Edit: Oops quoted the wrong guy.

Find a large cardboard box. Large enough for the dog to be laid out flat. Wrap the dog in a towel and place the dog in the box. Put the box in the garage if there is one. If there is no garage put the box in a cool place in the basement. If there is no basement put it in a utility room or whatever. Somewhere cool.

2nd edit. Didn't realize they are away for two weeks. Follow the instructions above until you get new instructions from the owners. Tell the owners as soon as possible.

May I have a cookie?
Best pineapple I've ever had in my life. Don't know if I'll be able to back to store bought. Store bought pineapples taste good but they are as close to jelly as you can get, they don't have much meat to it. This pineapple was meaty and juicy. My hands were drenched after eating a couple slices.

He was making a very sarcastic post against you, I don't think you should have answered in this manner...

It's a pretty common thing to do in rural areas, which this apparently is. The OP said that those were the instructions he was given. Supervising the dog getting hit by a car probably wouldn't have helped the OP's situation much
it is also, as someone who grew up in the boonies, incredibly dumb. I've seen too many loose dogs just galloping around by remote freeways to ever thing this is a good idea.

When dogs are let free, they get hit by cars. Nobody should be surprised by this. I'd say it's the fault of the owner, the neighbor, and you. Dog had no chance.

And done. It's all involved's fault really, you should've been there. It's a shitty situation but you have to accept some responsibility for this as the dogs wouldn't have been in that situation if you were there actually watching them properly.

OK seriously though, was that "do I throw the dog in the garbage", being serious or? I don't think you've answered this yet.

He did answer it. That's what the neighbor was going to do with the dog before he intervened, and that is what the owners did with their previous dog. It's not as crazy as everyone is making it out to be -- here is what the NYC ASPCA suggests as a free option if you can't bury your pet:

Fee-Free Options

The New York City Department of Sanitation will pick up animal remains that are left curbside. This service is free of charge, but there are specific rules that must be followed:

On your neighborhood's regular trash pickup day, place the animal in a heavy-duty, black plastic bag and put it in your usual collection spot. Tape a note to the bag stating "deceased animal inside."

That would be so fucked up to do to a faithful friend. :lol

What to do with the body of your dead pet:

- check if you're allowed to bury them on your private property
-> usually allowed for animals under a certain size
-> has to be a bit away from the property of your neighbors and usually it should be a bit deeper than the 2 feet OP dug up.
-> not near any water source

- you can always bury in on a pet cemetery, they should also offer pet cremation if you don't want to spend so much money.

- you can call the local dead animal removal service. Like with the animals you leave at your veterinarian, they will often make use of the dead animals and turn them into products after sterilization.
mhh gummy bears ;D

- ...and I'm pretty sure you can put them in the (bio-bin) trash to be picked up soon.

seriously, dogs hate the taste of limes.

He kind of answered it. He said the owners had another dog die on them and he was to big to bury in their yard because of how shallow the topsoil was. So they took him to a landfill. That is why he thought it was a viable option.

This is one of the most hilarious and at the same time saddest threads ever. The lime, the pineapple, the OP, the anger. It's magical.

Worth mentioning that in the UK you have to report hitting a dog with your car to the police. It is a crime not to do so, same with sheep, but not cats.

You can run over cats all day and never have to tell the popo.

Yeah, pretty dumb idea, but the fault mainly lies with the owners. They gave methane the instructions, and he was just following. He could have been more careful and kept a better eye on the dog, and certainly has some blame, but really, it's the owners fault for setting up that environment.

oh I agree. It was going to happen eventually.

lmao, why are peple harping on the garbage part? It's an animal... and it's dead. Should there be a $10K funeral for a dog? Who cares where it's laid to rest... it's a dead dog. What do you think the vet does to a dog after it is put to sleep? Given a funeral w/state troopers escorting the procession?

OP, that shit sucks man... tough spot to be in.

So I believe we are about done with the grave. It was a tonne of work. Wanted to go down yo 3-4 feet but around 2.5 feet there were only rock. I spent an hour breaking rock just to get a couple inches further.

I wasn't expecting there to be so much blood. I forced gf to turn away while I wrapped him in one of his favorite towels. Lowered him down and covered him first with slices of lime then dirt atop that, compacted the dirt then added more dirt and compacted it again. Added rocks ton the top. Dug a hole for a headstone then surrounded the grave with gravel. Then sprinkled some vinegar to the top. Hopefully that will dissuade any animals to go digging.

I think it turned out pretty nice. I hope the owners feel the same.

Any other ideas for decoration?

As sad as it is.. The image of a dog covered by lime slices is just too much for me to keep a straight face.

My heart is in pieces right now. Should i contact them immediately? Should I wait until after the doctors appointment today? Should i wait till after the surgery? Should I wait until they return home? Do i bury the dog? Do i throw him away in the garbage?

:(

Gah. Talk to the guy before you set the dog out with the trash at least.

You guys really went dumb these last few pages.

Well tbh, OP did help out by posting pics of pineapples and what not. If a situation sucks, sometimes it´s better to find a way to laugh about it. - Not that OP should laugh in the owners faces when they come back -

To be fair I thought the limes were a marinade

My first family dog, a basset hound, got hit by a car and managed to survive, losing only a leg. He didn't live long after that because he drowned. We don't even know how or why he got into the pond :(

Op can you post a picture of the dog? maybe detective gaf can find you a replacement before the owners get back

Edit: After reading the thread you already told em. good, at least that's settled. lesson learned op
