Do these people have assets that they can leave to you? I mean, you are gonna take care of their child. At least have them leave you their savings, equity on their home, retirement funds, something.

This was the first thing I thought after reading the situation.


To be blunt about it: "How much?" is the question that needs to be answered. Obviously you would not be expected to take the financial burden.
