iOS/tvOS Gaming November 2015 | Out of your pocket, into your living room

I got an iPhone 6s this week and after a lengthy hiatus I'm sorta back to iOS gaming, though my habits have changed.

I think the last noteworthy game I have purchased was Kingdom Rush Origins so I am completely out of the loop at the moment. What's really worth checking out? And what would be the game to really show new iPhone's power (if there's one out like that?)?

I am playing mostly on Vita now so I don't think I need games that try to mimic full console experience, most of them just are just not fun to play. What I am looking for are fun pick-up-an-play arcade games, games like monument valley (puzzle adventure?) and maybe interesting indie like games. Vertical screen gameplay is a bonus too...

So far I am enjoying Alphabear and definitely getting the Room 3 soon as the previous two were fantastic. Anything else I should check out?

Check out the OTs for a more complete list, but off the top of my head: Dark Echo, Hero Emblems, Card Crawl, Five Card Quest, Last Horizon, Subterfuge, The Sequence, Downwell, Prune, This War of Mine

The pitchforks are out over a Touch Arcade for Zodiac and its devs poor planning, testing and lack of upfront honesty on what the release was. Ironically, Carter's story links to a thread I started on the Zodiac forums to get answers on content (accidentally created my ID as awp68).

It still is kind of sad as there are good things in the game, but the bugs, walled off classes and, of course, ending going of the cliff with "coming soon" killed it. With a lot of people getting refunds, I have my doubts on whether it will be able to recover financially. Episodic or not, the game was not ready for prime time.

I already completed it, it gets better and better the more you play.
It's pretty long too and has (two) super cool endings imho.
I'm not really feeling the game so far. Like the visual design is cool and the story is interesting, but the interactive fiction aspect seems pretty barebones and simple

It gets better?

Wait how do you get refunds?

Wait how do you get refunds?

If you have iTunes on your computer or have the email reciept, you can look through your purchase history and hit the "Report A Problem" link, it will take you to the pag where you can put in the reason and any comments. Then you'll get the refund. You can also search iTunes and "report a problem" and it will take you to the Apple website and you log in and do the same thing.

Interestingly, I now hear that if you do a refund, you cannot purchase the app again. I'd imagine this is to prevent repeat refunds and abuse, but it's kind of stupid. If a game has bugs and crashes or doesn't work on iOS 9 or something, that's a legit reason to get a refund. But say they fix it in a few months and you want to buy it again? You can't. That's ridiculous.

Google Play does it the right way. You get a refund once, but if you buy the app again, you can't get a second refund. That prevents abuse but also allows you to rebuy if problems were fixed.

Edit: MB beat me to it, but still thought it was a good time to being up the recent policy change.

How long can you wait to get a refund? I'm nervous about Zodiac's future but I don't want to be screwed in case the devs do manage to bounce back because I like the gameplay and the art style a lot.

I have no idea what the time frame is for refunds. Someone over at TA did mention that there may be a way to get around the rebuy issue by using iTunes to make the purchase rather than on your device. I can't vouch for whether that works.

I was in the same boat with Zodiac but with so much negative publicity and many already asking for refunds, I have my doubts as to whether the devs can succeed.

The game had a lot of promise, but was not ready for launch and then the misleading description that originally didn't mention that it was episodic wasn't cool either.

We've had refunds on games that we'd taken down from the Store almost 3 years earlier.

There doesn't appear to be a limit.

There's a big update to Ticket to Ride for iOS.

What's New
• Asynchronous gaming (called "Multi Session Games"): play several Ticket to Ride games in parallel, turn by turn. Get notifications when it's your turn to play, watch your Player Clock, invite your buddies, etc.
• True cross-platform: start an asynchronous game on your iPhone and finish it in the evening on your home tablet, Mac or PC. "It's your turn" notifications are supported across operating systems.
• New map: India: it's a vertical one! The in-game user interface has been enhanced to support vertical maps. This also opens the road for future maps, since many expansions of the board game use the vertical format.
• Reworked user Interface for online gaming: direct access from the Play panel, and new Buddies invitation system.
• Adaptive user interface: the user interface adapts itself automatically to the screen format and offers two display modes: one for small screens and one for large screens.
• New social features: with the "Share" button at the end of a game, post a very nice graphic detailed representation of your game.
• Universal version: this version now works on both iPad and iPhone.

Previously you needed to have the "pocket" iPhone version to play asynchronously. Now it seems all the features has been rolled into one universal app with cloud cross-play. Awesome.

From a fast 2 hours of playing, Magic the Gathering Puzzle Quest is fantastic.
Sadly freemium, but fantastic.

From what I saw if you login every day for a month, you get 4 boosters, tons of mana to level up and at day 30 a new planes walker (which you can buy for 10 dollars or so immediately).

Matching gems is only part of the strategy....most comes from your deck and how you queue the cards to be unlocked.

If only it was premium......

This Warhammer 40k: Freeblade game is promising..

..not! This is as far as I've gotten, it refuses to go past this splash screen on any of my devices.

I had the same problem...eventually it self resolved after a while.
Besides a very cool use of 3D Touch, the game is trash imho.
Even the graphics is not that great imho (the mech is good, everything else is awful on a 6S).

Well I do not know if MtG:puzzle Quest will be tweaked....but I already have enough money to buy everything possible (all planes walkers).

The game is great, still a bit rough (expecially on iPad) on some menu flows, but the battles are wonderful so far...about to complete first chapter.

Is this out in the US? I can't find it for download anywhere.

For some reason I imagined this would be a game where you progress through board states and opponent conditions in actual Magic: The Gathering, haha.

That would be a perfect game for me, because after playing Hearthstone I'd like to learn. The game is a bit tough to get into for a beginner. I tried one of two of their yearly apps and didn't really absorb anything.

Actually I think this is easier and more approachable.
You have a limited pool of cards in the beginning....and you will see them rotating a lot so you will learn fast how to better use them and queue them.
Then you will get new cards slowly and one by one.
At least that was my impression.

I'm in the last battle of first chapter...after 4 hours straight I hit the timer...(I have to wait some minutes to replenish my health...I want it full for last battle).
Generally it recharges really fast (I could 'buy' it but you use the same currency for booster...and I'm saving them for the ultra rare).
The other currency is stones...you use them for leveling up and to buy other planes walkers.
I'm over 100K and level 9 (each planes walker costs 15K and there are 4 besides the standard druid)....so I have plenty already to get one eventually and level him up.
Still deciding which one to get.

I don't know, I am really enjoying it - I haven't really played any on-rails shooter on iOS before, but Freeblade is fun so far - though probably thanks to its controls. It's exciting to see 3D touch implemented in future games because in here it's working so smoothly. The gameplay is smooth and enjoyable if bit formulaic and I'm only after finishing chapter one, so tedium will probably creep in sooner or later. The progression and how well you do in the levels is gear based akin to Infinity Blade series and that's how you probably hit the paywalls later on. But for now it's a quick and enjoyable in short bursts kind of game, perfect for commuting and if you have a 6s check it out just to see what the future of iOS gaming could be.

Speaking of awesome graphics, are there games that show what 6s can do? I heard that one game from Atypical looks fantastic but the reviews are quite lukewarm.

These are roughly my impressions from an iPad Air, so slightly less graphically impressive but still pretty good. Not a terrible download by any means. No crashes on my side.

Anybody know if that star wars companion app requires internet connection? I've got a long trip coming up and don't want to be stuck with a bunch of games that need a connection

Edit: nvm, tried it for myself. Of course it requires a login. Anybody know any good offline deck building games?

Card City Nights, Dream Quest
Card Crawl has a slight deck building element

What do you have to do to download games from a different countries store? Can I do it all on my phone or do I need to use my computer too? I wanna try this Gundam game but it's only available on jp/Singapore/HK/Taiwan stores:

You can do everything from your phone.
Just download (or try to) a free app...press change store, create new account.
Fill the data (you need a address and a phone number).
Done.

Just remember to switch accounts accordingly from now on.

And I thought iOS 9.1 fixed that Game Center crashes... But they still exist. Annoying as hell. This prohibits me seriously from trying the new games every week. Did not really check out any games the last couple of weeks, besides of the Apple featured ones.

MtG:puzzle Quest is pure crack.
My new Nissa deck feels unstoppable, but I started to hit some placeholder art tough :(

I've been on the road, so a little slow to announce this one, but we just published our first clicker title last week, Tap It Big : Casino Empire, by US based developer Fuzzycube.

screen322x572.jpeg
screen322x572.jpeg

Currently has a 5 star rating on the Store, and we've been getting really good feedback on it.

Personally, its the first clicker on mobile I have played, and the title I have probably played most over the last month in my own time. Didn't think it would be the type of game I'd play until I actually started playing it. Must get round to taking a look at Tap Titans.

whats a clicker?

A game where you tap on stuff to accumulate stuff so you can tap on more stuff to accumulate more stuff. I didn't think the concept would be very engaging because it feels like it would be light on actual "game" until I started playing one. This game has the highest retention and daily session count of our whole portfolio!

Tap Titans, Bitcoin Billionaire, and Cookie Clicker are examples of successful ones.

Picked up Crowntakers. It's a RPG/roguelike, iPad only (also on PC). Really polished and challenging. Definitely recommend if you enjoy the genre. Combat is turn-based, simple but strategic

Yes. I picked it up a while ago on Android. Good game and, like Sproggiwood, it's challenging yet still accessible for those who want to dabble in roguelikes. I give a slight edge to Sproggiwood but I'd still highly recommend it.

Well, Destiny made me buy a PS4 again, and this time will be the only game installed... for now. Completely hooked.

In iOS related thing, Mini Dash should be on PS4 and Steam as well. On the same Super Meay Boy quality level, even improved on the formula and adds their own stuff. Could play amazingly with a controller.
