Indie Games 2014 [March] Now Voting - Post 651!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Voting March!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list or a "honorable" mention if you feel that one game deserves another mention even though it wont count for your list. That way it would also make it interesting to read which games we should check out that others might have enjoyed. You dont need to "rank" the 10 games. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of the month, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the last day of the month, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

Discovered this cool little game today

David. - $2/sale for $1 (PC, Mac)
hwf1mzur1oeluge4g.jpg

http://www.fermentergames.com/david/

A Physics-Based Platforming Bossfighter!
You play David, an awfully small abstracted chosen hero tossed into a blissfully simple world overrun by giant culminations of evil physics-beasts. As David, you are given a slingshot-esque gift that you will have to use to conquer your colossus foes. Hold, aim, and fling to attack (Angry Birds style!).
Think Limbo + Shadow of the Colossus + Angry Birds.

This game is so cool. I'm really enjoying the minimalist abstract visuals, but the gameplay is equally impressive. Given the description and mix of inspirations, I wasn't sure what to expect, but now that I've played, I definitely see the SotC and Angry Birds inspirations. (Limbo vibe is a bit vague)

The bosses are large angular masses of shapes, moving with oddly menacing animalistic behaviors. One is a lunging, almost bull-like enemy, another a flying cluster that hones in on you as you deftly evade it. The levels progress from simple arena style fights to more puzzle-like battles such as a fight with a shark like boss where you can't bring your weapon below the surface. Each fight has two modes: a normal mode and a hard mode where you only have one piece of health.

I can't wait to see what content is added in future updates, because the game is already solid and has so much potential for even more variety.

Glad you tried again and I really hope it works out for you guys this time. Did you make improvements to the alpha since the last KS?

Oh dude it's a full chapter of the Wordsmith story, fully voiced over, added new features to combat, you can save, everything. LEAGUES beyond what was previously played.

Super awesome, you should probably mention those improvements in every space where you are posting "Hey I am back and still want your money!" ;)

My votes:

1. Card City Nights
2. Cubesis
3. Glitchspace
4. Nothing to Hide
5. Into the Underdusk
6. Black Ice
7. Lennas Inception
8. Mirage
9. Cosmochoria
10. Banished

And from the others, I was surprisingly in love with Principia and Action Painting Pro, which might have landed in the voting top 10 during any other month.

Finally did the video impressions on Cubesis!
http://youtu.be/ZBhqVvF-O6E

I did mention earlier that I liked the game even despite its faults, but the dev thankfully listened to my complaints and worked out those faults. The game is 10x more playable now and now gets an easy and hearty recommendation from me to you guys.I'd really love if you could check out the video at least to get an impression of the game, because I still think its a rather unique game that deserves way more love than it currently gets.

Easily among my favourite games of the past few months, even despite its simple core mechanic because the game still manages to challenge the player by needing to balance several of those individually simple mechanics that are affecting each other.

Anyway, it was my first video where I already played a lot of the game so I was more explaining the game instead of documenting my first experiences with it. If its vastly worse or better than the other format, let me know please so I can decide to stick with one.

Y'all need to consider playing Escape Goat 2.

That's really all I have to say right now.

Because I'm going to have to go back to playing it.

Just a heads up that I've got a new build of Cosmochoria up which fixes a few things, streamlines some others. If you haven't tried it out, please do! It's a 'pick up and play' ie no major commitment required -- just float around and plant some stuff / kill some stuff / unlock some stuff.

Web: http://www.cosmochoria.com/#play
Win: http://www.cosmochoria.com/presskit/cosmochoria-win.zip
Mac: http://www.cosmochoria.com/presskit/cosmochoria-mac.zip
Linux: http://www.cosmochoria.com/presskit/cosmochoria-linux.zip

respect.

I played this for about 20 minutes today. It was pretty enjoyable. Good work, man.

Cool :) I will have to give this a shot and maybe do a video about it on my Let's Play channel, if that's alright.

Of course, definitely ok! And monetize away.

For let's plays ive been starting to give the advice that you should hold SHIFT and hit the #1 on the top of your keyboard on the title screen a few times to give you some starting gems. Having the "Fast Plant" upgrade and the level 1 gun upgrade, even the first heart/jet upgrade will help keep the let's play more interesting. This is all stuff you would earn after an hour or 2 of playing, but those initial plays can be a bit more on the chill side as you're still learning. For youtube/entertainment purposes going in with at least the "fast plant" upgrade will help keep things a little snappier.

Have fun and post a link here or DM me with a link (or twitter @mantrakid) i'd love to watch you play. :)

Since its one of those games where I like it more, the more time passes, I'll need to nag directly again. Any particular reasons you guys arent giving Cubesis a try? I cant remember reading any impressions other than mine at least.

I even made a YT video just for you, who do I need to bribe for someone to try this game! :p

It would probably be even worth getting its own OP, due to how unique it feels overall, but I cant find the time for it atm.

Escape Goat 2 is out, seems like a big upgrade from the beta and is pretty damn amazing.

But of course I'm stuck on 9-4. If anybody works it out, I'll be your friend.

Edit. Worked it out. I love me.

Played straight through to 9-4, that's exactly where I stopped last night! Is it just about split second timing at the end there or am I missing something?

Escape Goat is great. More of the same, but since the core mechanics are so good, I have no problem with that. The new visual style is wonderful

Oh, and I just learned something amazing. Posted by the Goat Sim dev on the Steam discussions
Actually, all animals are goats. Cows are just overweight goats that can't sit. Giraffes are just really tall goats, bears are buff and fluffy goats.
Mind. Blown. ;p

Definitely looking forward to tryign this out - just haven't had a sec in all the KS prep. Will make it a point to check it out today though.

My son and I did a full Walkthrough / Let's Play of "The Everloom" today while hanging out. Truly love the art style and music is really nice, we had fun. Obviously spoilers for the puzzles if you watch the full vid.

How old is your son (if I might ask) and how did he like that game? Visually, its definitely very appealing.

He just turned 5 :D he enjoyed it but I think he was put off by all the text a bit so I tried to keep it interesting for him by using funny voices, etc, but it got a bit text heavy and philosophical near the end so he was definitely losing attention. Really wished there was just more to do in it it than walking around / talking. When they introduced the 'enemies' i was hoping for some sort of attack move, but alas. :D It's actually an eye opener because I've been wanting to make a game similar to it for a while now, so it's really interesting to see how hard it was to hold our attention even with pretty beautiful art / style and nice music.. It was well written but it just... wasn't enough to fully engage us. I found myself sort of just 'skipping' the text as it got closer to the end.

Even the puzzles were a bit easy / predictable, which is a bummer as that was the biggest chance for varied gameplay. Overall though it was really well produced, you definitely couldnt say it was a half-assed effort. I quite appreciated all the charms it had.

Funny because if i do a top 10 list for this month, it will likely include the only 10 games I actually had a chance to try. :) Its going to be a top 3 and those 3 will be the only ones ive had a chance to try hahah. :)

Yeah, I had the exact same impressions. It has a solid foundation for a game but they sort of failed on working out the nuances to actually make it properly engaging. Thanks for writing that up :)

I hope more people play Escape Goat 2 and can tell me how to beat both 7-10 and 9-4. I'm stuck on both of them. I've beaten everything else available. The game is fantastic and addictive just like the first! Though after these two I think it's pretty much over. I need help though!

What I did for 9-4 is get the 3 keys (two with the snake, one with me), and somehow the snake was long enough to activate all the switches except the first one so I just had to jump at the right time so that all the yellow switches are activated simulatneously.

Thanks! It's funny, as I went to sleep last night I wondered...wait, do those keys make him longer? Yep...well now just 7-10, which seems possible but incredibly finicky. I feel like I'm missing something again. Too many blades.

Might make another video tonight, any preferences?

Cosmochoria (due to our current KS) and Card City Nights might be among my choices, but maybe someone actually wants to see gameplay of a certain game? I was thinking of revisiting Black Ice too, but as I said, if anyone has a suggestion, let me know :)

Shutshimi update:

We're XBLIG approved. We're also set up for Humble Store and Desura. Greenlight campaign is plugging along slowly, but as soon as we get our back-end finance stuff in order we'll be launching. Can. Not. Wait.

Also, thanks to Toma and others who tried the game. Because of the feedback from you guys and others we decided to add a tutorial/attract mode to hopefully help explain what the hell is going on in our crazy game.

Very good idea, but man, I am really curious how the general playerbase will react to it. Its just so... weird :p

Have you gotten any further in Whitewash? I was interested in the game, but all the videos I could find were from early in the game and didn't really show any of the more interesting mechanics hinted at in the screenshots and trailer. Would definitely like to see gameplay from later in the game
