IGN: The Order 1886 seems great, except for one thing

I'm interested in this game for the setting, story and visuals, primarily.

This.
Idem for me . Waiting more from western sony studios lead only to deception everytime in my case.
And the more their game are hype for everything but gameplay the more i was bored by it
(however next cutscene can be enougth for my motivation)

Pffff, stupid gameplay getting in the way of our amazing visuals and story.

Can't wait the for the day consoles become just real time graphics movie players.

This game has been a day 1 for me since its reveal trailer. Good to know they're nailing the world, that's what draw me to it in the first place.

As for the gameplay, well, previews. I'll never trust those things after Destiny ones.

People did, until the Alpha hit.
Most people said it looked boring and like nothing special.

This is true. I just don't agree with the post I quoted that it falls into the "great game, except for how it plays" catagory.

I have a hunch, based off recent footage, that people will be wrong about The Order as well. But I only blame RAD for its piss poor showing of the game so far causing so much concern about the gameplay.

*slow clap*

That is one hell of a shotgun.

The person on the right had his arm ripped off, I can't figure out what happened the the on the on left but it looks gruesome.
The only confusing part is how the couch isn't affected. The impact on the enemies is definitely there though

I'm kinda over IGN or GameSpot previews and reviews. These review come from people that get them (mostly) for free. Of course they're going to pan every unoriginal game, because they don't spend a dime to play them. If they were in a position where they had to pick and choose a couple from all they play, they would go the safe bets and choose what they know that works.
Most of these outlets criticise COD every single year for the same reasons, but then COD eventually get a good enough review and still sells millions (and I don't even play COD).

So what if it plays like GOW? That was and still is fun, and that's what matters

That's not what's happening here, Mr Hyperbowl.
Well, yeah. That's why i said "can't wait for the day". Because gameplay and game design is something that many developers only add because they absolutely have to and they would rather not. That's what is happening here mr Obvious.

The thermite rifle isn't a high impact weapon, so I don't know why they use that negative. It's a tactical weapon which is more about igniting enemies. There are other high impact weapons (arc cannon, concussion shotgun, limb exploder etc) that offer that satisfying brutality they're after.

Dammit RAD, i will wait for other than IGN.

The divide usually comes from people either having played a good FPS or not. Much like Killzone it appears to be subpar compared to similar games, and dull as dishwater to boot, but covered up by nice visuals. Perhaps the same could be said of other Sony games with mediocre design. I'm sure the writing will be equally bad. It seems to work for them though since there is a fairly large contingent of people who will fall over themselves to buy something that has a nice coat of paint.

Lol, Killzone 2 is better than most shooters out there, and is in no way subpar. I and others played plenty of FPS and know Killzone 2 is an amazing game. Don´t spout crap about people taste, you are not the arbiter of anything.

But I only blame RAD for its piss poor showing of the game so far.

Yep. I think it would've been much better to just show some screenshots and artwork every now and than instead of having the same old playable demo at every event.
People have seen the same gray in gray corridors over and over again, the same short gameplay section over and over again.
Of course many will think that all this game has to offer.

This game is gonna bear a lot of brunt for the fact that people are bored of cover-based TPSs, and that it's not trying to move the genre forward in any meaningful sense.

What annoys me the most about the game is that it's supposed to be about hunting werewolves, yet all we see is shooting hundreds of humans in standard corridors. It's like hey we have this amazing concept. Let's throw it out of the window and do what everyone else is doing.

I think it's very pretty and the setting is great, but that's about it thus far. I wish that rather than another corridor shooter with a summer movie-esque plot and explosions that it was going for something more tense and methodical where they could flesh out the novel setting they have and have some really unique gameplay in it.

This game is gonna bear a lot of brunt for the fact that people are bored of cover-based TPSs, and that it's not trying to move the genre forward in any meaningful sense.

Rather than not moving things forward, the gameplay shown thus far seems almost regressive. When push comes to shove I still like a good TPS but I'm just not seeing anything appealing here outside of visual presentation. I feel like they have to have some golden idea or twists that they're just not showing or that the game just previews really poorly for some reason because there's clearly a lot of talent there and this just can't be the extent of things.

C'mon now...
Its not the games fault that nobody understands how to use the thermite rifle
Exactly. The one weapon that doesn't offer immediate impact. I'd have thought they'd be commending the more tactical aspect of the thermite rifle, instead they're asking for more typical shoot shoot bang bang.

Either this is what RaD is fully capable of in the console-space or this is just one giant series of red herrings to throw us off on release date; and I can't believe I'm actually leaning towards the latter despite my immense cynicism with this title.

More like another Heavenly Sword.

This is exactly my thinking on it. Extreme focus on production values while the gameplay takes a backseat. Sony does have pretty strong track record of going for non-standard interactive experiences that challenge the traditional view of what a game is, but they also seem to love the interactive movie that does the bare minimum of pushing the game part of the equation. If there's a meaty game in The Order, then RAD and Sony are certainly doing a poor job of revealing that with six or so months from release after some significant delay.

It'll feel right at home with the rest of the Sony games that have gameplay as their Achilles heel. Hell, if everything else is good enough, it'll probably win Game of the Year and have a remastering the year after!

If this is a typical cover shooter then that's very disappointing indeed. I was hoping it's more RE4 than Gears

He said until. Uncharted 4 is not coming before next holiday.

I'm tired and confused. The Order doesn't come out until next year right so wouldn't it be before 2015 Holiday? So wouldn't Uncharted 4 be out before then? Idk I'm going back to sleep lol.

I'll be giving this a miss. They really seem to have prioritised graphics over everything, seems to happen a lot with Sony games.

I do worry about the gameplay from what I've seen and there haven't been any glowing reviews from hands on experience with it from conventions or the press. I'm still shocked that this isn't a more melee focused shooter given their work with God of war. Also just to differentiate the game from other 3rd person shooter.

This game will review 80-85 easily, concerns on gameplay are over-exaggerated at the moment. The footage I saw from gamescom showed a step-up from the minimal impact the guns displayed prior to. Graphics are already top-notch, I imagine sound will be the same. If RAD gives us a solid story with some intense set-pieces throughout the campaign I can see this game hitting a 90 meta as well. Remember, the game is not out yet, it's work in progress.

Way to early to making decisions like that, imo. They still have 6 months to show that it isn't all style > substance. The Gamescom trailer that I linked above shows promising gunplay.

Sounds like a Sony exclusive.

I dont know why any of you act surprised.

All of their prettiest franchises are light on the gameplay department.

If you want innovative gameplay from a Sony exclusive you look at their lower budget games and indies.

Didn't the developers say

"Oh yeah it's really great we love the look and the style but... it's a game... we can't get around that fact"

Or something along those lines? Made it so dead to me.
