I kind of enjoyed playing this game as if it were Geometry Wars, with the pistols and such. I'd like the game more if that's all there was too it, or if the sword stuff was set to the facebuttons instead of the stick.
I was impressed with how many dudes there were to kill. It's not that there were a lot on screen, but I did enjoy knocking down waves of enemies.
The cutscenes were pretty terrible. Why was everyone so stiff? Also, it felt as if the camera was zoomed in too far. If the game isn't too graphically powerful, it's probably better to have the camera back more.
Dialog was terrible. The transition from killing dudes and the random flashback greenland cutscenes was really awkward. Greenland was really uninteresting, gameplay wise. It didn't really give you a clear idea of what you were doing there, either. (To be fair, I wasn't paying much attention)
The whole game feels very stiff. The menus lagged while navigating them, and the inventory screen is akin to Mass Effect.
Picking up loot was about as fun as picking up loot can be. I ended up with some rifle and a big hammer. Rifle grenades were simple enough to use, but it doesn't reload them for you, and doesn't really give you much of an indication of if you've already loaded one in or not.
The bosses are interesting the first time you face them, although there's no clear strategy to kill them. You really just shoot them or thwack them until their health goes away.
Leveling up is a pretty thoughtless process. You choose one of three paths, and at some point you're forced into only continuing a single path. I chose to do the firearms path, but there was no real indication that I was doing more damage or anything like that.
Unless you get knocked down, it's pretty hard to tell if you're taking damage. A red number appears on the right, but it's quickly scrolled off screen by other numbers. Enemies that throw explosives are crazy annoying, kill those guys first.
Jumping is weird. I ended up floating a lot of the times, stuck on invisible geometry. The camera is annoying. No one camera mode is any good. I almost think a top-down view would be better. It doesn't give you much control over it, because the right stick is doing wigglewhacking. Combos don't seem fleshed out, not consisting of more than "attack. Now attack again without being hit."
I wanted this game to be good, but it's not that great. I think Assassin's Creed was a better game. It's no Diablo, that's for sure. Two player coop isn't going to improve anything. I don't think four player coop would do much for it, even.
If you want Devil May Cry mixed with Geometry Wars, with really shit controls, then you might want to rent it or something. I guess.
