Valve doesn't leak something unless they want to leak something so Im calling BS.
All though a more open Half Life 3 would make sense if they got streaming working in source.
Yeah, no. Especially if it's supposed to be riddled with side quests. How the hell do you that with the story of HL. Mankind is facing its biggest threat but hold on some prick wants to bring him X number of Y before he gives you whatever you need to save everybody's ass.
My opposition to an open world Half-Life game comes from the fact that it would take level design, one of my favorite aspects of the series, and throw it out the window because all of the interesting locations now have to be readily accessible from some generic, blobby "overworld" and also have to be completely re-usable. That's just depressing.
I thought that Valve didn't make single player games any more? But the modding scene on elder scrolls might convince them that they could put some sort of market for hats into an open world HL3 making it interesting for them.
But open world does not mean interesting non linear level design. An open world is an open world. Most dungeons in elder scrolls games are extremely linear and cookie cutter.
The actual statement was far more ambiguous:
The Final Hours of Portal 2 said:Today the industry is abuzz about Facebook games and mobile games on devices like the iPad. Valve has neither. But online gameplay, like the co-operative campaign in Portal 2, will surely be important in the future. In fact, Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience. What this all means is something Newell is still trying to figure out, but he knows Valve needs to continually innovate by placing both short- and long-term bets.
Open world half-life with quests? No thanks.
As the thread title says, this is purely a rumor and it should be treated as such. Nevertheless, it should be fun to speculate on how an open-world Half-Life 3 would work. French gaming site Journal Du Gamer claims to have insider information on Half-Life 3's new direction. Here are some (Google-translated) tidbits:
You can read the whole (again, google-translated) article here.
Half-Life 3 an open-world game! What do you think people?
why not a new ip? you can do it gaben
Sounds like a BG&E mixed with HL3. Sounds amazing.
I don't know what it means for a game like Half Life to be open world. It's like saying Uncharted will be open world, how would you even do that?
I want to believe.
Half-life 3 open world.
Lead designer: Doug Church. A man who *knows* how to handle open world games.
The mighty spirit of Looking Glass will live once again in Valve.
*manly tears looking at the sunset*
