There is a difference between child porn and depicting underage sex. How would they ever make a movie about teen pregnancy? Or Lolita? Or even movies about the bible? How old was Juno supposed to be?

I understand that, but when you're using underage actors, different rules apply. That's all I was really talking about

I really like the Malazan books, but I'm baffled as to why anyone would consider Erikson a good writer, let alone one better than Martin. Erikson has his moments of greatness, and definitely improves with later books, but in general his writing style is incredibly bloated, unnecessarily obfuscatory, repetitive, and sometimes just plain boring.

To be fair, the exact same thing can be said of Tolkien's LOTR books.

Eriksen's greatness lies in his ability to weave several threads within one book and bring them all to one fantastic climax by the end of the book. What's even better is that each individual book weaves its own giant thread that eventually will come together for the series' ultimate climax.

Yes, his characterizations are poor at times (especially in the early books) but he improves a lot in the later books (Karsa Orlong, Tehol Beddict, Bugg, etc).

I've started reading A Game of Thrones recently. I'm a very casual reader (read maybe an hour a day) so I'm about halfway through the book, but I'm loving it so far.

Keep going! There are parts of A Storm of Swords that will make you shit your pants with the tension and excitement.

I am hoping to finish A Game Of Thrones tonight, have just over a hundred pages to go. Took me forever to get past the first hundred pages of the book, but once I did I haven't been able to put it down since.

...but when you get to A Feast for Crows you'll think "is it really worth reading this shit to finish the series"? Also keeping in mind that the guy takes forever to write a book and may croke before he finishes this bloody series.

That said, I really want HBO to make this series...particularly after they canned plans for the Preacher series and the one set in the crusades.

I check his blog every other day. I suppose this is cool news, but if he can give an update on this project (which by his admission won't see the light of day for a long time, if ever) why not update the progress of ADWD. Has he started writing since coming back from worldcon? Did the vacation leave him more rested/inspired than before? etc. smh

I've been kinda avoiding re-reading the books lately. I'm currently re-reading SoS for the first time but I stopped like a month ago. Partly because I'd prefer to re-read it after I know when ADWD comes out, and partly because I don't want to re-read That Part again :(

HBO orders fantasy pilot 'Thrones'

HBO has given a pilot order to fantasy project "Game of Thrones."

The program is based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling series of novels "A Song of Fire & Ice" and executive produced by David Benioff ("Troy") and D.B. Weiss ("Halo"). The title “Game of Thrones” is from the first novel in the series.

If greenlit, “Thrones” would represent the rarest of TV genres: a full-fledged fantasy series.

Though broadcasters have embraced sci-fi-tinged shows in recent years following the success of ABC’s “Lost” and NBC’s “Heroes,” and supernatural themes have been given a spin by CW’s “Supernatural” and HBO’s own “True Blood,” high fantasy is nearly nonexistent in primetime TV history -- and “Thrones” is an unabashed member of the genre. The books have swords, dragons, magic, the works.

“Fantasy is the most successful genre in terms of feature films given the incredible popularity of ‘Lord of the Rings’ and Harry Potter movies,” Benioff said. “High fantasy has never been done on TV before and if anybody can do it, it’s HBO. They’ve taken tired genres and reinvented them -- mobsters in ‘The Sopranos’ and Westerns with ‘Deadwood.’”

The cost of producing a fantasy series is usually a big factor that deters networks. The producers note “Thrones” is written as a character drama and major battles often take place off stage.

“It’s not a story with a million orcs charging across the plains,” Weiss said. “The most expensive effects are creature effects and there’s not much of that.”

Martin plans seven books in the series. The producers intend for each season to span one novel.

But before the series can get on the air, the producers first have to slay a more formidable threat than any dragon: pilot competitors. HBO has 10 other pilots in contention for series orders. Though the network declines to project how many shows will receive an order since HBO doesn’t need to fill a specific number of time-periods like broadcasters, at least six are expected to get a pickup.

Also, the success of “True Blood” may work in “Thrones'” favor. HBO has always sought to defy any sort of specific genre branding for their network, emphasizing that each project is judged on its own merits. Yet given how the vampire drama continues to gain viewers, and how Showtime’s swords-and-monarchy historical drama “The Tudors” has performed strongly, it’s not unreasonable to believe the network may see “Thrones” as a good fit.

Previous fantasy titles on TV are few and far between. ABC’s “Pushing Daisies” might qualify as a member of the genre, though its fantastical elements are wrapped in a modern day crime procedural. ABC Family’s “Kyle XY” could fit. Some would consider the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fantasy, though supernatural drama is probably a more appropriate term. Former syndicated program “Xena Warrior Princess,” however, is firmly in the genre. NBC’s upcoming “Kings” also qualifies.

Some thoughts: I suspect a fair number of viewers are going to love this idea -- a high fantasy series with a grown-up budget and no content restrictions? Not even the hugely popular movie franchises cited by the producers have offered such a prospect, because no studio greenlights a fantasy budget without the promise of a PG-13 rating. Combined with "True Blood," this also suggests an interesting, AintItCoolNews-targeted direction for the network. Less edgy-PBS, more R-rated Comic Con.

I can't wait to hear about casting. Those decisions will completely make or break this project, as it's so character-oriented.

Looking forward to it, though! I have faith in HBO! :D

Well, Nice update with info on the pilot being picked up. So it has a shot which could be awesome.

But to be frank, I would much rather have Martin stop milking this shit already and just put out the next book. Just in case this is a success...We don't get them caught up to the books before they are finished. And if its a success also, give him another reason to keep milking it.

My exact reaction. Kudos to Cornballer for making a bump that doesn't disappoint in the sack.

Yeah, the chances of Martin finishing the 7th book before the show catches up (assuming the show is picked up at all) are slim to none. Let's say the first season airs in 2009 hypothetically, so he would have approximately 6 years to finish books 6 and 7, and that's if A Dance With Dragons is even close to completion...

You can do it, George!

That's assuming 1 year per season, which could be a little too optimistic for a series like this. But who knows?

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Just you wait and see. I can easily see something along the lines of "blah blah blah I have to now adapt it for TV blah blah, HBO this, blah blah, ADWD due out 2012.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
I think that AFfC cant be truly judged without the outlying areas being explored. Feast was the book most tightly focused on an single area, and once combined with Dance, will be a lot more satisfying. Its mostly seem to be that people miss characters that are easy to like (though not necessarily any more intriguing than those in Feast) and because the world feels more constricted.

Also most people go oh shit at the Red Wedding, but I went oh shit at seeing just how scheming Littlefinger is (and we probably still dont know the half of it). Easily one of the best characters in the series, charming yet such a bastard
