It's been 5 years since the last console ZELDA was revealed. Is it time for another?

Am I the only one that doesn't want Nintendo to announce another Zelda?

Franchise needs another year off. Make me want to anticipate it like they did Ocarina and Twilight Princess, and not indifferent like....every other Zelda.
With the DS one coming out I could wait until November 2010 for a Wii one very easily. Hell, I could probably wait until November 2011.

If it wasn't for all the Zelda threads on GAF I'd probably be a lot more impatient than that.

You are not the only one. Another year would be perfect. This year is too early and 2011 would seem a little late, especially the series' pension for delays.

How can you say you were anticipating Twilight Princess more than you would be a new Zelda? TP was announced less than a year after Wind Waker was released. It's been nearly 3 years since Twilight Princess released. I've waited long enough, I want to at least see a teaser as to what the new, built from the ground up Wii version of Zelda will look like.

The DS one is at the top of my DO WANT list at the moment, if only because it looks to be a new Link with a new background story and origins, possibly a prequel to WW or a sequel to TP.

If they can take the ideas they put into PH and expand on them, it could be the greatest handheld Zelda ever.

I dunno... TP felt more closed than any Zelda game I've played yet =/
How so? It had more to do in its world than any of the other Zelda games. The only problem with it's over world that I found was that it's main town was more of a hub than a true, interactive area.

I dunno, it just felt kinda linear? I can't remember anything standing out from Hyrule Field, but that might be more to do with the fact that I know every OOT quest and sidequest like the back of my hand, and I still haven't done a 100% runthrough of TP.

Like in what ways? Side stories with Zelda/Sheik or like non-traditional Zeldas that arent Action Adventures but some other genre?

They would be action/adventures but the focus wouldn't be on Link himself and his quest to save Zelda. It would be a creative way to expand the series and Hyrule's richness without binding it to the same adventure. They could easily try new concepts and introduce new ideas in these game and see if they are worthy to be put in the main Zelda games. For example, one game can focus on co-op or combat play in Hyrule during a War.

And I would like a side story game about Zelda/Sheik with Impa as her mentor showing her the ways of the Sheikah while you explore a dangerous Hyrule or something. And I'm sure Impa could teach us a lot about Hyrule's past too.

Again, just ideas.

Simple. Twilight Princess satisfied pretty much everything I look for in a Zelda game. I'm still happy with it. If Nintendo announces it at E3, I hope we don't get it until 2011. Anything sooner is just...too soon. I'd rather see a new franchise, or a true sequel to Star Fox, or...anything. But constant badgering from Nintendo fans on a new Mario or new Zelda starts to get grating, especially when we get games like Wind Waker which are simply good, or Phantom Hourglass, which is all around bad.

People have thrown those ideas around for a while now, not exactly what I personally am looking for, but theyre a lot better than people asking for Zelda steampunk or Zelda in the future, so I wouldnt be completely against them. As the series stands right now though I dont know how such gaiden games would fit in, context wise.

The timeline and lore are so loose and inconsistent, basically being just a patchwork of incongruous games, that side stories such as these, which really require an existing plot to branch off from in order to succeed, dont have a lot of solid ground to stand on.

Like has been said TP was a GC game at heart.

Nintendo has been stewing on the next Zelda for years. They have known Motion+ was getting the green light for more than a year so that has been in the pot. Would they move forward with a games basic architecture without the core mechanics of the waggle settled on? You'd seem to be pushing your luck when Motion+ could be a huge trickle down with it being a game changer.

Steampunk Zelda or bust!
So basically, you want Spirit Tracks to have Deku muskets :P

As it is, TP has some impressive archimedean machinery and they certainly have knowledge of both cannons and gunpowder (though I'm not certain they'd be used as weapons per se). I just don't see how a Zelda game could possibly be steampunk and still be a Zelda game.

Zelda is about mystery and exploring forests, caves and mountains to uncover long-lost temples and labyrinths. It's about a boy who starts off with little more than his wits taking on an ancient and overwhelmingly powerful evil. It's basically the David vs Goliath story told in installments/episodes (dungeons/quests).

When I think of a Zelda set in a modern era (electricity et al) where the dungeons are hidden deep under the modern metropolis known as Hyrule, I always have to wonder how he would not become hugely overpowered thanks to modern weaponry or out of place with a sword and bow. Even if you replace his bow with a muzzle-loading carbine or musket, you still have the problem of how stupid he'd look with a sword out in the streets of a modernised Hyrule.

I used to think like this too, and was very against the idea of trying to modernize the franchise or make it steampunk or whatever. However, thinking about it now... I really don't care. If it's fun and it brings something fresh to the series, I'm all for it. And honestly, I think you could even handle the classic elements of the game such as Link's traditional outfit in a way that works.

Could you imagine essentially a steampunk or modern/future Zelda set in an open world big city with your various (updated) tools like the hookshot, boomerang, etc. and secrets hidden everywhere? That would truly be something if combined with typical Zelda dungeon quality.

so hai gaf I have this friend and he's been known to be psychic. He had a dream about a new Zelda last night and this is what he came up with:

Link's town has been set on fire by Bokoblins. Link (adult Link, at that), is unconscious because he has been throw off a small cliff by the Bokoblins. Epona jumps in to save the day and carries Link off to safety. Graphical style is similar to TP, and is set in a fantasy Hyrule, no steampunk.

Take that as you will O.o

Ah, Aonuma's Twilight Princess.

Different enough that I'd really want to play it one day.

There are quite a few more pictures that I didn't have time to find again and post. I'd really love to play all the versions of Twilight Princess that Nintendo has sitting on their harddrives, one day.

A few more:

Nice try, but after what happened with Kid Icarus last year, my hype levels are going to remain absolutely stable until I see something official from Nintendo.

In AOPM we trust!
Well, we at least know AOPM's sources are good. Thing is, you never know with Nintendo. Doesn't everyone remember what happened to Kagari last year?

Also, holy Error 500 batman! This place is creaking under the pressure.

I need to emphasize this. Not only is Nintendo unpredictable, but my source knows about the new Zelda, but doesn't have concrete info about tomorrow's presentation.

Still, i wish i get 3/3 with this.

Doesn't Matt usually give us a little hint of something the night before the press conference?

I think I'd like a real hint next year, instead of fake stuff. The guy needs to improve his relationship with Nintendo. They're a small company being pulled by all sides, I don't think being yet another douche under the radar will quite work at this juncture.

I had the same thought but as you know, Nintendo isn't Microsoft. I'd be shocked if they changed anything within a 24h period because another company did something. Basically it either was on the cards or it wasn't.

We'll find out.

Man, it's a good thing the rest of GAF thinks this thread is safe to ignore. The sheer amounts of EXCITE, hopium and pure hype I'm feeling right now is unbearable. And I consider myself one of the calm ones.

I feel like I'm sitting right in front of this, starring at the sign, waiting for the show tomorrow, expecting the worst...

Didn't Gametrailers come out a while ago and basically tell us that we'd see a new Zelda trailer at E3? Not exactly earth shattering surprise there. Everyone knows its coming.

i had a dream about the zelda wii last night.

it was cel shaded and had "sword" in the title

im not kidding :\

He didn't last year, but that was probably because they put the kabosh on Kid Icarus' debut.

Someone with an IGN Insider account would be able to see it (or anyone, since IGN opened their boards up... I think...)

I still think we won't see Zelda Wii tomorrow. If we get a trailer, I'll take a week ban gladly.

Hmm... I don't post this type of stuff on GAF, really, but my organizer friend at ESA was completely spot on about the Microsoft announcements so I am gonna post this on GAF of what I've been told. This guy works as an organizer with ESA so he sometimes sees and overhears information about the companies.

Supposedly last night a mysterious disc arrived to Los Angeles from Nintendo Corporate to NA. The disc was heavily guarded you could say, and it seems NOA wasn't even sure what it was. Take it how you will =)

And I am seriously, I swear to god, Allah, Buddah, Luffy, not bullshitting you. I don't wanna create false hopes (Pff... maybe its a Mario Party Online game!), but if there is this secrecy involved, AND it seems NOA didn't even know about it... it must be something big.

That raises my hopes and I have to use all my willpower to crush them pre-emptively so that I don't get let down. :lol

Fantastic, if not for the fact I'm pretty sure we are all finding out tomorrow whether we are seeing a new zelda or not.

I love this kind of stuff:lol :lol

That's why i can't be really sure about the Zelda announcement. With Nintendo, not a lot of people are really sure about these things, except from the obvious big guns. Sometimes they themselves even don't know!

Judging from my source though, i have really big hopes for tomorrow.

Let's see!

I think I should leave GAF. Between this and the "CG Mario poster" my adrenaline is starting up a little. I'm getting... hopeful.

I can't. I need to go in thinking it's going to be the worst shit possible. Ravi Drums Part Deux. More Cammy Cards. Only New Play Control games. I. Need. To. Stop. The. Hype.

So, until tomorrow night (or later, if it is shown), I bid you adieu.
