Is 2013 the best year for gaming...ever?

Well so far in terms of actual games being released, it's pretty terrible. After the next-gen consoles get announced it will probably still be pretty terrible, with all the anti-consumer stuff being rumored.

Look at the hardware coming out this year, sure 1998 had great games but this year has a mighty fine looking line up of games to, its a straight up victory when you add it all up.
Hahaha no. Every month we have threads like this saying year 201x is the best year oris the new 1998 or is better than the last one. Let s face it, it s all been downhill since 1998-2000. Less and less new gameplay ideas, less and less gameplay, gamespraisedfor movie type "qualities", more publisher consumer rape bullshit andeven more disapointing sequels. There is an indie scene but itis ridiculously insignificant compared to the amount of crap we are served for 10 years. Even with new hardware (that are stupidly hyped) I havelittlefaith this will improve.

In 1998 you had games that defined or redefined their genres and gave inspiration tothe vastm ajority of games released after without ever being equalled andthose games are still played by great numbers today. Who plays games for more than2-3 years today? It s all normal and logical we have sequels just 6 months or a year after that bring close to nothing new and not even a bit of interesting ideas of gameplay.

This type of thread reallyis worrying to me because it certainly means we ll neverhave games close to hl, sc, baldyr s gate (...) quality ever again and we can still go lower with people being satisfied if not more...

don't people always say this? Everything looks crazy, the year is front-loaded and nuts. Then E3 happens, we see a bunch of cool stuff announced for the year after, COD gets announced, companies make fools of themselves...

Then everything starts getting out of the crowded holiday season because... y'know... COD. Half of the release list ends up being kinda disappointing because of the hype and people kinda forget the awesome stuff that came at the start of the year as they say "Yeah... this year was good, but NEXT YEAR will be awesome."

New hardware OBVIOUSLY will bring things up, but come on... There'll be a ton of disappointing-ass launch games too.

The only way to judge a "best year" is by influence. 2007 is considered one of the best years ever, and for good reason. Mario Galaxy, CoD4, Bioshock, Orange Box (and thus Portal), Mass Effect... It's years like THAT that resonate, and they do so because the software resonated.

It's off to a good start with titles like Rising, Fire Emblem and Ni No Kuni and indies like Hundreds, but it's kinda early, no? It looks promising though. Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Mario and Luigi, Yakuza 5 (localize this thing!), Rayman Legends, GTA V, The Last of Us, indies like The Witness, Spy Party and Monaco, new titles from Nintendo Tokyo EAD and Retro no doubt and lord knows what the next-gen consoles will launch with. The return of PGR? A new Alan Wake? Will The Last Guardian come out?

1994 was radical.

Super Punch Out!!
Super Metroid
Earthbound
Kirby's Dream Course
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World
Uniracers
Mega Man X
Tetris 2
Wario's Woods
Stunt Race FX
Illusion of Gaia
Doom II
Streets of Rage 3
Theme Park
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
Knights of the Round
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Dynamite Headdy
Mortal Kombat II
Demon's Crest
Final Fantasy VI
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
NBA Jam
Earthworm Jim
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball
R-Type III: The Third Lightning
System Shock

Not till now. All the games released this year have been boring as shit. DmC, mgr, ds3 are all underperforming.

I guess 2013 has the potential. With new consoles will come new games, I think that is where the potential is for greatness. We just don't know exactly what we are getting.

Besides, you can't really know until the end of the year. Many of the so-called great titles slated for this year could very well suck. Just look at Aliens: Colonial Marines.

One thing is for sure, 2013 > 2012. Last year was terrible.

Where the hell is Total War: Rome 2 on that list?

People say this shit every other year and the fact that you're saying it when we're not even 2 months into the year is absurd.

Is it going to be a good year? I think so. You're right, we've had some decent releases already and some big ones to close out this gen within the next few months. Looks like the capper is going to be GTAV.

The only way you'd be right is if Sony announces the PS4 tomorrow for a Fall release with The Last Guardian and FFVersusXIII as launch titles. Then I will bow down.

What's coming out for the 3DS this year?

Fire Emblem: Awakening
Etrian Odyssey IV
Brain Age: Concentration Training
Luigi's Mansion 2
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates To Infinity
Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins
Castlevania: Mirror of Fate
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Project X Zone
Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright) 5
Monster Hunter 4
Pokemon X/Y
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Mario and Luigi 4: Dream Team
Mario Golf World Tour
Rune Factory 4
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies
Dragon Quest 7 3DS (maybe)
Fantasy Life (maybe)
Bravely Default (maybe)
Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney (maybe)

Those are the big exclusive retail releases for now. I am positive there will be more than that announced once we get further in the year though (plus there will be a third party 3DS Nintendo Direct in a few days announcing more new games).

Too early too tell, to be honest.

But it's looking good so far. 3DS lineup looks amazing, but we'll have to wait and see for Wii U I guess. PC/PS360 looking good as always.

Still to come:

PS4
Xbox 720
Oculus Rift (Game Changer )
Nvidia Shield
GTA 5
God of War : Ascension
Tomb Raider - highly contested since reveal; unflattering previews.
BioShock : Infinite
The Last of Us
Injustice:Gods Among US
Splinter Cell:Black List
South Park :Stick of Truth
Company Of Heroes 2
Gears Of War: Judgment
Watch Dogs
Star Wars 1313

Already had:

Crysis 3 - arguably the least good entry in the series.
Dead Space 3 - arguably the least good entry in the series.
Devil May Cry - disliked by longtime fans.
Metal Gear Rising - good but not extraordinarily.
Aliens Colonial Marines (Yes I know)

I'm sure I have missed a few titles but cheese and rice what a line up.

Am I wrong in saying this will be the best year for gaming....EVER! ?

We'll see about the rest of the games when they release.

Well it is going to be a cool year for announcements of consoles and such. But there is little to be excited about on the games front, unless some big unknown games are going to be revealed soon.

Let's see what 2013 can do, coz 2012 was awful.

1998, 2001 and 2007 are still the holy trinity for me.

For old PAL GAF, 1992:

Ultima 7, mortal kombat, Ultima Underworld, Kirby, Wolfenstein 3D, Indian Jones FoA, Ecco, Super Mario Kart, Sonic 2, Alone in the Dark, Dune 2, Flashback, SNES in Australia

Good times...

What's coming out for the 3DS this year?

Fire Emblem: Awakening
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Castlevania: Mirror of Fate
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Lego City: The Chase Begins
Project X Zone
Rune Factory 4
Mario Golf: World Tour
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Ace Attorney 5 (I think its TBA)
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
Pokemon X & Y
Naruto: Powerful Shippudden
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Tokyo Crash Mobs
Kersploosh
Harmoknight
Mutant Mudds 2
Shantae & The Pirate's Curse
Jett Rocket: Super Surf
Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger

Everybody praising 1998 knows what's up; the amount of quality games released in that year is staggering. I don't know how many people here will agree with me, but I think that 2011 is really underrated:

Ghost Trick
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Xenoblade Chronicles
Bastion
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
Rayman Origins
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Spacechem
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Child of Eden
Outland
Dark Souls
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Portal 2
Radiant Historia
Sonic Generations
Batman: Arkham City
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
The Binding of Isaac
Bulletstorm
Super Mario Land 3D
Gears of War 3

I guess being a fan of RPGs and platformers makes me biased here.

No. Your list is mostly just a bunch of AAA garbage.

But System Shock 2 on GOG sure makes up for it.

Yup.
AAA publishers cast marketing, it is super effective:p

Here's 1999 for you:
-quake 3 arena
-gta2
-Soul calibur
-gran turismo 2
-system shock 2
-alien vs predator
-grandia
-AOE2
-planescape: torment
-crash team racing
-soul reaver
-rollercoaster tycoon
-super smash bros
-worms armageddon
-dungeon keeper 2
-everquest
-opposing force
-tiberian sun

I mean look at this... that's all all star games, no 8 or 9/10 padding here, just straight 10/10 games

This list is pretty much only all time classics and big names, I left out all the more niche classics and stuff like ridge racer type 4 / ff8 etc that aren't exactly classics but still better than the tripe in the OP

Oh and the fucking dreamcast released too that year in EU and NA.

You can make similar lists for 1998 and 2001 (as seen above).
Why do you think people refer to that time (98-2001 with a year of variation depending on opinion/platforms) as the golden age of gaming?
SO many all time classics many of which are still the best in their genre released during that time.

Noone's going to remember dead space 3 or frigging tomb clancy 10 years from now. Everyone who played games in 1998-2001 will remember most of the games listed in this topic in another 10 years.

there won't be any significant launch titles most likely since they're usually always weak.

games should determine best year for gaming, not hardware

I'd like to think 2013 will rate up with the very best lineups of past years but I have my doubts. Launch years for new systems almost invariably disappoint. I'm not feeling much of anything right now outside of GTAV, The Last of Us and a rock solid lineup of 3DS titles. Certainly not seeing the potential for a repeat of 1998 or 2007... but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Stick of Truth would have me excited if I trusted Obsidian to hit a major release window for once. I don't.
Oculus Rift is a nice idea but until it's packaged for consumers it's just nifty tech to dazzle folks at trade shows.

On the other hand, I'm very enthused about 2014.

This year is going to be pretty average it looks better because 2012 was so dead

2013 will definitely not top the best years in the last decades.

2004 is a personal favorite in the last decade: metroid prime 2, halo 2 and baten kaitos from the top of my head.

Amen brother! AMEN !

Exactly. To add some irony is the mix, in the golden era, the top of the line games usually got 8-9.5 marks, while the new era AAA titles easily get away with !perfect! 10\10 scores...

New hardware always creates a lot of excitement and anticipation. I'm sure it will offer a great new platform for many wonderful new titles, but judging by the industry's trend we've had for the past 10+ years, I'd bet that it's very unlikely we'll get another '98-01 golden age.

We've got an old saying here: The mountain trembled, a mouse was born.

PS: I'm very excited about the Oculus Rift though, so I remain some optimism.

When you're following up 2012, ANY year would look like the best ever.
lol

a lot of people have said this and i started think about, i dont even know what else came out besides Spec Ops, Darksiders 2, Far Cry 3, AC3 and ME3. Oh and the yearly CoD/sports games

Darksiders 2 and ME3 aren't even worth pirating

2007:

Lost Planet
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Rogue Galaxy
Crackdown
Virtua Fighter 5
MotorStorm
God of War II
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
Etrian Odyssey
Forza Motorsport 2
Tomb Raider: Anniversary
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
The Darkness
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
BioShock
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Warhawk
Skate
Halo 3
Project Gotham Racing 4
The Orange Box
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
The Witcher
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Super Mario Galaxy
Crysis
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Mass Effect
Rock Band
PS3 launch in Europe if you're into that sort of thing..

a-wine-tasting.jpg

Now that was a great year.

Let's wait until something this year actually delivers. At the moment it's just hope and promises.

Yeah it was fucking horrible. One of the worst years ever in gaming in my opinion.

Should be a strong year, even if most of the next-gen xbox and playstation launch titles are crap. If the The Last Guardian magically does get released this year, it might be enough to push it into best-gaming-year-of-all-time category... assuming it can hold a candle to the previous games. And if the impossible happens and it's actually a PS4 launch title... it's going to be doubly hard to secure a PS4 on launch day.

What? It had

XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Fez
Spec Ops: The Line
Virtue's Last Reward
Journey
Asura's Wrath
Hotline Miami
The Walking Dead
Persona 4: Golden
Crashmo
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Sound Shapes
FTL: Faster Than Light
Spelunky
Katawa Shoujo
Trials: Evolution
and more I'm forgetting

2012 was the best year in a long time.

2002 was also good. Don't know if anyone mentioned it.

Actually not that bad. Looks like most are indie though. AAA devs are awful, they should be embarrassed
Asuras Wrath was bad. QTE galore. fuck that shit

We get this every year, and it probably has been true some time. But most of the AAA titles just are going to disappoint and I don't have more confidence in the list you are posting. The best titles are most likely to be unexpected titles. See the best rated games of the previous year Journey and The Walking Dead, which were not expected to become the best titles.

I am expecting that the best titles will come from Indie developers again, maybe stuff such as The Witness or Amnesia: A machine of pigs. All the titles that you have mentioned that already came out do not seem very good imo, except for Metal Gear Rising maybe.

And you are putting all kinds of AAA titles there without a lot of people here expecting they will be good, Tomb Raider and the new Splinter Cell both do not seem to be favored here very much and stuff like God of War and Gears of War just sounds like more of the same.
