Ive played the demo a couple of times, and in comparison to the alpha version that you can pay for, the demo is lacking a lot. Theres only a handful of enemies, and only three levels to shoot your way through before having to start again. The main problem is the lack of enemies, though, as it makes the game very easy, whereas the more recent builds of Fancy Skulls are not easy.
The basic features are in place, at least. Youll start with the pretty decent revolver and can collect coins, health and power-ups if you clear the rooms youre locked in. Enemies dont come at you until youve entered the room and a highlighted area within. You can still visit the shop and gamble coins for potentially big prizes. You can get new weapons, like the shotgun, submachine gun and rocket launcher. Its all there still.
But theres a significant lack of challenge present, and given that Fancy Skullss visual design is very minimalistic, and not in the most attractive way, either, and theres no music, it makes the game seem quite bland, indeed. I can say quite happily that the most aggressive enemies, and those that turn rooms into first-person bullet-hell in the later versions of the game, do make it much more compelling, so dont judge the game on this demo.
The problem Fancy Skulls has mostly is that its not enough just to be a first-person roguelike-like shooter. Theres Paranautical Activity and Tower of Guns that are a bit more exciting, fast-paced and characterful. Thats not to say the weird, estranged enemies and unusual visuals of Fancy Skulls is lacking character, but this demo does lack a display of excitement, I feel.
