Is 2013 the best year for gaming...ever?

We get this every year, and it probably has been true some time. But most of the AAA titles just are going to disappoint and I don't have more confidence in the list you are posting. The best titles are most likely to be unexpected titles. See the best rated games of the previous year Journey and The Walking Dead, which were not expected to become the best titles.

I am expecting that the best titles will come from Indie developers again, maybe stuff such as The Witness or Amnesia: A machine of pigs. All the titles that you have mentioned that already came out do not seem very good imo, except for Metal Gear Rising maybe.

And you are putting all kinds of AAA titles there without a lot of people here expecting they will be good, Tomb Raider and the new Splinter Cell both do not seem to be favored here very much and stuff like God of War and Gears of War just sounds like more of the same.

I just mentioned the AAA stuff but your right I left off a bucket load of good stuff also coming.I think I'm on the money about 2013, I know people always claim every year is the best, but this time it really might be 2013.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Resident Evil 2
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Xenogears
Parasite Eve
Banjo Kazooie
MGS1
Zelda Ocarina of Time

A few of my favorites from that year.

Wow. Now THAT is a good year.

1998 will always be the defining year of all gaming. Nothing will ever top it.

in terms of games, it doesn't even come close to the best.

Depending on which threads you go into it will either be the best year ever or the beginning of the end of the industry.

I imagine late 2014 will be better as that's when we'll really start seeing some amazing stuff on the new consoles

Nah no way. I'd say 2014 or 2015 should be among the best though as the major publishers will have hit thier stride with thier new projects.

Hmm let me see..

PS4
720
Steambox
Ouya
Nintendo
Pc gaming

The thing i see here is harder competition about the customers, since it now is sooo many choices avalible. Hopefully that can lead to quality services and quality games.

Yeah , 2013 is a exciting year to be a gamer.

Considering how bad the last two years have been, it's going to be better than recent years. I'll tell you if it's the best in 2014 though.

Halo 3
Project Gotham Racing 4
The Orange Box
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

/list warz

Yep. No year has beat 2007 yet. And I bolded some more titles that deserve it.

I wouldn't quite precise it as the best gaming year ever but it is going to be a very good year, much better than the like the past five years? Never say best though as next year or future years could be the best.

OP has no Pikmin 3 in his post.

OP does not like fun.

Seriously though, Pikmin 3, Bioshock Infinite and GTAV are the only enormous things happening this year for me. Nothing will ever beat 1998.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
It's been like... two months, but uh... it's off to a good start, I guess. Fire Emblem has been jawesome, and Metal Gear Rising might be on my all time top 10 after a few more playthroughs... so I definitely can't complain.

It's already better than the last few years, just based on those two games.

This thread comes up every year, and if it doesn't then publishers aren't doing their job.

I don't think it's the best year ever (2012 seems a better year to me), but it sure is a good year.

I just had a look at 2012 releases. Not bad though. I have completely forgotten about a lot of games. If combined with this year then I would say the two best years so far. Combined.

Ocarina of Time

Half-Life

Metal Gear Solid

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Resident Evil 2

Tekken 3

StarCraft

Baldur's Gate

Banjo-Kazooie

Grim Fandango

Xenogears

Thief

F-Zero X

Among many other.

Thats a good line up, but too much cool hardware is being thrown in the mix this year.

Imagine a God of War 4 or Uncharted 4 launch title for the PS4...that might be a game changer.

You keep talking like 720 and PS4 are confirmed to be released this year. And there is no guarantee GoW4 or U4 would be ranked among best game of all time.

LOL GoW Ascension and GoW 4 releasing in the same year.

After the disappointment that was UC3 does anyone really want UC4? Not to mention Naughty Dog has TLoU this year

Looking at that list in the op makes it look like a terrible, terrible year to me. :-/

Only thing I'm looking forward to from it is revengeance.

Luckily there seem to be quite a few 3DS games I'll be picking up this year as well as Pikmin and Mario Kart 8. With a little bit of luck Bayonetta 2 and W101 as well.

Edit: holy hell! How could I forget EDF 4 and the new Dodonpachi! :-O

Consoles aren't games, so no. We are going to get a bunch of launch title crap that for some reason people are excited about.

3ds has more games i'm excited about than what we know so far about the games releasing later on in the year.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
I'm buying no hardware and none of the games listed in OP save for MAYBE MG Rising.

Not the best year by a long shot. Nowhere close to 1998.

It might be a better idea to ask when most of the games you've listed are actually out and people have played them.

I'd say it is a good year for JRPG fans :

Ni No Kuni
Fire Emblem
Tales of Xilia
SMT IV
Etrian Odyssey IV
Ys Celceta
Rune Factory 4
Project X Zone
Atelier Meruru

And im probably forgeting a few one and we might see few more (DQVII remake,Bravely Default)

Now to find the time to play all those RPGs.... -_-

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
that list is just depressing. Maybe you're too young to remember what a good gaming year actually was

This year isn't started out well at all imo. Crysis 3, Dead Space 3, DmC and MGR were all greeted with underwhelming critical or fan reception. Good on Fire Emblem: Awakening for being praised and being one of the best title in the franchise however. Ni No Kuni does look like a fairly solid jrpg, I will probably buy it in a couple of months.

I don't think Tomb Raider and the seemingly yawn inducing Gears of War: Judgement/God of war are going to reverse the trend of underwhelming AAA titles.

We will see how The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite and GTA V turn out (not taking into account the next Playstation or Xbox right now or any launch game).

So far it's unfolding as a mediocre year at best, but there's ton of unexpected stuff so who know how it will turn out. :]

We have this thread every single year without fail lol. Also so far, no way not even close, but you can't judge yet seeing as so much is yet to be announced.

I jumped the gun and started this thread a little too early in the year. Now that the dust has settled on all the major releases console and game wise, we must finally decide if in fact 2013 was the best year for gaming..ever, what say you?

Nope. Many of the games you posted either weren't good or were pushed to next year

You don't think the likes of GTA V, The Last of Us, Bioshock: Infinite, Battlefield 4 make this year stand out?

Infinite wasn't good. Soldier games come out every year. The other two are good marks for 2013 but don't make it an amazing year on their own.

That said it was still a satisfying year:

Fire Emblem
Guacamelee
Last of Us
Super Mario 3D World
Link Between Worlds
Tearaway
Pikmin 3
Ni No Kuni

Off the top of my head.

2013 was one damn fine year, filled with some of the best AAA games I've ever played (Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us, GTA V), and also some of the best indies (Rogue Legacy, Papers Please, Kentucky Route Zero), but overall I feel that it just can't match...

The Great 2007:

Super Mario Galaxy
Call of Duty 4
Uncharted
Bioshock
Crysis
Halo 3
The Orange Box (Portal)

And I'm sure I'm even missing some. 2007 is the greatest year of the generation, and perhaps the greatest year in gaming ever. 1998 is a damn strong contender, as well.
