In hindsight do you think sony regrets not doing a SeriesS style console?

They probably regret not paying a premium to make sure they had more chips.

The PS5 not being held back by an inferior version of the console is going to help them overtime more than having a compromised and weak console just to reach a certain price point.

Funny how you drift around my comment about games also being released earlier if they didn't have to optimize for series s, lemme guess, that time being spent further optimizing it for ps5/series x wouldn't make a difference?

Well if you provided some evidence showing this to be the case, that would help.

I know the remedy devs gave a somewhat cryptic response about the seriesS, saying the Xsx/ps5 is caperble of more then the seriesS, he then said if they design with the seriesS in mind it would not be a problem.

And while the seriesS may increase development time because it is another platform, I dont know how that would mean the ps5 and xsx have worse looking visuals because of this.

I mean most game engines are built with scalability in mind. As the matrix demo, plus games like flight and forza horizon 5 have shown.

Jim Ryan has said that he wants the PS5 to be the most successful playstation generation for sony. Its looking like it's going to be a huge success.

When asked about the SeriesS Jim Ryan said:

“One thing that can be said is that if you look at the history of the game business, creating a special low priced, reduced spec console is something that has not had great results in the past. We’ve considered that option and seen other executives who have attempted this discover how problematic it is.”

https://www.destructoid.com/playstation-ceo-jim-ryan-throws-shade-at-xbox-series-s/

Jim Ryan, phil spencer etc are going to say whats best for there company.

however sony seem to not be shy of a cross gen approach, they want the highest installbase possible, and are investing in multiplayer games which appeal to wider audiences. Like the PS4 they want to be the console for the everyman.

and while devs have said that the SeriesS can present some challenges, it does not effect Microsoft because devs have to make the game for the Series S if they want there game to be on Xbox. Games like horizon forbidden west and forza horizon 5 have shown you can have a next gen experience while still also being available on a vastly weaker console.

In The UE5 matrix demo we have seen that the fact the SeriesS exists does not negetively effect the XsX or PS5 version.

so to conclude I think that while Ryans concerns surrounding a seriesS like console have been legitimate in the past, I would not be surprised if the heads of Playstation are looking at the SeriesS and thinking from a business perspective it would of helped there business goals without having detrimental effects to the overall quality of the games.

I would not be surprised of we see sony do a SeriesS style console in the next generation or the PS5 will become the new base for them.
Sony doesn't need a Series S, they already have a PS4 or PS4 Pro for that. They don't sell more PS5s because can't produce more due to lack of chips.

A PS5 series S would be a stupid idea because first it would mean even more chip shortages issue for each skus because they'd need to split the available chips into more SKUs (remember they plan to also release PSVR2 and to continue with PS4) and also would damage the quality of future PS5 only games that will take full advantage of the hardware due to way lower specs of the Series S.

And well, new batches of PS5 and Series X get sold out very fast but not with Series S, meaning it wouldn't help them sell more or something like that.

So no, thanks.

It's been brought to my attention from Master Racers that 5 year old rigs can run modern games just fine if you're willing to accept 1080p.

Both Sony and MS are running off the shelf components, right?
The problem is even 5 year old graphics cards can have more RAM than series s. Lack of ram and memory bandwidth seem to be what's giving devs the trouble on series s.

A cheaper console than the PS5DE, when they can barely keep up with demand now?

No, they like making a profit...or more of a profit vs having an even cheaper console. And its a simpler situation vs what MS did. Only thing we see right now is that MS is prioritizing the Series S to sell units.

When the PS5 gets back on track....we will see how things shake out for the rest of the year, next year.

Hell no!!!!! One hardware target allows superior optimization… example TLOU II….nuff said. I want next gen not 1.5 gen and the Series S is worse in some ways to the One X…

Devs already said series S is a nuisance:

https://www.dualshockers.com/xbox-series-s-is-a-pain-for-developers-due-to-memory-issues-report/

It honestly shouldn’t exist. And games are going to be more and more demanding as times goes on.

Séries S shouldn’t exist. It’s holding this gen back dramatically.
It really isn't. Developers are just giving the series s versions the chop shop treatment.

We have seen 540p resolution already on the series s, and 720p is common. Not a damn thing has been held back by series s.

Maybe that changes in the future, but at the moment it's PS4 and Xbox one holding things back.

That's the problem exactly, they could be selling more consoles and increasing their installed case if they sold a lower spec console
Its a problem that MS is barely taking advantage of tho....when Sony basically sat out Jan - Mar of this year. Sony already hit 20 million PS5's sold....so why would Sony need to sell a cheaper console than the PS5DE?

Just wait until you see how it holds back the Xbox series x and ps5 pro
It ain't going to hold back Sony games and when proper nextgen games start to release the Series S will look worse than ever. Right now Sony is being held back by availability but a PS5DE and PS+ Extra is by far the best value for people that want to go all digital.

I'll wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Series S owners end up upgrading to the PS5 or PS5 Pro in the future, subscriptions services makes it really easy for people to change consoles given that they don't own the games.

The PS5 is already set up to be a massive success, surpassing the PS4 in sales once the supply issues are overcome. Sony was way more prepared for this generation than MS was and it shows, what do you think will happen when games like God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 release?

Only of it helped them get more consoles out there, I don’t know if it’s easier to manufacture the series S or not, but it’s clear as day that the PS5 is doing good but it’s being severely hindered by supply constraints.

Sonys series s is the ps4.

Both games are beautiful. Neither are next gen experiences.

Yeah, and I can afford to buy the same can of diet coke that Warren Buffet purchases. Does that mean I am as rich as he is, or is it simply the price is so low that it doesn't present a financial constraint for either of us?

No, they will just have to work within the restrictions of the seriesS specs

I'd honestly argue for gamepass, but that's beside the point of, when I said it will hold sony back I meant 3rd party titles/non-exclusives

Sony already has an answer to Gamepass with PS+ Extra, like it or not. Why should people care about MS games day one when they haven't published a single games in 2022 and won't release a big game until Forza Motorsport in 2023?

People are really underestimating Sony in the subscription space for no good reason.

personal preference, I think Ms has the better 3rd party selection, and as you said their upcoming published lineup isn't great so they'll make up for it elsewhere, especially when Sony is trying to find their footing

Could be wrong though

It's memory setup is creating and posing problems for developers.. yet it's not negatively affecting process to you?

Judging by the games and demos released game engines are scalable, and if the seriesS was "crippling progression" we would not see concessions on the ps5+xsx version of the matrix demo.

Even cross gen games like fh5, FW and gt7 are well received on current gen consoles despite them being cross gen.

I mean if the seriesS is holding back the xsx + ps5, then show me.

But it does not really matter, people will complain if they want too.

I don't think they regret not making a lower spec PS5 at all. I feel they have a great product and pricing strategy with $100 between the two sku.

I guess only the future will tell us, and them, if was a good idea or not.

We still don’t know the future 3rd party lineup for PS+ so that’s point is mute.

As you mention it's now down to personal preference, I have both right now, Gamepass has the advantage when it comes to indie games if anything but do you think the general audience values those games?

The best big third party game MS had recently was Guardian of the Galaxy and it's already on PS+ Extra and Sony even got Assassins Creed Valhalla. As far as first party games available there is just no comparison, Sony catalog is far superior.

I think people confused Sony being slow to react to gamepass (because they could afford it due to their market position) with Sony having no answer to it.

No,

But I think they will regret that they didn't keep PSTV 2.0 hardware in their portfolio

We'll see how the Series S impacts first party games over the course of the generation. That will tell us a lot more about whether Sony should regret not putting out a lower powered version.

If the Series S continues to sell well when inventory isn't an issue and it doesn't drastically hold back 1st party initiatives, then it'll become an industry-standard in the future.

If it stops selling and/or holds back first party games, it'll be a cautionary tale.

If I was on the fence between a PS5 digital and an Xbox Series S and inventory wasn't a problem but budget was a consideration there is no way I'd buy the Series S, but that is just me.

Guaranteed. Especially if they’re much easier to manufacture and keep the shelves stocked. Nothings been released or shown that couldn’t run on one either.

Apparently problems don't ever.... EVER result in delays or lower quality

If only that was the case ..

Its so good you and the chap u replied to have shown proof that the seriesS optimization causing enough extra dev time that could be used to make the xsx + ps5 versions better.

Its an interesting therory, but thats all it is.

Just stop trying, not like they care lol Even if Series S meant a little more dev time, there are benefit for it to exist: More people can afford a current gen console, which means bigger installed base, equal to better sales opportunity to game devs

No. This is the absolute stupidest thing Sony could have done. Fuck the Series S. That little shit is making games less good.
