If you could only have one system between PS1, N64 and Saturn...

As much as I love N64, PS1 all day every day.

Nothing has ever felt as mindblowing as Spyro, Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Tomba, Medievil, Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9, Chrono Cross, etc.

As much as I love Mario 64 and Zelda OoT, the N64 wouldnt be my pick.

Just library alone its PS1, easily.

N64 easy. The best parts if the PS1 in my memory were the cheap games because I jumped in so late, the EA Sports games that didn't show up on N64, and I had a choice to play gimped Capcom Vs games if I couldn't get money for the arcade.

The N64 games just amazed me much more and the 4 player setup was mind blowing at a time when the internet still meant doing homework for me. People talk about the small library but as a kid lucky enough to get 2-3 games a year, there was always something at the store I was dying to get my hands on.

Let's do this by genre...

Arcade racing: PS1 > Saturn > N64 (I'm sure plenty would choose Saturn!)
Sim racing: PS1 > N64 > Saturn
Sports: PS1 > N64 > Saturn (I'll entertain N64 for its superior multiplayer)
2D Fighting: Saturn > PS1 > N64
3D Fighitng: PS1 > Saturn > N64
Shmups: Saturn > PS1 > N64
Light Gun Games: PS1 > Saturn > N64
2D Platformers: Saturn > PS1 > N64
3D Platformers: N64 > PS1 > Saturn
Rhythm games: PS1 > Saturn > N64
RPG's: PS1 > Saturn > N64
FPS: N64 > PS1 > Saturn
Puzzle games: PS1 > Saturn > N64
Survival Horror: PS1 > N64 > Saturn
Stealth: PS1 > N64 > Saturn

What did I miss? Any objections?

Tough choice between the PS1 and Saturn. You have many superior ports on the PS1 along with plenty of exclusives but you also have the random superior ports on the Saturn along with timeless classics.

Have to go with the Saturn because of the Panzer Dragoon trilogy, Shining Force 3, Gungriffon, Sega arcade ports, Dragon Force, Netlink enabled Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, etc.

It's obviously got to be PS1 for it's huge diverse library.

Although N64 has my favourite games of the generation. Saturn is also great but mainly for imports.

Light gun and 3D fighters goes to Saturn as well.

Don't be silly.

House of the Dead, Virtua Cop 1 & 2 make it a no contest just on those.

Virtua Fighter 1 & 2, Fighting Vipers, Last Bronx, Fighters Megamix, Virtua Fighter Kids. Come on man.

Don't be silly.

Do wrestling games go in the sports category or 3D fighting? N64 vaults to first in either category for me.

bold... between VF2, Last Bronx, Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, the better port of DOA and some random Japanese 3D fighters, I'd argue this is more subjective than the rest of your rankings.

Compared to the Time Crisis games and the Point Blank games? Mmmmmaybe

VF Kids? Sonic Fighters? You're reaching!
You forgot Fighters Megamix
.

I would probably be willing to flip a coin for 3D fighters honestly. I love Tekken and VF both.

I also have a weird love for Bloody Roar 1 and 2. Shut up, they are awesome games.

As much as I loved FF7 and 9, I could not give up the last great zeldas, the slew of pc ports (like turok), and the best platformer Mario 64. I could live without GT2, I could live without medievil.

That's mostly how I'd stack them as well I guess.

Arcade racing is a tricky one, because Sega Rally Championship was massively better than basically everything else in that subgenre (don't ask me about Type 4), but the PS1 has a larger pool of "competent" arcade racers, and a much better version of WipEout 2097. Would probably agree with PS1 > Saturn there, but just slightly.

I'd put 3D Fighters in Saturn's favour on the back of Virtua Fighter 2 alone though. Wouldn't even need to get Fighter's Megamix involved.

Sonic Fighters

This never made it to Saturn.

SoulEdge/Blade
Rival Schools
Bushido Blade 1 & 2
DoA

I'm not sure I'd qualify Rival Schools as a 3D Fighter tbh.

DoA gets disqualified for the same reason Wipeout 2097 gets omitted from the Saturn side imo. It's a version of the game nobody should be playing in place of the superior version on the other console.

Shit I'd take a PS1 only capable of playing Squaresoft games over a Saturn or N64.

PS1 without a doubt, like the RPGs would be enough for me but there is so many intresting weird japanese games that i would love to play. lke there would always be something for me to play

PS1. That system was a beast, and the second coming of the NES.

If you could upload Japanese into my brain... ah hell, it'd still be PS1 but the SS would be a brace new world.

Has to be PS1 for me, personally its tied with SNES as my favorite console of all time. As much as I love the N64, the golden age of JRPG's on PS1 just has it outmatched for me. Saturn is definitely a console I want to give a shot some day. Back in the day, it was like this magical console that no one I knew had, or really even knew about and I still haven't touched it to date.
