HP Discontinues webOS (Widespread $100 TouchPad sales)

What a hilarious mess. No one at these stores has any direction or knows what's going on. Some Staples selling them, some not. Walmart hit and miss. Best Buy pulling them. It's like a big shipment of Cabbage Patch kids in 1984...

...ahem...got my two already.....

No success with Best Buy. The guy told me i "wouldn't want one anyway" and called it a "giant discontinued paperweight with no apps" Lol

I may get someone in the US to get one from Staples for me next week.

As for RFD, someone who owns a store should post a fake deal on RFD, with a "password", and then when people come into the store and say the password, they should beat the RFDers with potatoes in socks.

Sounds like the TouchPad alright...

(I still want one of course!)

My best buy is selling them, but no price drop. They're all going back to HP.

Is this OOS everywhere online then?

2? You don't need 2. I on the other hand would love just one...

Staples online store is now 99 dollars. Of course completely out of stock online and in my city. So is Futureshop.

So I went to Staples at 8:30. There are 3 other people waiting. Manager comes out , tells every body that they are sold out. Advises to try the Source down the way.
Ok.

Source manager shows up at 9. Sold out.
On the way back by Staples, the asshole manager has now sold 6 units to people that came after us, claiming we weren't asking if he had any of the 32GB units.

I tell the manager he's a lying jerk and go home angry.

Also hp's Canadian website was showing $99 but checkout was $399. Damn

Earlier today it said out of stock on staples too, so I hit add 16 GB- it said unavailable... Ok... Then I hit add 32... Then checkout!!!

I seriously think the order may be cancelled but I now have hope!!

Me: I'm trying to buy a Touchpad

Best Buy: No more Touchpad

Me: No more touchpads, or are you just out of touchpads?

Didn't see any at staples either, oh well. That's enough work for something I didn't really need.

Well Staples is not accepting coupon nor the 99 or 150 dollars for the tablet at all. According to them they have received a memo from corporate to not to accept them for now. Regardless I got the 32 GB version from my local walmart as it was the only 2 left.

The Staples manager probably sold them to friends.

"Come by a little after we open. I'll make sure we have some."

As for the HP.ca website, I'm refreshing it in unending frustration.

Just got back from an Office Depot. I think a bunch of people were calling and asking if they had any of the HP tablets left. WebOS' marketshare is skyrocketing.

This fire sale could end being a smart move for HP.

But that's assuming people will want to buy them at regular price again. ;)

Mmm, kernel is pretty much Android-compatible. I'm sure we'll see a port very soon.

99$ 1.2ghz dual core Android tablet with a gig of RAM? Yes, please.

Yeah, but the lying pisses me off. Especially trying to turn it around on us.

Anyway , just another person I hope dies in a fire.

can someone make an HP touchpad owners thread?

i'm sure many people have one on gaf now and i would personally love it as a source of information for future updates.

You gotta wonder how this is going to play out...so many people will have it now, even if it's not offically HP, someone is going to support this I think.

So after checking around, none of the stores in my area are dropping the price, and all but walmart said that their remaining stock was going back to HP. So now it looks like all I can do is wait.

no, it’s dead.

there’s no room for delusions in this thread.

Just from playing around with it so far:

Having flash is really, really nice. It drags sometimes, but it's a hell of a lot better than a page dotted with ? boxes everywhere.

Man, I totally dig typing on this. All essential keys are present, and you don't have to dig through submenus for often-use punctuation marks, etc. There's a free app called Typewriter which uses Markdown for rich text.

I'm genuinely impressed with the UI. The word "intuitive" is way overused, but it really is. I'm swiping all over the place. The card system of layering your open apps on top of each other like a poker hand you flick through is awesome. It isn't nearly as bad as the reviews suggested - but then again, I did the patch/update, and it may have been a mess before. I wish Jobs would steal some of these ideas.

It's a bummer that the app catalog will never get fleshed out with apps by some of the big players like Netflix, but there is a decent amount of stuff out there already.
I don't even really want to hack it to Android, I'm finding WebOS so easy to use.

My screen has some light bleed in one corner, noticeable on the black boot screen but nowhere else (so far). Again, suspect build quality on these things, not a lot of polish. I was thinking about buying a case, but I'm not spending 1/4 of what I paid for the tablet on one. I have an old netbook sleeve, that'll do.

The speakers sound great, full and rich.

All in all, I'm very happy with it for $99. It's got a lot of nice features, and absolutely blows away any of those busted-ass Android 2.2/3 craptablets like Pandigital or Cruz. I can read my comics and ebooks on it, I can type out notes and research, and I can listen to internet radio while I am doing it. That's 90% of what I did on the iPad, so good enough for now.

The biggest problem, I think, was HP launching this thing at iPad prices with a limited app store. They should've launched it in the $350 price range, made some deals for expected apps like Netflix/Hulu/etc. to come pre-installed - and most of all, optimized the fucking OS before they shipped it. With the lack of hardware polish (seriously, the plastic back looks like a giant remote control), the buggy launch UI, and a dearth of apps, it is almost as if HP threw this thing out the door as quickly as possible knowing they were gonna shut it all down in a couple of months and take the write off.

I just got back from my almost 4 hour adventure....

I got a 32gb touchpad for $149

Walmart by now I am sad to say is more then likely sold out. When I got mine they were people coming in the back to electronics the truck loads and yes I am serious.

Luckily I knew the manager and he held it for me.

DAMNIT! Why the hell did I have to go to sleep!?

What are the chances some places will still be selling these tomorrow? The liquidation won't be THAT popular, right?

Your chances are already near 0.

Wrong. I had no idea how popular this would be. I just went over to my local Hhgregg and the sales manager said they had lines of people waiting and they blew through 300 of them.

Needless to say I have no Touchpad and there's no left in my city and that makes me super sad.

zzz My local walmart has some in stock. Online it's 149 out of stock but the guy at walmart says it's 400+ at the store and they won't match the price of the site. :(

What's RFD?

Really wishing I had the money to spare for a couple of these for my girlfriend and I, too bad this couldn't happen a few weeks from now :(

I'm a bit behind the curve, what would be the benefit of getting a touchpad now, is someone looking for a way to put Honeycomb on it and make it an Android tablet?
I want to buy one for a family member to use for school (I will, of course, get to play around with it :D).

That plus I'm sure there will be plenty of homebrew content, or at least I hope so.

I do have a question. How the hell did everyone find out about this? I mean they are truckloads of people going to walmart and best buy just for the touch pad.

Yeah this is what I want to know. I guess it was posted on Slick Deals, but I found out about this super late at night. It wasn't like it was widely known about previously. I guess there's more people up at 2 AM on the internet than I realize....
