Anyone who trying to legislate religion based laws does not deserve a seat and deserves to be undemocratically dethroned and jailed.

I have a fondness for the classics

“Those who use religion for their own benefit are detestable. We are against such a situation and will not allow it. Those who use religion in such a manner have fooled our people; it is against just such people that we have fought and will continue to fight.”

Defiant Turkish PM Erdogan urges end to protests

Some of his supporters chanted: "Let us go, let's crush Taksim."

However, Mr Erdogan urged them to "go home" peacefully.

"You have remained calm, mature and showed common sense," he said. "We're all going to go home from here."

"They say I am the prime minister of only 50%. It's not true. We have served the whole of the 76 million from the east to the west,"

Still looking for a full translation, he spoke quite a while and not everything seemed to be to the liking of his support.

The only way you can get this is a restricted franchise- which I am starting to support- limit the vote to military veterans/equivalent service and those with college degrees from public universities.

And the Ministry of Truth in Turkey continues, 6 Turkish newspaper carrying the same headline today, an Erdogan quote which so far has no sources, he is supposed to have said it during his return airport speech but seems to have been left out.

Erdogan: “I'd lay down my life for Democratic demands”

90s Erdogan: “Democracy is a train from which you get off once you reach the station.”

Or is this the press crying for help, trying to expose they lost control?

Ugh

Such blatant manipulation of the free press is really shattering my idea of how first world Turkey truly is. Disgusting.

This happens in more countries. Even in a "free" country as The Netherlands. I think they are getting their news from the same news agency source. Like most buy their news from Reuters.

Everybody gets their news from the same agencies, point is newspapers might choose what to put on their frontpage.

He really was 100 years ahead of his time, even in terms of the western world. I'm trying to imagine someone turning Ireland into a secular Republic in the 1900's and I just can't see it happening.

I had a vacation planned with family in Istanbul before all this happened (will be there on 10th). Is it still safe to travel there? Can someone who is in Istanbul let me know how things are? We will be mostly visiting the tourist areas in the old town and maybe take a day tour to some other places outside of Istanbul. Any info in this regard will be greatly appreciated. You can PM me if needed.

Quoting myself again since I got not even 1 response...thanks TurkGAF :/

Istanbul is apparently relatively calm, however, if you're travelling to Ankara or any of the other major cities, be careful. From what I hear the conflicts between protestors and police are as strong as ever in Kizilay.

Ruling AKP to hold two mass rallies in Istanbul and Ankara next week

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has decided June 8 to hold two mass rallies as a response to the protests that spread all across the country over the demolition of Gezi Park at the heart of Istanbul. Following a meeting of the party’s Central Decision and Executive Council (MKYK) in Istanbul June 8, two “unity and solidarity” rallies have been scheduled next week.

A rally in Ankara will be hold on June 15, and another one in Istanbul will take place on June 16. The party executives, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who have reportedly discussed extensively about the events that led the protests to grow, aim to call for unity and also shown their strength during the rallies.

I can't imagine how this could backfire, let's take a wild guess which side the Police will be on.

Unity, Solidarity and the Destruction of Gezi park... yeh I don't see a conflict at all. Say summer holiday at schools in Turkey starts next week doesn't it? that's a smart moment to escalate matters.

Right out of the 2009 Iranian election playbook.

Expect many buses from outside of the city to be on the roads of Istanbul that day.

I thought it was important to bump this thread considering riot police are storming Taksim Square right now. This is fucked up as the government was giving mixed signals (while Erdogan said he had little tolerance for the protests, he also agreed to meet with some of the Taksim protest organizers). This is a huge escalation.

BBC said:
Turkish riot police have entered Istanbul's Taksim Square, where anti-government protesters have been staging demonstrations for close to two weeks.

Hundreds of officers have been using tear gas and water cannon to disperse activists.

The move comes after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to meet the protest organisers on Wednesday.

The unrest was sparked by a police crackdown on a local protest over an Istanbul park.

The protests then widened, with demonstrators accusing Mr Erdogan's government of becoming increasingly authoritarian and trying to impose conservative Islamic values on a secular state.

Backed by armoured vehicles, police wearing helmets and carrying shields gathered around the square early on Tuesday.

They then began to move past barricades erected by protesters.

The BBC's Mark Lowen, who is in the square, says it is a deliberate show of force.

The demonstrations are now in their 12th day, with activists controlling much of Taksim Square.

The unrest was sparked after police moved to suppress environmental protests over the redevelopment of Gezi Park, which is part of Taksim Square, on 31 May.

More than 5,000 people have been injured and three people have died since the protests began.

Am I exaggerating when I say this is the collapse of a pretend democracy? The mask has fallen off now.

When defending somebody who is accused of breaking the law becomes a crime...
Maybe some can take it as a good sign that AKP doesn't control all of the civil court judges but this serves as a direct intimidation to them as well.

Ouf.. Not a good look.

Erdogan needed to come out day 1, walk into the park himself and start discussions with the OG protesters. This has become something else altogether.

If I was a Turkish citizen today's escalation would have made me drop everything and join them. Hope actual citizens feel the same.

Erdogan has consistently demonized all demonstrators, calling them looters, terrorists, and implying they are anti-Islam, this is the only narrative the mainstream TV and newspaper are covering.

Turkey's Erdogan warns patience with protests will run out (lol calling it patience, yeh when police cracked down on 30 environmentalists)
Thousands waved red Turkish flags and shouted Allahu Akbar (God Is Greatest) as he accused protesters of attacking women wearing headscarves and desecrating mosques by taking beer bottles into them.

They have taken the path of trying to exploit divisions which aren't even there, essentially trying to fabricate them by inciting hostilities between groups who had no conflict (a Muslim Brotherhood formula). Sadly for him Demonstrators are truly a representative of all of Turkish society so he can't deceive those already involved anymore:

Many citizens who only get their news from 'official' sources will side with the government regardless because they've been told the opposition is threatening them.

11 June, 2013 - Twitter lies deadlier than car bombs: Ruling party official
“A tweet containing lies and slander is much more dangerous that a vehicle loaded with a bomb. The explosion of a vehicle loaded with a bomb would be limited, but a tweet filled with lies and slander can lead to a climate of conflict. If the situation is serious, necessary precautions must be taken,”

Worse than terrorists, this is what they are aiming for. This comes exactly a month after The Reyhanlı car bombs in Turkey which killed 52 people and injured 140.

An attack which AKP tried to cover up no less:
Gendarmerie officer arrested, accused of leaking secret documents incriminating al-Qaeda of the Reyhanlı terrorist attacks

30 minutes after it happened they blamed the Syrian government while police knew al-Qaeda was operating in Turkey and planning attacks.

thank you guys so much for carrying the thread. situation is ridiculous here.
there have been protests every day since day one, in all major cities. many people are injured and/or arrested. media continues to be a joke.

recently erdogan started having his own rallies with his own supporters, saying things like "they don't have the power to stop us, we will destroy that park.", "we planted 2 billion 800 million (2.800.000.000) trees over the course of 10 years (over 750.000 trees everyday when you do the math), we like nature.". the adherent media made a lot of fuss about it, saying things like "hundreds of thousands rush to the airport to welcome erdogan!"
hundreds of thousands (the channel belongs to the son of mayor of ankara, who is very close friends with erdogan.):

i have friends who work in the city hall, he says that they were encouraged to go to rallies. there were chants like "let us go, we will crush taksim." from his supporters. sadly, people start to hate each other. media is presenting news like "they forcefully entered mosques! they drank beer, they didn't take their shoes off! they are disrespectful!". one report (even though it is on a website which is extremely biased in favour of erdogan) said "there weren't any cameras in the mosque, they could have had group sex in there!!!" [article(?) in turkish]

lawyers are being detained, here is a pretty picture:

This's been on CNN for the last couple hours, wow...
I hope people don't get hurt.

My friend and I started to count how often they mentioned Molotov cocktail on CNN, especially the Turkish officials calling in were great at it to demonize the demonstrators. So I decided to look it up, yep that's what anarchism looks like alright.

Arresting the lawyers is outrageous.

I would want to join the protests too after all that's happened.

This whole situation has been handled so badly.

Racist Remark by PM Erdoğan Party Group Address 2013-06-11
According to them we don't know anything about politics. According to them we don't know anything about art, theater, cinema, paintings, poetry.

According to them we don't know anything about aesthetics, architecture. According to them, we are an uneducated, ignorant, lower-class mob that needs to make do with what they are given, in other words, a "black" mob. Believe me, they have always seen it this way. And today, they still view us with the same gaze, same eyes, same mentality.

He uses the word Zenci, which according to google means: black, African, coloured, spade, buck, blackie, crow, and some 'n' words.

It's time the Turkish army steps in as it's always had to do, to safeguard Turkey's tradition of secularism.

Does the Army still have enough old liners in power to start a coup?

I think they got purged a few years ago, so as much as this is the best result right now, I don't see it happening.

There absolutely no reason for a coup. Please like you are fucked up. A coup means economy going back 20 years. But fucked up people like that shit. AKP is chosen by the people. If you don't like that then maybe you should move to another country because your thinking differs from AKP.

No.

The Turks are dumb. Turkey has mostly prospered thus far under the current government which has made sensible decisions with regards to Arab Spring, treatment of Syrian refugees and its welfare support.

They even had good ties with Israel (Israel then proceeded to fuck that relationship up).

A coup would fuck the country up and instability for Turkey would instability for ME (more that it already is).

Edit: The way the government has handled this however, is disgusting.

Democracy does not mean the majority (which AKP isn't even) get's to rule over the minority, does not mean the elected can control the media and does not mean they can silence the minority.

Yeah just because they didn't vote for you doesn't mean you can just fuck them over for whatever. Imagine if the Obama administration had a sudden "fuck Mississipi" plan.

Arresting lawyers now? Awful.

Read this. Economy getting fucked at this moment because of some freedom bullshit and a lousy park. Stupid stupid people.

edit: You know what. I hope that the econonomy goes to shit. That Turkey gets money bills with 6 zeros again. I really hope this. Then maybe then CHP will get chosen and you will have your "freedom" but no money to enjoy your "freedom". Go go Turkish freedom fighters.

You know that you have been brainwashed when the stability of the economy is more important to you than the lives of the people exercising their basic rights. You do not just do inhumane shit like this and get away with it cause "the economy is fine".

Who says that you are not the one who is brainwashed? Maybe we are all brainwashed or maybe none of us is brainwashed. With good economy comes freedom. I never had the feeling i wasn't free in Turkey. If buying alcohol after 22:00 in a store is against your freedom then i don't know anymore. If removing a park is againt your freedom then i don't know anymore either. But there are even people that think that a coup is freedom.

So what we've (long) established and (in your words) finally confirmed is you don't know shit.

Check.
