Software - in the West - is the real sticking point and has tended to lag in comparison with DS. Hardly surprising, when you consider the cost of 3DS titles compared to DS.
Not for the games mentioned.

After 5 NPDs
Super Mario 64 DS: 949,000
Super Mario 3D Land: 1,980,000

After 4 NPDs
Mario Kart DS: 875,000
Mario Kart 7: 1,580,000

about to buy like new vita with 32gb memory card and uncharted for $225 -_-

That's cheap compaired to retail prices. Over here a playstation vita costs 250 euros and a 16GB memory card costs about a 50 extra euros. Ridiculous.
Where are you going to buy it? That shop must make a loss on that sale.

Damn I would jump on that quick

I traded for mine from craigslist too, it was 3 days old, I mean released on 2/22, I had on 2/25 LOL

Cost me a Near Mint (I used it less than 5 times) 120GB 360 ($125-$150 worth) + $100 Cash

Got a 3G/Wifi VITA + 8GB Memory card + Uncharted Golden Abyss + Superstar Dust Delta/3G access for 2 months

Why in the world would someone sell a brand new unopened 3G Vita and game for $220. Had to have either been stolen or a used unit he resealed. Otherwise he might as well have flushed $120-$150 (taxes) down the toilet. Makes zero sense.

Maybe they won it in the Taco Bell contest and since demand is so low they have to sell it cheaper than retail.

Lots of people get them as gifts and don't want them. They just want to flip them super fast and not have to worry about any bullshit.

Go to craigslist, it's like a fucking fire-sale going on over there

Some on there are selling it for $330... Are You FUCKING KIDDING ME!:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/vgm/2962983655.html

HOLY FUCK!, how about this one:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/vgm/2960651334.html

Gamers who want the hot new shit, think they want/need it, buy blind/never educate themselves, then buyer's remorse kicks in, others come out looking better

You can tell the FEB's on craigslist also, sometimes the gift/"found it" (stealing) links, but most are just insane

I should have waited, could've gotten a better deal, might trade off my old 60GB Fatty PS3 for one of these VITA's for bro's birthday, and get 3+ games out of it for myself, and just share

amazing prices. I'll have to see what's around here in Miami. I'm not interested in a new, full price unit, but I'll take a used one with some games for a good price.

For devs only? No way to test apps for regular users?

If you have a Vita and download the the SDK, I guess you'll be able to test other people's source code. Given you have all the required assets (art, music etc...). I don't know how the SDK signs its executables or whether it requires some special provisions to run other peoples code.

HAHA Even AT&T is fucking confused what a VITA is

Got an e-mail, take survey:
[Love the Subject Header]

3Wgpu.png

It is technically looked at as a phone. Come on now.

They just need a killer game or two, right now

Something that makes you go Oh Fuck!, need that shit now

I want 1-2 good RPG's, not the PSP back-catalog, I mean new

There's nothing out there that is keeping players busy/interested

Problem is a lot of VITA owners are finishing shit quickly, and not going back to those titles, cause the already played most of that shit on the PS3, and just wanted a portable version just for double dip, or used as a back-up

Some Non-Vita owners are creating their own backlog, by waiting it out

I remember the PS3 didn't start out amazingly, but it had a few titles to keep you coming back to it, for me mainly was Resistance Fall of Man/Motorstorm

VITA needs those kinds of titles to keep people glued to the system
The reason people get tired of the VITA so quickly is they devour the content real quickly, and are always hungry for more, if it is only thing they are using as console
Some of the games do have grindy features, but rather than using it in a smart way, they feel tacked-on just to squeeze out extra game hours, but most don't want portable game to be super grindy

I mean Uncharted GA has this bounty medal system, keep replaying certain levels, it drops randomly, and sometimes nothing drops for a few tries, which pisses the player off, and doesn't reward them properly
They even added this awesome Black Market feature, of certain items not in the game, only gotten by friend's from your friend's list, if they accomplished hidden goals, and award it to you, and vice versa or if you need a bounty medal, you can request it, hopefully friend checks and gives it

Also the game release list is dampening hope, yes E3 is around the corner, but most of those games shown will be end of Q4/Q1 2013+

It is technically looked at as a phone. Come on now.

I can't make calls, so, sorry it's technically not a phone. Just cause it has 3G doesn't magically make it that. My TV has internet access, so by that logic my TV is technically a computer. Come on now.

People are giving the Vita too much shit. The Vita launch line-up blows the 3DS launch line-up out of the water and the Vita has only been out for 4/2 months FFS.
People are giving it shit because it's selling worse than the 3DS was despite having a much better line-up.

perhaps we should give gamers shit instead for having poor taste? ;)

Let's lay blame at the right peoples feet! ;)

I'm not even a fan of the system, but that's just a hilarious thing to say.

AT+T's interesting in the vita is related to the 3G functionality and you paying for that functionality via them. As far as they're concerned, it's pretty much a phone device that they're selling top up cards/data plans for.

Don't think it's anything controversial - it's likely just how they view the product in their system/business more than anything else.

So it isn't a matter of the lack of developer support then. Maybe a price issue.

No, it is the software. It's not nearly as appealing as people make it out to be. Most of the franchises on it are well worn, to say the least.

In Japan, it doesn't have Monster Hunter. It doesn't have many JRPGs, and I don't think any original ones yet (New YS coming, I think).

In the West, it doesn't have any FPSes, you know, the most popular genre? No WRPGs, either. Yes, it had Uncharted, but unless you are a PS3 fan, it's not that exciting a series.

Good points and I agree.

I just feel like the Vita has gotten too much shit for its "lack of games".

Also, how did Nintendo get MonHun anyway? Did they send money trucks to Capcom?

It's two months old. 3DS had Pilotwings and Nintendogs at that time....

I doubt they consider the iPad a phone, though.

The thing was they weren't re-hashes of Wii games

If the 3DS launch line-up was mostly Wii hand me downs, people would've been pissed too

Problem is after looking past the VITA with all those delicious game line-up, you see 50% are just PS3 titles ported over

Uncharted/Wipeout I get, but PS3 Ports UMvsC3/Rayman/Lego"Insert Title Here"/PSN Game which is -75% less on the PSN than retail (Hi2U Dungeon Hunter: Alliance)
$12.99 0n PSN, $39.99 as retail cartridge... LOLWAT!?!

I like the VITA but I need games that keep me busy with the goddamn system, I don't want to play ports/hand me downs, I want new original content released monthly retail and bi-weekly digital

I mean how the fuck does Sony plan on making a PSP2 (VITA) by not getting software to coincide with it

You know sales would bolster the ever living shit out of the system, but nope, the 10% discount has been the only thing done so far
1 game free in Motostorm RC, but with all the add-ons/packs, it made sense to give it away as an enticement, most just balked, DL'ed the title, will wait for inevitable price drop

Are Pilotwings (3 games in 21 years) and Nintendogs (2 games in 6 years) really "well worn"?

I was just saying the 3DS lineup sucked more than the Vita's when it was 2 months old. Neither had good lineups. If you told me before launch that Virtua Tennis 4 would be my most played Vita game I would have laughed (or cried)

You know the circle pad that was made in collaboration with Capcom?
I think it was the price they had to pay to ensure the exclusives...

Oh, no question. 1st party especially, while Vita has a pretty nice 1st party lineup out the gates.

3rd party wise I think the 3DS and Vita launches are comparably mediocre.

Except Vita doesn't live in a vacuum, free from time and space. It's 3 month old lineup is against 3DS's 1 year old lineup. Developers have limited resources, with some projects on one console siphoning away support from another. Vita isn't competing with April 2011 3DS.

Or do you always compare consoles by their lineups at a relative year of their life?

From the Media Create thread.

Random fiscal year 2011 information from Famitsu:

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201204/13013138.html
http://www.famitsu.com/news/201204/17013240.html

Hardware sales up 6.9%. Software sales down 15.1%. (Units.)

Current total 3DS third party sales share at around 50%, was almost 80% near launch (everybody knows why).

PSP not dead yet, selling over 500k units of software every month. It has 7 titles in the FY top 50.

PS3 has 12 titles -- environment more desirable as development costs go down.

vitahasnogame.jpg

A bunch of stuff about social, online and mobile games that I don't care about because there are no actual sales number but it feels like I should because Famitsu is giving them bigger and bigger coverage each day.

Worldwide "traditional" gaming (software?) business estimated at US$ 26 billion; social, online and mobile games, US$ 37 billion.

PSP and Vita monthly software sales (physical only):

You must not have been around during that period where Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 were considered to be the system sellers. I guess software line up is completely subjective so you are ok to not like the Vita's but to say the Vita is resting on console ports while the 3DS never did sounds really silly to me. I don't see people putting UMvC or Rayman on thier list of reason's to buy a Vita at anywhere near the numbers of 3DS's Ocarina of Time or Star Fox.

Vita has good games.

It had a wonderful launch line up and choices.

However, none of those, at least for me, I would consider must haves. Nothing like a Mario, Mario Kart, etc. Pilot Wings and Zelda: OoT were all i needed to sell me. I bought mine on launch, I preordered from Amazon and thought it was worth every penny. I didn't give two shits about the price drop. The ambassador games were a neat surprise, but that's all they were. Even though it's a port, portable Ocarina of Time is just mind blowing to me. Portable Mario 64 with a nub instead of touch or d-pad is also another plus.

I want a Vita, but nothing I can't skip and forget is on the system and I can't think of anything that has been announced that would.

I think Gravity Daze looks very promising.

Sound shapes and gravity daze are what I'm waiting to hit. those two look slick as shit. if only sales came based on quality games, though. that hasnt been the case for a long time in this industry.

Nintendo does what Sony don't?

Nintendo has a knack for repackaging their franchises in a well timed manner to the point that people will pick them up because enough time has passed between releases. OoT is also arguably the greatest game of all time...that helps.

From a quick glance it does indeed look like the Vita is a portable PS3...and Sony are not doing much to negate this perception.

In any case I don't think anyone is surprised by the sales of Vita. I certainly didn't expect Sony to dent Nintendo in the handheld market which Nintendo has been king since 1989...

Lumines Producer: Major Vita Games in the Works

Addressing concerns about Vita's long-term health in the face of concerns around pricing, complaints about needing to purchase additional memory units, or any of the other issues that naysayers have raised, he gave a rather confident response on Sony's behalf:

"The only thing that is going to hold Sony back from succeeding with the Vita is having the right games," Mielke said. "And one of the benefits of working on the developer side in Japan is I know for a fact that they've got some games that, when they announce them, people are going to forget about all of the problems that they're imagining with the Vita."
