Is XSEED Games Going to Release Brandish: The Dark Revenant (Falcom)?

Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter
English Detective Mysteria (?)
Bakumatsu Rock (?)

Well it's (not at least for now) Bakumatsu Rock.

Even though Marvelous AQL filed a trademark for Bakumatsu Rock, a rhythm game meets visual novel set during Japan’s Bakumatsu period, the PSP game will not be released in North America.

"If Marvelous AQL registered it, that probably has to do with the anime. We don’t have any plans to do that title," said Xseed’s Executive Vice President Ken Berry to Siliconera. "Xseed is not bringing over Bakumatsu Rock. It’s like a visual novel with way too many Japanese characters to translate."

"We actually have another PSP title that we haven’t announced yet…," laughed Berry. This game isn’t The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC which was previously announced and still in development.

Seems likely their unannounced PSP game is probably this.

I like the new PSP remixes, but I'm really glad they let you select the original music too, because I have a major soft spot for the original compositions.

Fortress (original)
Fortress (remake)
If they let you switch between the two, I'm also glad the original's a choice. For the life of me, I just can't get into the newer dance-styled version. Has no appeal to me at all. The original, on the other hand... that's what I like!

PSP localizations? In 2014??? And Brandish?????? That sounds like a custom-made troll prepared specifically for me... I'll take 8! No, really, I have an irrational love for this series and Brandish 4 is one of my favorite games of all time (even if it's one of the only games I have ever played that made me legit nauseous while playing it). I would love to see them remake the other games, as I doubt very many people have gotten to play... well, any of these games. :p

If we're talking wildly improbably PSP localizations, when's Fate/Extra CCC ;_;

Well Zwei 2 is Falcom's bestest game ever, so they should probably do that one. It's already on PC too!

It's cool that this is happening though.

I piddled around with my PC-Engine Brandish in light of this news, the timing worked out that it got to be the first game to test out my Arcade Card with.

Anyway, I'll pick this up if it's true, but it seems like an odd choice. If they were going to keep dipping their toes into PSP waters in 2014, Nayuta no Kiseki might have been a better choice? I know they're sixteen games behind in the primary Kiseki series, but Nayuta is a pretty solid looking action RPG that (apparently?) only has very loose connections to the Kiseki universe.

They will go back and do this but not try to reignite Grand Knights History?

(Coming from neogaf retirement for this, since I saw hits coming to my site from here.)

Because XSEED finished the script and Vanillaware told them that they didn't have the time to insert it because of Dragon's Crown. XSEED was not at fault and did their part of the deal.

people were asking for brandish long before a nayuta was born!

Shame we'll never get the PS3/Vita Legend of Heroes games in the West. Those games look so good and honestly the Vita could use another awesome JRPG or any awesome game of any kind really.

Hydlide is better than Zwei 1.

Wow, really?! I mean, Zwei 1 isn't the best game ever or anything, but I still think it's a HELL of a lot of fun. The experience system made it fun to challenge dungeons that were way higher level than you, and the dungeon designs were quite good. I genuinely had a blast playing it.

Zwei II was okay, but it just made me want a real sequel to Gurumin.

I agree, Gurumin 2 would be amazing (Gurumin is also pretty up there in my list of favorite Falcom games of all time!), but honestly, Zwei 2 was close enough for my tastes. I absolutely loved the characters (Gallandou forever!), the story and writing were far more amazing than they had any right to be (it had sort of the opposite effect of Nayuta no Kiseki, in that the situations themselves were absolutely absurd and downright ridiculous, but the dialogue between the characters and the explanations of why these crazy things were happening was all SO WELL WRITTEN that you totally bought it without even stopping to question anything), the graphics contain easily the best 3D Falcom's ever produced, the gameplay is super-fun (I absolutely love using the Anchor Gear to grab enemies and hurl them at other enemies!) and the level designs are top notch all the way around, with cool gimmicks and cool bosses.

About the only sticking point for me is the soundtrack, which took a notable hit from Zwei 1's -- though that's not saying much, since Zwei 1's soundtrack is easily one of Falcom's best.

I just wish Zwei 2 had done a little better, as the ending very much set the stage for as many as four additional sequels, and I would've been SO down to play them all! (Though Nayuta no Kiseki is kind of like a spiritual sequel, and while I didn't much care for the story or characters in that game, I found its gameplay, level designs and bosses to be almost unmatchably glorious, and its soundtrack is one of Falcom's best of the last 10 years.)

...But, we're kind of veering off topic here! And it sounds like we're pretty much just going to have to agree to disagree on this particular game. ;)

They're pretty different. Brandish is closer to Dungeon Explorer, or... like first-person dungeon crawlers, but with a different camera angle. But still pretty different. Even the Mystery Dungeon comparison Parakeetman gave is not exactly on the mark (it's not randomized at all, for instance).

Watching videos of the game is definitely the way to go. Here's the original trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32TC07hsWgY

Wow, I hope this ends up being true! I didn't know anything about Brandish before, but watching the video you linked was enough to get me very interested. I've loved the Falcom games I've played so far (Ys: Oath in Felghana , Ys 7, Trails in the Sky and Gurumin).

There's a second trailer for it, too, that shows off a lot more gameplay:

Obviously, I can't really speak as to the nature of what was meant by my comment or anything, but it's pretty common knowledge at this point that I'm a serious Falcom fanboy, and I can definitely say without hyperbole that Brandish PSP is one of the best dungeon-crawlers I've ever played in my life. Falcom actually holds two spots on that list for me (the other being their even more obscure PC release, Dinosaur: Resurrection), and I honestly can't decide which of the two games I like more. They're both really, really good.

Not at all, I do like Zwei II, it just didn't have the crazy stunning impact on me as Falcom's other (not Kiseki) games from that glorious period did. I'll agree with you fully on the graphics thing tho, good stuff.

Hey. Can you ask Falcom when they're going to do something with Popful Mail for me?

I think I may have already at some point. ;) I would *love* to see a new Popful Mail sooooo much...

One upon a time I owned Bandish on the SNES and I remember really enjoying it. So I'd definitely buy a PSP release if XSEED were to make it so,.

I'm about to give the PC-Engine version a replay soon, I just got an Arcade Card for whatever enhancements that adds (it's just smoother cutscene animation, apparently). And I'm still trying to locate a (somewhat) affordable disc-only Sega CD copy, sigh.

I actually managed to find a nearly mint condition complete-in-box copy of Popful Mail for the Super Famicom recently, which I have set aside for whenever the RetroN-5 comes out. It will absolutely be the very first game I play on it. ;)

(I know the SFC version isn't generally as well-liked as the others, but it is notable as the only one of the three console versions to be developed by Falcom themselves rather than entrusted to a third party, so I'm REALLY curious to check it out!)

I would be incredibly tempted to physically buy a PC engine if it didn't seem like something destined to break down. It's too bad that PC Engine titles suddenly stopped being added to PSN. The last one on there is YS IV and I want to play the Xanadu games. : (

I'd suggest trying to track down a physical copy of Falcom's original Xanadu Next PC release sometime -- it comes with PC emulated versions of both Legend of Xanadu games on a separate disc (as well as a really good Xanadu series music CD!).

Wow, I had no idea the Legends of Xanadu games were included. That's a great deal. Then again, as long as I'm giving up the dream of playing these games on Vita, I might as well just buy the PC Engine games themselves and emulate them that way.

Oh, have you played and beaten Brandish VT/4? Could you tell me your thoughts about it?

I tried it quite a bit last week (both versions) and gameplay-wise it looked really well made, which suprised me because a friend of mine told me stuff like Brandish VT/4 was "a kusoge" and "Brandish 3 was the last Brandish game", all because apparently the "story is meh" and "there was no more Ares or Dela". Pretty sure it's the same deal as the Japanese fans having trouble accepting Ys Origin as a real Ys game without Adol.

Very curious about this one, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it :)

That's not how you spell Brandish 2: The Planet Buster, friend. I swear, that game is the bestest.

Speaking of Brandish 2, Castle Wall had great music! Fantastic soundtrack all around.

These "sixteen games behind in the primary Kiseki series" has nothing to do with the Kiseki series.

Nayuta no Kiseki has like 20 times more text than Brandish PSP.

Brandish PSP is much better than Nayuta no Kiseki.

Bita and voobs...its Boots and Vita...or from that forum post, awesome Brandish.

Any date on the announcement or just "soon"?

Yes yes

i am well educated on what happened. I only bring it up to kick up dust and keep the memory alive

The work was done. Dragons Crown is done. Time to REMIND Vanillaware of this awesome game they seem to have forgotten!

CMON TOM!

All joking aside I am pretty sure I saw an article that says Vanillaware is working on a new IP with a more Japanese influence (as opposed to the western themed dragons crown)

ANYWAYS. Back to Brandish. Awesome if its coming. Keep the PSP games coming. Especially if they are easy money. I will keep buying them!

No seriously in addition to the prior posts they don't even have the Japanese servers running anymore. The game's dead, it needs a port to a more relevant platform to be worth releasing now.

Yes I know

I am just venting bro :p

Would love to see Vanillaware make a sequel to this on Vita

Pretty sure they are doing something new though. UGH loved what I played of just the offline mode...

Falcom or not, the PC-Engine port appears to be as close to the original as possible with just the right upgrades; better color use, animated and voiced cutscenes scenes and CD audio.

And as much of a Falcom dork that I am, Popful Mail in Monster World (aka the Sega CD version) really stomps a mudhole in the original. Not that the original is bad, of course, but Monster World is the best video game series not called Dragon Quest and the marriage is absolutely bliss. *heart swoons*

I should get the Super Famicom version as well, but it does seem to be the weak link. But we should all know by now that being the Falcom developed version of one of their games doesn't necessarily mean it's the best (*cough*celceta*cough*).

I would be incredibly tempted to physically buy a PC engine if it didn't seem like something destined to break down. It's too bad that PC Engine titles suddenly stopped being added to PSN. The last one on there is YS IV and I want to play the Xanadu games. : (
Video game consoles before that frail thing called PlayStation are surprisingly resilient.

If you are interested in getting a PC-Engine, go for a Duo-R (or RX), most of them are still in great working order.

And hobbyists have taken up the mantle on providing repair services for common issues and adding RGB options for modern displays.

NeoGAF's PC-Engine community is a great hang as well:

XSEED never announced the non-Falcom Steam game they teased last year *rabble rabble rabble*
I'm sad to see that XSEED kind of missed out the last good year of Steam visibility (aka the Greenlight flood and the upcoming open publishing). They're still big enough and offer a generally unique product for the marketplace that they'll probably still get decent spotlight coverage from Valve, but there's no denying that it'll be harder to be noticed now.

I'm also worried that the (assumed) amount of resources being put into TitS could affect future Falcom releases if FC/SC don't manage to return. That could just be maddening paranoia though.. and my incresingly rabid desire to see English versions of Ark of Napishtim, Xanadu Next, Dinosaur Resurrection, Gurumin and Zwei II on Steam with all the fixins and I'm a petty man that is (probably wrongfully) blaming Trails for all of them not being available yet.

I'm not sure they are actually included anymore. At the very least, when I imported my copy a year or two ago it did not have any extras. Just the game and the massive instruction manual.

I might be mistaken, but I recall that tease making it sound like it wouldn't be far off. It's been like 7 months now, I'm wondering if something went awry with that one. Kind of like Brandish the first time.

Yep PC-Engine is a reliable little thing the only part that has problems is the cd attachments and that was caused by a gear that is made out of weak plastic. Easily repaired if you know the proper steps but yeah the Duo-R and RX fix all of those problems. Also really happy to see all the Gurumin love I bought that sucker brand new years ago and I even still have the preorder book such a good game.

And on topic Shinovi and Brandish would be pretty awesome to get.

Yeah, they said they'd have to wait till later in the year to say anything (the interview was back in October of last year). Due to how he phrased it as being perfect to announce that month, the only thing I could figure was Corpse Party, but I couldn't recall if there was a PC version.
