In MK11, it will cost you $6440 to buy every skin in the game without grinding

I think this is great when talking about cosmetics. The goal shouldn't be to get all of them, the goal should be to get enough so that every player doesn't look like a twinkie. If you make it so everybody can get everything relatively quickly they still end up looking like twinkies because most people will wear whatever the community decides is cool. Half the players in div2 are sporting a red fuzzy kangol ffs.

I think it would be better to lock these behind actual in game achievements though.

What I feel like developers and publishers should be looking at is "how long will players spend on our game and how can we offer satisfying rewards that will extend that play time"?

The way it's set up now just sullies the whole experience of playing the game.

It feels like the money I already spent on the game and the dlc fighters STILL isn't enough and the cunts are constantly trying to figure out ways to ask me for more.

It would be cool if specific items were locked behind completing the towers in specific ways.
So you complete the normal tower as scorpion and you get an alternate skin.
The complete it on hard and you get a 2nd alternate skin for the character you used.
Complete very hard and colour variants are unlocked for that character.
Complete on the hardest difficulty and you get a new fatality for the chosen character.

So then you can even see from what people are using online how good they might be at the game.

Instead this just feels like they aren't really rewarding you for playing and getting good at their game but rather are trying to get into your wallet. I already paid for the full game though so why should I have to pay again?

I wouldn't be against them looking at how many players might play 100, 500, 1000 or 5000 hours and deciding to reward that in some way.

Now, I'm just feeling like I bought the game and I want to play the story, the towers and a good few online matches and if that unlocks stuff then awesome. The idea of grinding and grinding or paying more money to get stuff is just annoying.

I'd prefer if they reassessed how to reward gameplay.

The Krypt is fucking boring, annoying, time wasting, shite.

Is there anyone who actually fucking enjoys going into that 3rd person crap and running around looking for chests to unlock?

Is this real already? *hope*
No idea. I have zero interest in buying the game so I don't know if the costumes are server side (I doubt it - they have to be available offline). If they aren't server side there will surely be some cheat engine hack to get them all.

frankly disgusting and i don't believe them for one second when they say this wasn't the plan from the start.

sadly people will keep buying this games and then complain later, so things will only get worse and worse.

And the worst part is that in one year or more, they will release a "Komplete" Edition with all DLC and stuff.

Things are wild nowadays.

The annoying thing for me is that MK sells huge every game, there really is no need for this level of sf microtransaction shite.
I suppose its the age old business adage, the more you get, the more you want.

So, how much money do we need, ED? Can you please correct us?

Is $100, $200, $500, $1000 on this $60 product, just how much? Spill the numbers!

Yeah. If the $6440 amount is incorrect, then just give us the real number.

Oh, none forthcoming? Then I'll continue believing the $6440 claim, thanks.

Well, its $0. You need to pay $0 to unlock all of the costumes.

The unlock method is way too grindy and the RNG makes it 10x worse, but that doesn't change the fact that there isn't a single costume in the Krypt that you need to buy and can't access through playing the game.

Its sleazy and predatory but who needs 60 skins per character?

And if you plan on playing the game for years you can most likely get enough Koins to unlock them.

Would of been a better look to start with say 10-20 skins and drop the other 40-50 over the next 12-24 months as "DLC".

It just seems like content overkill designed to sucker whales which makes is sleazy. But you don't need 30 costumes for Baraka to enjoy MK11. I think by the time I get 4 or 5 I would probably be good.

What's with the Johnny Cage Ninja Mime Costumes? I got an Unlock-message at the first start. are they part of the base game or do they belong to the season pass (yeah, I was weak, I know -_- )

Lol, so many publishers think they're going to make money off the following:

Shameless trash. Just watched Maximillion Dood's breakdown of how random and grindy the rewards are. It's insane. This is a full priced game.

Wow. Whatever happened to cheat codes to skip the grind? This is ridiculous.
Yep. I really don't understand how this game is reviewing so high after what I have read about cost to quick unlock. Until very recently this entire genre seemed to offer cheat codes for all unlocks in years past, followed by a relatively cheap one time fee to unlock everything. I don't care if cost to unlock everything is 100, 600, or 6k. Any of those would be excessive based on my history with genre. This is a blatant attempt to rip off consumers in my opinion (based on what I have read), and its rather disturbing how toeing a certain line gets a free pass for that.

If reviewers were actually doing their due diligence, they would have went through the tasks of informing the consumer about this grind, the cost, etc..

Most of the time the microtransactions aren't in review copies of games; why have those servers live for reviewers?

If you're going to do something someone (Or more importantly, a large group of people) doesn't like, why allow it to be investigated in the first place?

Companies are going to want you to do the initial buy in, then when the microtransactions come into play you can't just dip out; you already made the initial purchase and can't return, etc. Keeps their numbers up.
That and most people would go "Well, already bought the game and can't return it, minus well keep playing and just not buy anything."
Still pumps up the companies played hours number for investors.

That's why this delayed microtransaction/ingame store stuff is bull shit; it's only allowing the developers/publishers create a larger net for their money trap.

Then reviews should be updated to reflect that, otherwise it’s a fucking scam from both sides.

? It doesn't make any sense to have ingame stores open for reviewers. They're not going to buy anything in the store, so it'd be throwing up the code and servers, resources etc that would have nothing to do with reviewers are doing, and gaining no money from it.

Reviewers are there to review the game in the state it's in; there's review copies and retail copies, and they're even coded with different app IDs within the console's ecosystem (Xbox, switch, etc).

Also as a professional if you're inviting me to review your product and you're not coming to me, and want me to spend money to review your product? I'd promptly tell you to fuck right off and to not waste my time over dumb shit like that. "Spend your own money to review a product I want you to review for me," is a dumb thing to ask.

I’ve seen companies in the past make stores available for free in the review runs, etc..

It’s shady any way you cut it. Nobody’s asking reviewers to spend money on the stores, but having it there so they can gauge on what it will be to inform the consumer is an important part of reviewing the game, otherwise the review is not reviewing a complete product that will be in consumers hands.

Last time I checked the game costs regular price. When you go to a gas station do you remark to yourself how much it would cost to buy every item or do you focus on just the purchase you're making?

I'm not trying to defend MTX, I'm arguing your bullshit logic on optional goods. I like options.

That's not a very good analogy. There's no pretense to being able to get everything in the gas station any other way, and there's no secondary economy embedded into every interaction at the gas station trying to extract resources from you by deception or attrition.

Now tonight he has been still going on and on about the problems with the krypt (because he is stuck there trying to get the Brutalities, the only thing he wants), and the biggest thing is the wasted time, since he'd even be willing just to buy out the krypt for real money like in MKX, even for $40. After a while he went off on this point:

After this he compared to the systems Killer Instinct has (where you can basically earn everything for a character just by playing the character a few days), and someone brought up how you could directly buy things with source crystals in Injustice 2. After explaining/ranting more he said he wouldn't even care if he didn't love the game so much, because he really does. He said they listened to players so well and made everything else in the game so perfectly that it makes the suffering of this system so much worse.

This is what it looks like, a true fan, who has been been mega hype and spent a month going through the whole franchise with his friends who are also true fans, thoroughly loving everything about the game, suddenly hitting this stupid grind wall where they are running around a krypt and gimmicky consumable-requiring towers rather than playing online which is the main thing they got they game to enjoy.

This is what they do to the passionate enthusiasm of their biggest fans? Love of a thing should result in reward and more opportunity to expand enjoyment. That is how you sell products well. Memories of a game you love should not be tied up with a mindless droll of running around finding random chests filled with 95% trash you don't care about at all making zero perceivable progress toward particular things you want.

Just like Max said , one currency, adjust the towers and this game would not be marred with such poor publicity.. but they chose the wrong path and it hurts those that love MK due to nostalgia. I won't be a hypocrite because I do love MK but I also despise this route they took to Nickle and Dime customers. Hell I would of been fine with exactly what Max said and still be in acceptance with the two alleged Kombat Packs or the "ultimate" edition a few months down the line with everyone. They are even bringing in a dlc character I've always wanted in MK. it truly sucks.

I don't think the intent is to own all the skins. Half the fun comes from getting loot and unlocking new stuff. The only reason to buy something is if you really just want that one costume and you are not getting it through normal gameplay or don''t want to wait. Who actually needs all the costumes anyway?

I'm pretty out of touch by playing nintendo and world of warcraft for all of time, but why the hell would anyone spend money on microtransactions on mortal freaking combat. Its the most retarded thing I've ever heard. People getting scammed buying shit in a fighting game for costumes and characters? It adds up to 6 grand if some imaginary person gambled enough to attain all this stupid shit that used to be free back in the day?

Not talking to any of you people but to the hypothetical masses that apparently buy this tripe. WAKE THE FUCK UP. What are you doing?

Listen, I'm going back to play wow on the character I had to make a second account for so I could invite myself to my own guild because I'm fucking weird. THAT MAKES FUCKING SENSE.

I've had a few beers and I'm on all sorts of pain meds I'm mostly joking. Just not about the Wow stuff. I actually did that.

So, Ed Boon responded. 🤔

Uh-huh. You *can* EARN them in-game, as long as you’re willing to grind your ass off. Or you can donate money to NRS for the right currency to buy your desired item and skip the long grind.

As much as some people want to claim that this MTX thing is all on Warner Bros., Ed’s defensive reaction here is a pretty strong indicator that NRS is in on the scam.

As long as it's not levels or characters this doesn't bother me. From the devs point of view it's , 5-10% of are players will buy costumes for we'll charge X amount to meet our goal. So yeah if you bought every costume the cost would seem unreasonable. They are not pricing things based on a significant number of people buying everything. I think the big problem here is the pain and suffering this causes completionists. Sadly the idea of unlocking everything is not a healthy mindset in the current gaming landscape.

Eh, no.

What's so harmful about completely optional things that you never have to buy if you don't want to?

No one was saying this with the optional near $100 Doa6 season pass. Making things extremely grindy just to tempt people to spend money on microtransactions isn’t cool imho.

Boobs = bad (unless being violently ripped apart)

Micro transactions = good

“We covered them up more than the men because we now respect women, as we rip their faces off and smash their ribs in the torture/gore porn.”

I don’t have a hand in this fight personally, other than their stupid asinine reasoning.

It gets better, Ed Boon actually sent Dreamcastguy a message because Dreamcastguy talked about the Krypt and MXT's in his review.....

On one hand you don't have to have all the skins and it creates a bit of diversity in the game.

On the other hand, if it's on the disk, it's on the disk.

A dodgy practice to be sure.

Just to be clear, i hate microtransactions and I have never paid anything other than the base game in all my life, not even DLC. But this issue with Mk is blown way out of proportion because gameplay is as fluid and polished as can be. Game is GORGEOUS! Net code perfect, can find players no problem, great connection and all this at 60fps. Story mode production is Marvel movie quality. So the biggest problem is its gonna take you ages to unlock all the costumes or pay for them. If you want to play The Sims then go play The Sims, I am no fan of micro-transactions but I couldn't care less about them here because it changes nothing that the game is amazing and probably the best fighter out there. I tried to customize one character..ok i tried and left it. Wont be going back to that menue any time soon because I couldnt care less what color of my spear is or shape of my mask. If that is what makes or breaks a game for you...you got issues.

I’ve always been a big fan of Midway and its former stable of developers, but I’m rapidly losing a lot of respect for Ed Boon with his desperate defense of the scam he helped to hatch. He got caught trying to rip even more money from consumer wallets and doesn’t like the criticism that His Precious is getting.

Again: This is the same man who willfully called microtransactions a “necessary evil”. He knows what he’s doing, and he’s pissed off that he’s getting called out for what he’s done.
