Judgement Day: Too Human Demo Up Now!

drohne said:
this result was entirely predictable from the moment they announced right-stick melee controls -- which will never work -- and showed that absurd slidey battle animation. a combat game that neither feels good nor looks cool is doomed. dyack's managed to produce a game that refutes his own warnings against judging games prematurely
thats the sad part about the whole thing

his warnings are justified... his product might not be...

Okay guys, I survived the demo! Whew, over an hour of gameplay, pretty good value for a free demo. I went through every corner of the demo, and tried out everything so I don't think there's anything left that I missed. Doubt I'll be playing it again.

if the game is 10 hours long, did you just play through 1/10th of the game?

One cool thing to do is work up the right side of the skill tree until you get the spider turret. If you deploy that and start air launching enemies it will keep them juggled till they die or it runs out. Recharge time is too slow, though.

I believe it has to be higher than 55%.
Yeah, the Metacritic numbers are...

53% Lair
55% Haze
92% Eternal Darkness

IMO, any game starts at 5/10. Genre doesn't affect your score unless you invent a completely new one or redefine an existing one. Simple competency doesn't raise your score. Greatness is what raises it. Mistakes lower it.

Based on my reading of this thread, Too Human has it's share of competency, you might like it if you like the genre, maybe it has some innovation, and it has some clear mistakes. It might actually hit what I described as the epic fail point (being lower than Lair). I didn't expect that.

(Note: I myself would be proud to make a 5/10 game, but I would never have set myself up for failure like Denis did.)

Likely.

And if the first hour is indicative of the other 9, you might as well just play the demo 9 more times.

One of the most repetitive games I've ever played.

Did that many of you really not take the time to look at the Advanced Combat controls in the menu? The combat is only just holding the right stick in one direction if you want it to be.

That's what I'm wondering too. I read all the controls in the menus and tried out a lot of moves and stuff. The problem is that the entire stick mechanic just isn't fun.

I looked at it.....there was nothing to see there. Tried all kind of combinations of tapping and holding of the two sticks and it was still medicore at best. "Stick fighting" just doesn't feel right.

They're "Bringing it Home" for me. Use a free 3-day Gold sub this week or something.

there's no free gold. with free codes all you get is the ability to play online but your account remain silver, which means that you can't download shit.

btw, i'll never understand this one week delay on demos for silver users. a demo is something that should help sell a game, you give the player a chance to try your product and decide if it's worth buying. it's good for players and for publishers.
i bought many games this gen that i wasn't even interested in after playing the demo, Bioshock being one of them.

but then again, just my 2c

:)

Yeah, I can certainly see that being the problem for a lot of people.

Eternal Darkness is a master piece.. Its hard for any developer to reach that quality...

Id say that SK has to consider this as a failure if it cant reach the numbers of Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes..

The game was partly developed by them with heavy influences of Kojima and his teams on the cutscenes (which was actually the main critique of the game but whatever)

By the way is this demo worth a 48 hours gold membership voucher..? I cant download it.. but i could in 1 week right..?

I tried out lots of stuff, but most of it is ruined by the constant ice skating. I'm conditioned to consider movement like that a product of really bad animation or really bad lag.

I'm getting use to the controls and I'm warming up to it more. I didn't want to strike the game down from one demo session and so far I'm getting different types of loot. The combat is getting pretty fun, I dropped the swords and I'm using the Hammer/Mallet now and I get so much juggles and stuns now. :lol

Just finished. The demo isn't terrible. The camera does need some work (read: serious issues) and sometimes the combat can be annoying, but once I got my combo meter up to 3 it started getting a lot more fun. I had some extremely significant problems with the guns, as the targeting for them is not very easy to understand at all. Hope that gets some work because as it stands it was pretty difficult to tank the minibosses, especially one of them in a challenge room (since they have energy shields that for some reason only have a 'health' bar when you're using ballistics. Why that decision was made is beyond me, because its pretty fuckin' stupid), as your attacks seemingly do nothing until the shield is down, and its way safer to take it down with guns...if you can get them to hit the guy. After reading the impressions here, I went in thinking it was going to be awful, but instead it was just okay. Not spectacular, but I might up the game at retail.

Edit: I would also like to mention that not including coop for this demo was a horrible decision, and I think that would have made a huge difference.

I did, but none of it was practically useful during the demo. Maybe later on in the game.

I thought the music was great and the few non-Borg environments looked really cool. I like the concept of making flashbacks playable but I don't get some aspects of that. If I play a flashback and pick up items, shouldn't I have had them all along?!?

Ranged combat is great when it works. Melee combat sucks balls but I guess you don't have to use it if you don't get swarmed while unloading you guns.

As with Assassin's Creed the repetition didn't bother me at all. Maybe I'm resistant :lol

Yeah, I couldn't get the guns to track at all, but I might have misread the onscreen help in terms of targeting.

I saw people saying this so many times with heavenly sword too. In my opinon if you give the player an easy option in the game it's more than likely they'll stick with that. So I doubt a lot of people will be digging into the system or replaying this game after they've done it once.

That was the one really annoying thing that struck me in the game. Interrupting combat areas with playable cutscenes. I was just getting used to punching things.

Completely agree. Demos are supposed to help attract people to buy games and yet they keep people away from them at the peak of their hype, when they come out. I often times forget about a demo when I can't DL it instantly (though thankfully I didn't do that w/ Civ Rev, great game). It's just a dumb policy.

Don't forget that you can fire both guns at once and target different creatures. Once you figure out how it picks targets for you based upon where the enemies are at and the orientation of your character it isn't too hard to shoot at what you want to. The only real problem is running away and wanting it to instantly target the mobs behind you when you start shooting like other games will do.

Leaving co-op out of the demo was a really, really bad idea. What is otherwise boring and repetitious gameplay becomes fun when you start comparing moves and equipment over voicechat.

Hey I just did a melee in air juggle. whee. Course i'm level 2 atm so it it didn't last long :P. Try this on those harder goblins.

edit: Just did it on a rocket goblin. Yea, it's a kill move if you catch them mid-air, well with the hp these current goblins have at this level anyway. sent it up, used the gun to juggle, then walked closer, and jumped. then melee'd 3 or 4 times till it died.

I wanna make this move second nature lol.

For those who are taking the time out to give detailed impressions, thanks. Can I ask for feedback to specifically cover how much of the depth of the control scheme you guys are investigating? Seems like there's a mixture of positive impressions (mostly off GAF :P) and extremely negative feedback here. It sounds like many people booted it up, pointed the right stick only, had a chuckle at Dennis, and posted online about how boring the game was. Then I read others about juggling, balancing, using long range weapons, finishing moves, etc, and they're very enthusiastic. Obviously it's more of the former, but then I think people love train wrecks unfortunately, and it's hard trying to get an honest impression.

The gameplay comments I hear are surprisingly similar to my first DMC4 impressions actually, before I spent a bit of time learning the game and watching vids, etc. Yes, it was my first DMC.

Anyway, I'll download tomorrow night after I finish my feelgood night watching The Bridge

Played about an hour or so. I liked the lightning effects, and the sequences when the camera was pulled out (and you weren't playing) were very nice. The melee combat is just not good. I might be interested in trying a few of the other classes, namely the bio-engineer-- or whatever else they're labeling as their generic caster class-- just to get a feel for a different playstyle. Doesn't mean I'd dive head first in a bargain bin or waste the gas on a trip to blockbuster, but hell, I'm trying to be considerate.

Good thing that demo ended, or i would be playin weell past the time i was supposed to go into work.

People complaining about the stick combat......what? Im playin Titan Quest right now, and although i love that game the combat in Too Human is much more fun. It was rather awkward at first, and i kept trying to move the camera, but just brfore that last room i started to come to grips eith it a little more and was juggling multiple enemies and gumby slide slashing through crowds of enemies and loved it. There appear to be a LOT of different attributes and stats u can customize through loot, runes, skills etc. Will play more before game hits, game will be bought day one.

like i just wrote before reading your replay that's exactly the same thing that happens to me. and when a demo is available on PSN too i usually end buying the PS3 version. go figure...

:)

Can anyone tell me if your single player character is the same as your co-op one and that you can progress through the campaign with said character. I might be interested if you can just have the one guy for both single and multi.

thanks.

The Naruto Demo will be available this thursday dumbass.

I really wish I could try this out, but don't have my 360 with me :(

There is no difference... with LIVE Gold time limited demos and Qore time limited demos you are asking users the same question: are you willing to pay to get this content now instead of waiting a few weeks?

whats with the insult, jackass.

how long has it been since Qore came out with the demo? it will be at least 2 weeks after right? well its something, but thats even worse than the Gold/Silver 1 week delay.

well i didnt know it was coming out this week, so i thought it was "pay now or get it later" vs "pay now or never get it". 2 weeks still sucks.

What's the verdict on the game so far? I'm at work and I'm wondering if I should bother downloading it when I get home. Should I give it a try or just ignore?

If you ignore the people that have no intention of giving this game a chance then the impressions have far more weight to them.

Looking forward to playing this. Made a note to expect the combat to be rubbish at first.

uh-huh. and how exactly do you know who does have some intention of giving the game a chance? The ones who say good things about the demo? Because no fair person could possibly dislike it?

The concensus is the game is mediocre but will be platable to any fan of the genre. Look, given the gaf status of the game I would download it and see for yourself, though some posters I trust (BB for one) weren't exactly enthralled.
