Camera Obscura is a puzzle-platformer in which you attempt to summit a ruined tower – a relic of a fanatical sect trying to reach the sun. Facing dangerous animals, crumbling architecture, and perilous pitfalls, can you reach the Summit, and perhaps, redemption?
Camera Obscura uses an innovative "afterimage" mechanic that allows the player to temporarily clone the Tower's architecture in order to span gaps, create staircases, and freeze moving platforms in place. The ability to copy and manipulate each level allows players to find many paths through the tower's 57 maps.

My Let's Play of Catacomb Kids:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9310oIFNIds

Quick Impressions: Roguelite Platformer with tons of RPG mechanics. As you explore, your map will slowly flesh itself out with an almost intense fog-of-war shrouding your playing field which managed to kill me good with traps just out of sight. Even though I know they are randomly generated levels, they feel designed with cruel intentions. Which is to say, this game is HARD. Unmercifully hard. And it's permadeath.

But the game is about experimenting. Not only do you have to pick a class with specfic attributes, you're given a random roster of characters to choose from (within that class) that have a random assortment of starting equipment and attributes.

And even though it's only version 0.0.6 game is really tight. Animations are excellent (in my Let's Play, I land on a ledge and my character had to catch his balance which felt perfect for the situation because there were a set of spikes right below me) as well as cause and effect. Find a potion and drink it? Now you have an empty glass bottle. You could throw it at an enemy or drop it on a trap.

You can carefully open doors so that you may re-close them, or you could bust them open and then destroy them.

There are only two classes to choose from right now with another four to be released at a later date.

I think my only real complaint is that it's local co-op and not online co-op.

That's not the half of it. Find a potion? Blast it with fire to turn the potion into an area of effect vapor. Drink the potion, then you can throw a mushroom in water and fill the empty bottle with poison water. Using a burning red-hot rock to cook food or a bloody rock to distract fish. The depth is so good

The Old Tree - Short (17 minutes) but charming point and click game, it's not that hard and the puzzles are very simple and you'll hardly get stuck in the game. It's short and free so it's hard to not recommend it even if you don't like the genre.

Downwell is a Japanese game being developed by one person, you descend a dungeon while shooting the enemies with your shoes, it's being develop for mobile and I guess with Devolver picking it to publish we will get a PC version

I'm also suprised they don't have Crossing Souls on that line-up

That reminds me, we featured this one game about going up a dungeon, which was a bit Spelunky-like but only had the first chapter out back then. Does anyone remember the name? I bought it and wanted to check up whether part 2 has released by now.

Crossing Souls looks interesting, thank you for bringing my attention to it, and strangely there is really nothing about Paradise Never maybe it's a good idea to try reaching Devolver to know more about this game.

Nah, it wasnt a metroidvania, if I remember correctly it was more of a roguelike in progression. It was strictly just venturing up a dungeon, and you mostly needed to rely on good timing and a few items. I really liked it, but I am not even sure there was anyone else who played it since there was no demo and it cost 5$.

Hey guys, sorry to be a n000b but I'm trying to get into more indie games - this thread looks great, just wondering about the format, I see you make a new thread every month - is the 'recently released games' post JUST for the month of the thread? e.g. in this thread, are all of those games ones which have released in february? And then next month's (March's) thread will have the best of those in the 'best games of last month' section?

Recently released is usually the games we collected the month before, so the February games contains mostly games that have been released in January. The reason for that is that maintaining these threads takes a LOT of time, so we set up a system, where everyone can post new releases in here, and at the end of a month, they get picked up by a program (Toma-bot), which creates the thread for next month.

Its perfectly fine to add games that released in the past couple months as well, sometimes we even include even older games if they havent been featured yet, since Indies are really easy to miss and it would be annoying to not feature certain great games at all, just because we missed their release.

And yep, March will have the best games of February in the best-of part.

Just post it again, maybe with a nicer blurb and updated info regarding platform and price. We feature games twice in the released section, once for the first playable version (alpha, beta whatever) and the second time on full release.

The game needs a lot more balancing before the final version, I suggest waiting for the full release before playing some more.

OP impressions:

Overture
Fun, little action game that has plenty of replay value and content through unlockable and levellable character classes and a high difficulty level. The run mechanic is pretty unique and even the loot is relatively interesting, considering it adds new effects instead of only boosting your damage/defense (like a 6% chance to summon skeletons per hit or what not). It doesnt do many things wrong, and its certainly fun, but somehow its just... missing something. Despite having unlockable classes and whatnot, its just not making me want to play a lot of it.

Quasi
I didnt expect this, but I really, really liked this game. Its a very unique puzzle game that is held back by some controlling weirdness and the completely pointless main character flickering (I get what its supposed to be, but come on, turning it off would still make it much more pleasant to look at), but overall, this is definitely among the most interesting games this month. I wont spoil the mechanics, because in the first 2 levels, you'll spend the most time just figuring out what the mechanics actually ARE. What are your powers? How do different level elements react to each other? Very similar to Fjords/Starseed Pilgrim in that regard. After you got the hang of it, the game throws a surprising amount of levels at you, which I had a blast solving. I havent finished the game yet (about 50% through), and in the beginning the weirdness with the controls put me off a bit, but the more I played, the more this game rose up in my February voting list. Its only 3$ and is an actually unique and intriguing puzzle game. Yes, buy and play this game guys. Also take your time and dont give up right away if you cant figure out the rules within 10 minutes ;)
Make sure to maximize the windows size.
Sandstorm
Thanks again to Managore for the key/download, glad I got to play it. Its another unique game this month, putting you into the shoes of a traveller in the desert. The way this game handles the concept of being lost in the desert, and the style with which it executes it is pretty damn memorable. The game IS different though, and a bit more experiential, but it doesnt really hurt the experience at all. Its certainly not for everyone, but it is... intriguing and a 1-hour experience (plus more if you try to beat the higher difficulties) worth having with the best mechanic I have ever encountered about making someone feel "lost". If you have 3$ lying around for a unique experience, recommended. Small thing that didnt matter much here, but still: Someone needs to tell all devs in the world to either avoid using Z as control key or giving Y the same function as Z, its so, so, SO annoying if other common keyboard layouts are ignored.

I've been playing some of Hot Tin Roof and am a bit mixed on it so far. I love the aesthetic (nails the classic film noir look, which I'm a fan of), the writing is fun if a little unfocused, and I'm always up for more games where I get to be a detective piecing together clues and questioning people.

On the other hand it sort of feels like it's trying to do more than it can realistically accomplish. Its way of handling your different abilities for instance is tied to your revolver, and you have to go through a somewhat tedious reloading sequence every four shots you make. It's a cool idea, but I'm already getting annoyed at how often I'm being pulled out of the game to do it.

There's also no map and the world is huge and labyrinthine. I'm already immensely lost and expect it's only going to get worst going on. The platforming is pretty loose, which is still functional, but I can see it getting agonizingly tedious if they start throwing in more complex level designs later on.

I do like what I've played for the most part. It has a ton of personality, there's just the sense it doesn't quite know what it wants to do so it throws a lot of ideas out there and hopes they work well together. Will have to play more to form a more complete opinion.
