The PM has landed in Istanbul! Just came out of the airport, possibly going to give a speech.
Can't they just umm...vote him out next elections?Last I looked it was still primarily against the prime minister and his stubbornness.
I have a fondness for the classicsAnyone who trying to legislate religion based laws does not deserve a seat and deserves to be undemocratically dethroned and jailed.
Defiant Turkish PM Erdogan urges end to protests“Those who use religion for their own benefit are detestable. We are against such a situation and will not allow it. Those who use religion in such a manner have fooled our people; it is against just such people that we have fought and will continue to fight.”

Some of his supporters chanted: "Let us go, let's crush Taksim."
However, Mr Erdogan urged them to "go home" peacefully.
"You have remained calm, mature and showed common sense," he said. "We're all going to go home from here."
"They say I am the prime minister of only 50%. It's not true. We have served the whole of the 76 million from the east to the west,"

And the Ministry of Truth in Turkey continues, 6 Turkish newspaper carrying the same headline today, an Erdogan quote which so far has no sources, he is supposed to have said it during his return airport speech but seems to have been left out.

90s Erdogan: Democracy is a train from which you get off once you reach the station.
Or is this the press crying for help, trying to expose they lost control?
Ugh
Such blatant manipulation of the free press is really shattering my idea of how first world Turkey truly is. Disgusting.
This happens in more countries. Even in a "free" country as The Netherlands. I think they are getting their news from the same news agency source. Like most buy their news from Reuters.

I had a vacation planned with family in Istanbul before all this happened (will be there on 10th). Is it still safe to travel there? Can someone who is in Istanbul let me know how things are? We will be mostly visiting the tourist areas in the old town and maybe take a day tour to some other places outside of Istanbul. Any info in this regard will be greatly appreciated. You can PM me if needed.
The Revolution has evolved, I present you the New Generation of counter-tear gas measures.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has decided June 8 to hold two mass rallies as a response to the protests that spread all across the country over the demolition of Gezi Park at the heart of Istanbul. Following a meeting of the party’s Central Decision and Executive Council (MKYK) in Istanbul June 8, two “unity and solidarity” rallies have been scheduled next week.
A rally in Ankara will be hold on June 15, and another one in Istanbul will take place on June 16. The party executives, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who have reportedly discussed extensively about the events that led the protests to grow, aim to call for unity and also shown their strength during the rallies.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-22851765BBC said:Turkish riot police have entered Istanbul's Taksim Square, where anti-government protesters have been staging demonstrations for close to two weeks.
Hundreds of officers have been using tear gas and water cannon to disperse activists.
The move comes after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to meet the protest organisers on Wednesday.
The unrest was sparked by a police crackdown on a local protest over an Istanbul park.
The protests then widened, with demonstrators accusing Mr Erdogan's government of becoming increasingly authoritarian and trying to impose conservative Islamic values on a secular state.
Backed by armoured vehicles, police wearing helmets and carrying shields gathered around the square early on Tuesday.
They then began to move past barricades erected by protesters.
The BBC's Mark Lowen, who is in the square, says it is a deliberate show of force.
The demonstrations are now in their 12th day, with activists controlling much of Taksim Square.
The unrest was sparked after police moved to suppress environmental protests over the redevelopment of Gezi Park, which is part of Taksim Square, on 31 May.
More than 5,000 people have been injured and three people have died since the protests began.
If I was a Turkish citizen today's escalation would have made me drop everything and join them. Hope actual citizens feel the same.
Thousands waved red Turkish flags and shouted Allahu Akbar (God Is Greatest) as he accused protesters of attacking women wearing headscarves and desecrating mosques by taking beer bottles into them.
A tweet containing lies and slander is much more dangerous that a vehicle loaded with a bomb. The explosion of a vehicle loaded with a bomb would be limited, but a tweet filled with lies and slander can lead to a climate of conflict. If the situation is serious, necessary precautions must be taken,
This's been on CNN for the last couple hours, wow...
I hope people don't get hurt.

Am I exaggerating when I say this is the collapse of a pretend democracy? The mask has fallen off now.

When defending somebody who is accused of breaking the law becomes a crime...
Maybe some can take it as a good sign that AKP doesn't control all of the civil court judges but this serves as a direct intimidation to them as well.

According to them we don't know anything about politics. According to them we don't know anything about art, theater, cinema, paintings, poetry.
According to them we don't know anything about aesthetics, architecture. According to them, we are an uneducated, ignorant, lower-class mob that needs to make do with what they are given, in other words, a "black" mob. Believe me, they have always seen it this way. And today, they still view us with the same gaze, same eyes, same mentality.
It's time the Turkish army steps in as it's always had to do, to safeguard Turkey's tradition of secularism.
Does the Army still have enough old liners in power to start a coup?

AKP is chosen by the people. If you don't like that then maybe you should move to another country because your thinking differs from AKP.
Read this. Economy getting fucked at this moment because of some freedom bullshit and a lousy park. Stupid stupid people.
You know that you have been brainwashed when the stability of the economy is more important to you than the lives of the people exercising their basic rights. You do not just do inhumane shit like this and get away with it cause "the economy is fine".
Who says that you are not the one who is brainwashed? Maybe we are all brainwashed or maybe none of us is brainwashed. With good economy comes freedom. I never had the feeling i wasn't free in Turkey. If buying alcohol after 22:00 in a store is against your freedom then i don't know anymore. If removing a park is againt your freedom then i don't know anymore either. But there are even people that think that a coup is freedom.
