Judgement Day: Too Human Demo Up Now!

Wow, I want that hour of my life back. What a mediocre pile of shit! :lol
Seriously. I thought some one had slipped LSD into my Soda or something. The constant randomness of the camera combined with the lack of control over it pissed me off repeatedly. Plus the AI is dumber than dried dog shit. And the dialogue, oh god the dialogue, it made me want to burst out laughing at how fucking cheesy it was. Sorry Dyack, go back to the drawing board, cause this shit sucks.

Man can i join you on the list for getting my hour back, terrible camera, average combat, poor cut scenes, even worse dialogue and nothing special a.i.......yeah gaf got 'owned'.

You know, I just thought of this, it kinda plays like a cheap Mass Effect knockoff, melee combat, bad camera, cheesy dialogue, piss poor AI, and well, everything else aside.

So on a scale of Alone In The Dark to Call of Duty 3 (Arbitrary scale of 360 games),
1. Alone In The Dark2
2.
3.
4.
5. Ninja Gaiden 2
6.
7.
8.
9.
10. Call Of Duty 4 (I originally had "3", should have not relied on memory so early in the AM)

what ranking would most people give this game based on the demo?

Can we switch NG2 and CoD3? NG2 is a far better game...

That said, i would put it about middle of the road. Alone sucked badly, NG2 rocked me, CoD3 was fun, but nothing amazing, which is what i feel playing Too Human

But the gameplay is just embarrassing coming after Ninja Gaiden 2. I mean pressing towards to execute a melee attack? There is absolutely no involvement or satisfaction in doing so - what in the world possessed sane (and evidently) talented people to adopt this style of gameplay? Was this not playtested? Didn't anyone raise anything?

Lesson learned this generation: Don't fuck with tried and true control schemes.

pro

- some of the cinematic camera angles were well done, especially in the beginning of the demo when there was a good transition to enemies who were watching you
- loot. there seem to be a lof of drops and the runes/charms should add a bit of depth to the system
- later in the demo, as you put more points into melee, drones go down quickly and you feel a bit more powerful.

con

- animation... what the hell. I find this aspect so important when a game puts action in the forefront and it is absolutely horrible in this game. I just don't feel like the moves I pull off 'hit' the enemies, Baldur just floats around. Oftentimes I would just be in a group of enemies, hardly knowing which ones I'd hit, hoping they'd go down. Everything Baldur does looks bad: jumping, sliding, juggling, normally attacking... It's just not very fun to play with this guy.
- I don't like the menu screens. Also: I find that it takes too long to get into the equipment screen. In Diablo you have a shortcut key to get there immediately, here it takes longer.
- too many cutscenes. I started skipping over them after the second one. They're not fun or engaging to watch and this isn't a game you play for its story.
-camera can be annoying

Overall I'd say that was not a terrible demo, but I was glad when it ended, kinda had enough of Too Human for now. It's not bad, not good... but there are games out there more deservant of my time.

Maybe I'll play the demo again sometime, see if it grows on me

Thanks MS, release the Demo 30 minutes after I start work, typical.

Ah well, something to look forward to when I get home, I'll remember to shield my eyes from the firestorm here until then.

Same here, I sit down at my desk and I see them demo was released. It's the week of E3, you know the servers will be slammed this week, no chance of me even seeing this demo in action f=before midnight tonight. Major Nelson's blog you to send out text alerts to your cell phones, then sometime last year the feature mysteriously disappeared. Days like this is when I remember to look into it. I could've started the download while I was getting ready for my workday, and it could be downloading while I'm sitting here at work frothing at the mouth to sample Too Human..........

This game is gonna be like kane and lynch; if they flood the TV with commercials, it'll sell.
If so, the real question is who at GameSpot will get fired for not giving it a glowing review.

I really like the design, the story seems to be great and norse mythologi is actually awsome. Judging from the demo, I liked everything about it, except that tiny little part of games called gameplay... I just wasn't any fun at all :(

I kind of enjoyed playing this game as if it were Geometry Wars, with the pistols and such. I'd like the game more if that's all there was too it, or if the sword stuff was set to the facebuttons instead of the stick.

I was impressed with how many dudes there were to kill. It's not that there were a lot on screen, but I did enjoy knocking down waves of enemies.

The cutscenes were pretty terrible. Why was everyone so stiff? Also, it felt as if the camera was zoomed in too far. If the game isn't too graphically powerful, it's probably better to have the camera back more.

Dialog was terrible. The transition from killing dudes and the random flashback greenland cutscenes was really awkward. Greenland was really uninteresting, gameplay wise. It didn't really give you a clear idea of what you were doing there, either. (To be fair, I wasn't paying much attention)

The whole game feels very stiff. The menus lagged while navigating them, and the inventory screen is akin to Mass Effect.

Picking up loot was about as fun as picking up loot can be. I ended up with some rifle and a big hammer. Rifle grenades were simple enough to use, but it doesn't reload them for you, and doesn't really give you much of an indication of if you've already loaded one in or not.

The bosses are interesting the first time you face them, although there's no clear strategy to kill them. You really just shoot them or thwack them until their health goes away.

Leveling up is a pretty thoughtless process. You choose one of three paths, and at some point you're forced into only continuing a single path. I chose to do the firearms path, but there was no real indication that I was doing more damage or anything like that.

Unless you get knocked down, it's pretty hard to tell if you're taking damage. A red number appears on the right, but it's quickly scrolled off screen by other numbers. Enemies that throw explosives are crazy annoying, kill those guys first.

Jumping is weird. I ended up floating a lot of the times, stuck on invisible geometry. The camera is annoying. No one camera mode is any good. I almost think a top-down view would be better. It doesn't give you much control over it, because the right stick is doing wigglewhacking. Combos don't seem fleshed out, not consisting of more than "attack. Now attack again without being hit."

I wanted this game to be good, but it's not that great. I think Assassin's Creed was a better game. It's no Diablo, that's for sure. Two player coop isn't going to improve anything. I don't think four player coop would do much for it, even.

If you want Devil May Cry mixed with Geometry Wars, with really shit controls, then you might want to rent it or something. I guess.

Meh, GAF hates everything, not surprising. Played the demo for about 30 minutes. It has a few problems here and there, but nothing to detract from the fun. I'm impressed. Dyack will have my $60 next month.

That scale is epic fail

Call Of Duty 4 Game of the Year last year IMHO. (despite Bioshock).
Ninja Gaiden 2- continuation, some good advancements but not a "WOW" experience.
Alone In The Dark2- hyped but did not meet minimal expectations.
I wanted to start with a similarly hyped but disappointing game (Alone) and go up from there for a good reference.

Right, I've really played it this time. I actually think it's a good looking game, has a "God of War" feel to the scale and atmosphere in the environments. Cutscenes aren't as bad as many are making out either.

However, the story doesn't grab me in the slightest. The combat is dull. The controls are dodgy and awkward. The camera is fucking dreadful - and when you do use the trigger to reset it, instead of smoothly panning around, it just cuts it to the new view.

It feels seriously unpolished and definitely smells of a game that has been through development hell. And it has. But the graphics engine actually seems pretty strong to me, one of the only positives though.

I thought GAF liked Godhand?

How do you start a juggle? I can only get it to work if I just spin the stick around randomly. The directions show the R stick but I don't know if that means tap it in a direction or press it in. Nothing seems to work.

Combat is better than I thought, although it's still not perfect. It looks pretty good, certainly not a bad looking game. Too early to make judgements on loot and things.

Story is absolute shit and the cut scenes are woeful. The camera is beyond hideos though.

It's not a bad game, just an average one so far. Not deserving of the hate it gets here, but not deserving of any praise either.

Do a google search and see whats wrong with that statement. And if a game is GOTY despite Bioshock then isn't Bioshock GOTY?

The majority of the press picked Bioshock, COD4 is my choice.

i wonder if microsoft intentionally deployed this several hours away from their 'bringing it home' stuff -- knowing they had a bit of a stinkbomb on their hands. it'll be interesting to see how prominently too human features in their conference. iirc it was a no-show last year. and wasn't lair a no-show at sony's last conference?

your epic fail is epic. now go and sit down.

I could only play it for like 10 minutes before I had to get ready for work so I don't have any impressions except that I really don't like the ice-skating melee charge that you do for far enemies. I like the mechanic, it just looks stupid that there is no animation for it. Even Wow's goofy looking warrior charge has a more satisfying look and feel. I'd call it a nitpick except that it seems like you do it all the time.

tap twice in the direction of the mob you wish to air launch.

I like the concept of making flashbacks playable but I don't get some aspects of that. If I play a flashback and pick up items, shouldn't I have had them all along?!?

I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but WTF?

Not a deal breaker or anything, but that's just funny.

CoD4 you mean.

I know it might be atrocious i have not played it yet but there is a very very big disconnect between the consensus of Gaf and other places which includes 1up boards, IGN boards, Gamersyde forums, teamxbox forums and some others. I dont know if its the fact that Gaf hates Dyack, i dunno but reading here, it seems the focus is all on animation being atrocious and unplayable and ruins the whole game and all the other forums are focusing firstly on gameplay which they are rating from decent to very good with decent animation.

just a curious note

Shouldn't be surprising, the groupthink hate here is off the charts. It's not a bad game but it's not great either. I thought the combat was decent and the animations are ok but the camera does everything a huge disservice.

You cant start declaring games GOTY despite other games. Comeon now.

Why not? I think you really don't know what the word means. It means that in spite of the fact that <insert game> exists, it's still GOTY. It does not mean "if you don't include <insert game>. :P

Just played it, I don't like the combat, the graphics or the camera so it really is no fun for me.

You can just hold down the stick and it does everything for you, whats the fun in that?

How much did this game cost to make? I might pick it up if a friend does when it hits budget prices but i'm not paying anything like full price for what I just played in that demo.

Just woke up and saw this, I've just gone over the first page and my dl is at around 70%. Can't wait to see how this played out.

People who don't like the demo go back to sleep before posting that info on lesser forums.
