I want to play Phoenix Wright 5 soooo bad........

But the thing is I only have finished the first game, and I'm currently on the last case of AA2. I could maybe power-through AA3, but I want to move to A5 so bad. I guess those gorgeous 3D models spoiled me.

Would you guys recommend to be patient and play the trilogy first, or can I just wrap-up AA2 and immediately move to AA5? If it is a series that needs to be played in order and all stories are connected, then I guess I have no other choice. But if there are only some small references to past games in AA5, then I would love to play that ASAP.

What do you say GAF?
 
AA3 is the best game in the series, so yeah, I would not skip that. AA4 is probably the weakest of the series, but it introduces a lot of the characters you'll see in AA5 so it's kind of a must play for that.
 
I am also wondering if playing the previous games is important. (I've only played the first)
I just got an XL not long ago and really want to play this new one.
 
Finish the damn games. Why rush it? They're all excellent. Don't forget Apollo Justice cuz it sorta adds to the character in AA5.

AA5 is a real love letter to longtime fans with it's callbacks and musical remixes. Skipping the original games is doing YOU a disservice.
 
The series is one of them that should be played in order.

The first three all connect to each other with cast and such. Its much a trilogy.

The 4th one and 5th one have stronger links to each other story wise.
 
I will agree and say that you would greatly regret skipping AA3. It is easily among the best in the series (my favourite alongside AA5)
 
Take your time and don't burn out on these games. Powering through T&T is definitely not recommended. The game is too good for that.
You should also play Apollo Justice. It's by far the weakest game in the main series, but it's arguably more important for DD than T&T.
 
Having played them all, the one you really, really can't afford to skip, unfortunately, is AA4.

You might actually get away with skipping AA3, as there are very few callbacks to it in AA5. However as with any sequel, if you read the sequel first and go back, when a character is in danger you'll say 'I know this person survives this impossible danger, because they're still alive in the next one'.

That's about the only way skipping AA3 would hurt you. If you skip AA4, however, the entire structure of the law firm and the relationships of the main characters will be lost on you.

So if you must skip, skip AA3 and play AA4. Just know that AA3 is 5 times as good as AA4, so my advice is to play them all in order, while taking a break of a couple of days between games, as they will burn you out otherwise.
 
You should at least play Apollo Justice. While it is a series that usually rewards you when you play the previous entries, it's not necessarily the case with Dual Destinies when it comes to the story.

If you finish PW1 and AJ you should be fine.
 
Not playing all the PW games up to 5 must be considered as a gaming crime.
And 3 is in my opinion a masterpiece. So no, don't skip any.

I am now playing no wachting a walkthrough of Dual Destinies and it seems a return to former glory. I am now at case 3 and it is really, really good. Yeah I've downloaded a walkthrough off youtube and watching on my Vita, which is very odd but feels good somehow.

Like everyone else has said, do yourself a favor and keep playing in order. It's would be like skipping ahead of a tv show and wondering who all these important characters are, and wondering if something was supposed to be a call back joke or reference.

After you plough through the AA backlog, play Ghost Trick on DS/iOS while you're at it. It's another great game by Shu Takumi.

Nope. In regards to AA5, Apollo Justice is probably the most "important."

All of the games are fantastic, so I don't see the point in wanting to skip immediately to AA5. Just play them in order and you'll feel better knowing you're not missing any cool references or story tidbits when you get to it.

I already have Ghost Trick (full game) downloaded for iOS. Very looking forward to that one too.

I can see why you would think that, as it's the only 'non Phoenix' game, and AA5 is a Phoenix game, but it introduces the Apollo character, and AA5 assumes you know him and what he's been through, and he's a main attorney again.

I wouldn't skip any of them. Going to finish last case of AA3 today and move on to AA4, then AAI, and then last but not least AA5.

AA2 last case is god like, by the way...

I wouldn't say that AA4 is important because of Apollo, but because of Phoenix. AA4 is much more about Phoenix Wright than it is Apollo Justice.
 
As a person who played all the Phoenix Wright games (bar 5) over the course of a few months earlier this year...

I don't get the dislike for Apollo Justice. I didn't feel as though there was a quality dropoff when I played it after T&T.

What are actually the best Dual Destinies cases? I found case 1 to be a very good 'case 1'. And I didn't mind case 2 either although it dragged a bit. Case 3 looks like something special.

Here. Let me try to temper your anxiety a bit: AA5's voice acting is AWFUL. It is--by a longshot--the absolute worst in the series in that regard. Phoenix and Apollo's (and
Klavier's
. Holy damn does that new voice suck) new voices will make you want to throw up. The anime cutscenes are also trash.

AA3, on the other hand, is ridiculously good. Ridiculously. I still think about its music all the time.
 
Where's the rush? Take your time with one of the best series in gaming. I'm sure a lot of gaffer would love to replay the series for their first time again. AA3 is amazing and one of the best games I've played.
 
Some of the best callbacks by the Judge directly references a bunch of moments in the older games. It's great so don't skip!

I think the dislike for it mostly comes from the new cast and what they did to Phoenix. I liked both AA4 and AAI, myself.

I think the anime cutscenes are just fine, with the exception of a particular one in case 3. They're especially awesome in case 2.5. Though, yeah, they're brought down by the bad VA.
 
The game isn't going anywhere since it's on the eshop. I just bought the 3rd and 4th games yesterday to prepare for the new one too.
 
Don't you dare skip any. Play them in order. You'll be playing better entries than AA5 on your way to it, anyway. The only one you can skip is AAI, I guess, but get to it later.
 
How is the HD version of the original trilogy regarded?
I've read something about missing animation.

It looks pretty and I would love them on my Vita...

Yeah, no. It's definitely one of the weaker ones, but its story is directly tied to AA5's.

It's the VA, for sure, but it also feels like they just phoned in the artwork and character design. Athena, in particular, looks nothing like her in-game character model, which looks way the hell better.

Heh. I found it an interesting twist and new direction in the story. Yeah, I suppose the big change in dynamics and cast might throw people off. Personally I found myself liking Apollo more than Phoenix, lol.
 
I agree that AA4 was the weakest in series BUT AA5 is a direct sequel to it. I mean, there's a character in AA5 that will boggle people's minds if you skipped AA4. Just a warning for OP.
 
In a perfect world, Capcom would actually care and we'd get remastered versions of 1 through 4 on the 3DS with GS5 style graphics in a physical release with a selection of "best" tracks on a CD and I would happily pay $80 for it.

That's because you're not missing any gameplay, AA5, like AAI, runs on autopilot. :P Very disappointing in that regard, but still a decent AA story and I wouldn't recommend skipping any of the games.

Been a long while since I played the earlier games, might be time for a second playthrough of all of them.

What an odd statement to say considering AA5 is the first in the series to use experienced voice talent instead of random Capcom employees.
 
I would play them all in order! They are some of the best games ever so there is no need to rush through them. Enjoy them and get to Dual Destinies when you can.

Well, besides yells, there really hasn't been any voice acting the games before, no? I'm only going onto the second case in AA5, but the voice acting so far as been jarring and feels out of place.

That makes it even sadder, considering how much better the random Capcom employees are.

Voices aside, I also don't really like Phoenix's characterization in AA5 (though I'm not all the way through yet, so I might change my opinion).

I think most people would agree that the Capcom employees sounded better. Maybe they wouldn't have for prolonged dialogue, but the original "Objection!" sound clips surpass the newer ones for sure.

Thankfully, the VO is only in some key scenes. I didn't like them either.

Case 5,4,1 and the DLC case were amazing. 3 was good, 2 was too convoluted and confusing.

Also, you should totally buy the game after you watch it so we get more AAs int he future :P

You can just read a wiki summary for the characters no need to suffer through AA4 just to know the characters.
