second house killing? He shot his mom 2 times and killed himself?

I wanna buy Episode 4 and play it on my TV (on my PS3).

How... do I do this. I've never actually bought a television program and streamed it digitally. I am in Canada.
Do you have Amazon Instant up in Canada? They have the episode in their US store and there's a PS3 app in the US PS Store, maybe it's the same in Canada...

If you don't have Amazon Instant in Canada, I guess you could try purchasing the episode on the US website and then watching it on your PS3 (I have no idea if this will work but the comments on that site make it seem like it does).

Very glad the "banned" episode is now readily available, even if it is the weakest of the five episodes to-date.

I'm so looking forward to this show getting to the events of the novel Red Dragon. If the show maintains its current quality, it'll easily eclipse both film adaptations.

Bought it on amazon to support the show.

That was probably an intention of their actions, but ya know what... if the ratings aren't getting across that people enjoy this well written and visually dazzling show then perhaps 3 bucks will.

fucking hell

The structure of the show (so far) has completely allowed for that episode's omission. It sucks ass, but it was not a dramatically effective interuption.

I think the amount of people who didn't watch last week's episode because of the omission of 104 is vastly overstated. I think there are other reasons why it might not have been as highly rated (depressed lead in, the week of the Boston Bombing), but I don't think it's because 104 was skipped and people were confused. Like it or not, that's still a minority in the TV viewing audience.

Glad I checked the thread since I wouldn't have guessed they had already put episode 4 up for purchase.

Will catch up tomorrow!

I don't think we Amazon Instant. I was looking in the PSN store, but I got nothing for Canada. But I might give the second option a try, thanks.

Got caught up. Absolutely love this show. The amazing visuals of the pilot appear to be carrying over quite well, to following episodes and the performances are great. I particularly like the toll of events weighing heavy on Will or the surprisingly restrained performance from Mads Mikkelsen. Not to say I've ever had a problem with Mikkelsen, i just wasn't expecting the character of Hannibal to be as nuanced in this, as it is.

I really hope this one doesn't get cancelled. Keeping in mind i'm the UK, what all can i do to help prevent this from happening?

This is probably cliche at this point but this show makes me hungry. So much food porn. I don't even care how much of it is actually people.

:/

Thankfully, I held out on watching episode 5 until I could watch episode 4, so I was able to watch them both back to back. Episode 4 was the weakest episode so far - Molly Shannon barely made an impression, (though the stuff with the kids killing their families was pretty messed up) and I didn't really find any of the stuff with Hannibal/Abigail/Will to be particularly compelling. Episode 5 was better though, with a more compelling case of the week, more emotionally gripping character moments, and more visually arresting shots - WTF @ those skinned "angels"?! Disturbing and disgusting and yet so artistic.

Anyway, I didn't like 4 and 5 as much as the first three, but it's still a pretty good show and it would be a shame if it were cancelled. I'm glad that it's apparently still looking good for renewal, but those ratings are a bit worrisome. Hopefully the ratings will go up again this week.

I watched the korean airing of the episode. It absolutely felt as if scenes were cut and information was missing throughout the episode. There were misplaced and downright jarring fade-to-blacks here and there, and some scenes had characters talk about stuff that viewers were ignorant about but maybe shouldn't have been.

Either this episode is missing some parts or it's been worked on by incompetents. In any case, it was by far the weakest of the series so far, and simply bad.

Just out of curiosity, now that episode 4 is available officially, does anyone know if the leaked version AuthenticM was talking about was indeed heavily edited?

Watched the full episode 4 last night. Random thoughts incoming. It was amazing. Probably my favorite one yet. The music is so damn ominous. Hannibal's breakfast looked incredible, but I couldn't understand what he said it was called. Anyone? Molly Shannon looking old, but good. Didn't expect the tea part. Caroline Dhavernas is beautiful. This show kind of feels like a long dream, very surreal.

Good stuff all around.

decided to watch the show at work yesterday and i'm up to ep 4. so far it's pretty great but the young girl sucks as an actor. hannibal is totes going to eat the tabloid lady so we can cheer for him murdering and then feel conflicted and think about what that means. some how i've managed to avoid silence of the lambs and red dragon, so the characters nuances and methods are new to me. although, i wish they weren't so obvious with hannibal being involved and ~bad~, instead playing with our knowledge of the character and wondering if it is him. having us wonder when murder and cannibalism actually entered his life instead of getting those weird moments where people put him in a roleplay situation that is actually accurate as to what part he played in the crime.

but it's pretty damn good for basic tv drama

Whaaaaaat? Abigail is one of the best parts of the show!

This was one of the most exciting episodes for me because it was the first time that Hannibal was going to prepare/cook a human and feed him to Jack.

This line, its context and its implications make me smile.

I think it's HDCP, my DVR client software on my PC works the same way. Whenever I try to take a screencap of something it just spits out a black image. : /

This used to occur with video players that use overlay. When you capture you grab the overlay itself, not the image projected onto the overlay. Can't say that's the case for iTunes though, I don't use it.
