Judgement Day: Too Human Demo Up Now!

i remember somebody on gaf was making fun of resistance for its cynical blend of ww2 and space aliens -- except that resistance is a good game, and it makes perfect sense when you're playing it. too human's cynical blend of fantasy rigmarole and bald space marines makes no sense whatsoever and is completely fucking hilarious. it shuttles between incompatible cliches with disorienting speed -- if suda51 had done this it would be brilliant

Drohne, are you ABSOLUTELY SURE you are hating on the same game that we are hating on?

"Brothers, let's grind these metal atrocities into the ground" is a better line than anything I heard in the game (during gameplay) and I just made it up on the spot.

Don't listen to the haters. They are overreacting. It's a pretty fun game after you learn how the combat works.

Would have been cool with me if he quoted part of an episode of Seinfeld. Frankly couldn't give a shit what a throwaway character like that said.

I think I have to replay the demo just to catch all of the dialogue. Looks like I missed a few gems. :lol

Just played once through doing pretty much everything took 2 hours. Made it to Lvl. 8, Had some armor and a kickass hammer and laser guns.

Controls - Took about 15 minutes to get used to and I had to study the controls picture for about 5 minutes to understand how to work everything. Right analog works the melee you can hold or tap and you can slide in any direction towards enemies. Left/Right trigger are primary/seconday gun controls. Camera angles and camera view can be changed. Otherwise after getting completely used to the controls after a bit of play it became second nature and didn't feel wrong in any way.

Graphics - Average for the 360. Cinematics reminded me of Mass Effect.

Gameplay - Reminds me of a mix between ME + Fable + God of War 2. A bit hack n slash but that was expected. I think the demo gameplay fails a bit because you don't yet have any real skills or powers and good weapons/armor.

Sound - Decent, I think I actually heard some sounds FROM Mass Effect though...

The scene where the enemy thinger was looking at you and you were still in control of your guy was sweet.

A lot of cutscenes but I'm sure that's to flesh out the story in the beginning and they fade off later on.

The cyberspace alternate druid world is pretty cool. The part with the 3 doors, simple yet it has potential maybe if it was more complex.

One thing I didn't like was the character equipment screen wasn't instant its kinda slow switching back and forth from runes to crafts to weapons and armor. Quite a pain considering it seemed like every battle you got a new piece of something that was better than the one before so I spent a lot of time equipping different things.

I died twice once on the hammer guy and another time on the second hammer guy. They seemed to have infinite life or else my guns just didn't do anything, also the first hammer guy glitched on the stairs and stopped moving and I just kept shooting him until he died.

The game was quite fun, don't think I'll buy it but I'm probably going to rent it.

Got to level 7 this time (almost 8). Didn't die this time either :lol.

I like how the weapons & armor you get are so random. last time i was stuck with a 40 dmg greatsword (not what I wanted to use) because the only normal sword I had was a lvl 1 with 1 dmg. This time I got a lvl 5 with 56 dmg. My armor was crazier too. i actually used the crafting mode to make some from the blueprints that dropped. Had bonuses like increased sliding length, armor bonus, pistol dmg, and lots of other buffs. Their is some armor & weapons that lets you equip runes to them, so you pick & choose what bonuses you want at certain times.

Oh, and I found that secret area finally. It's at the end of the demo. Just press a switch on the left, and it opens up. Kill the waves of weaklings before the timer runs out to get the max amount of loot in there.

EDIT: the post just above this one is good too!

I'll take a break now. Man i wanna get that mid-air melee juggle down. I was hit & miss that last run.

in 700 and something posts, this was the only one that gome me somewhat excited to play the demo...and i was really hoping this would turn out to be a good mid-summer game!

sounds like there is a little more to the game than most posts are suggesting. while a common theme of bad animation and cutscenes seems to be universally agreed upon, combat, story and looting are a mixed bag as of this post.

i cant wait to get home and make up my own mind!!!

my impressions:

wait, right stick to swing the sword? What the hell of a retared decision is this? It really doesn't feel as good as pushing a button, expecially in a hack'n'slash game

animations are surprisingly not bad, but definitely not great. Your soldiers move like puppets, and the hunk guy runs in a simply ridiculous way

camera angles are all over the place; why does the game have to decide that I should stare at a huge statue while running to an enemy, when I certainly can't be bothered to act like a fucking tourist in the middle of a combat?

Lip synch, facial animations, framerate are all really average. Smoke and fog effects are terrible, and the enemies disappear when they're down. Great.

cutescenes..do we really need to go here? Certainly the worst aspect of the whole game

is the game to flunk? Not entirely. But it's average at best, and Dyack should shut the hell up

and nothing will make me change my mind about game's obvious PSX roots

When you go to meet the norns, one of the girls looks like she's talking with a very long swab in her mouth. Very pointy looking lower cheeks. After playing it a couple times now i'm not sure what to make of it. I really enjoyed it the first time. Ater that I felt more of a hold on the combat. Well straying away from just swaying the right stick. I think it was still fun. Though i'm worried about if i'll be able to go through that for the whole game without loosing the fun aspect. Lastly the story (the saving grace for me buying the game) doesn't seem as great as I expected. Though after the gametrailers vids that was kind of expected. However with all said i'll still get it, probably not in a hurry though.

I was more a fan of the glass gun. More for aesthetic purposes since I was going for a one handed sword wielder with rapid-fire handguns. Could go giant hammer with assault rifle next time to see what I can do with those.

whoa i can't see the bottom

SHUT UP SOLDIER OR YOU'LL BE DOWN THEREEE

I thought that was a funny line :lol. My fav of the random dialogue was halfway through.

"Out of 500 platoons, why were we chosen?"

"Isn't it obvious"

"It's because sir Baldur hates us, isn't it?"

Well it went something like that :P

Alright, just put in a solid hour or so with the demo. My first thought after finishing it is damn I wish they were able to get Unreal Engine working.

It just feels like SK had to spend so much time working on the engine that the game could never get optimized. Animations are pretty rough, lip syncing is an afterthought and the frame rate is very jerky in cut scenes and in heavy battle sequences. The aesthetic has so much going for it, its really unfortunate because these performance hiccups take you right out of the action.

Speaking of getting taken out of the action, how man of you guys repeatedly used the Right Stick to adjust your camera only to have Baldur flail his sword around. I had to force myself to just leave the RS alone until combat. The camera just doesn't work.

All the loot/outfit stuff is pretty cool, but I really enjoy grindathons in jrpgs as well, so take that with a grain of salt. Combat wasn't all that fun. You just kinda flail RS around. Nearly every enemy is a one hit kill with the sword so the gun was pretty useless. There are nice effects with explosions, etc. The game just isn't fun to play.

One thing that I thought was really solid was the soundtrack. Great music.

Overall, I just think the transition to their own engine hurt this game a lot. Just doesn't feel optimized at all, like its a game still a few months out that will get a hand full of runs over to polish it up. It has some new ideas and the Norse mythology is something we haven't seen much of, but I think I'm going to pass on this one. If the game does well enough, hopefully SK will iron out all the problems like the control scheme and camera in the sequel.

After all the ruckus that went down because of the preview/reviews, I guess it turns out that most of them were spot on with both their criticisms and praise.

You mean the game gets fun after I learn how to point my right stick in the right direction?

Should they delay it and work on it? Should they release it and patch it? Can it be fixed with a patch?

The Game has a ton of flaws. Whether the janky combat, the terrible art(Its on the level of the humans in Metroid Prime ) or the most annoying gameplay decicions

For instance the Valkarye death thing Neat the first time around, after a while its just annoying and unskipable. And you tend to die in this game.

Its not all that bad. Some enviroments look great, and the loot system is fleshed out well.

My initial thoughts

- right stick not being able to move camera in 3ps is epic fail, you just need to be able to spin it round.

- Moving UI on screen made me feel a bit sick if im honest. This needs to be static.

- Combat with the right stick feels wonky, should be able to slice up bots with the sword as fast as you can shake the stick, other wise why is this not mapped to a button? Makes no sense.

- In the opening with big ship / giant tank - what up with nothing being to scale? Windows dont match door sizes etc, just looks odd to me. If the doors on the back of the tank are normal sized doors as implied when it passes through and you see the main character, why are the windows made to look tiny and like its a mile or so away.

- Entering first dungeon, theres a picture on the floor of some gods or something, thing is its so low res it just looks like a ps1 outing, why not make this nice and high detail if its going to be a focal point for the camera. Just makes the game look bad.

I want to like this I really do ( I completed two worlds lol) just lots of bad out weighing the good right now.

game is ok, the combat isn't very good in the demo and the animations need work, honestly? It seems as if denis would have been wise to keep camera control on the R stick and attacks on the face buttons, it would allow for a lot more fun than this.

I don't see what's wrong with the story outside of a bit of the nerdy 'flair' they try to add.

ahhh, u just know that a game is in trouble when some compassionate people try REALLY hard to dissect it and try to salvage some pros (most of which are not gameplay elements).

i haven't played the demo, but i honestly hope for Dyack's sake that the game gets better further in (when released) when the player has more skills and equipment in his arsenal.

This thread would have been so much better if everyone agreed to give glowing impressions no matter what. It would have been such a mindfuck for anyone coming in expecting to see all hate.

That said, I can't wait for the official Too Human thread.

I really really wished the demo deserved love but it just doesn't. I was really excited for Too Human, I was hoping for a next gen PSO, but this game is pretty medicore. Not bad, just not as great as it was being built up to be.

Thats what i'm hoping, along with if a sequel happens they address and correct some things.

lol i'm stuck at the opening menu. Tells me to press start. And start does nothing. Tried 4 controllers. Hmm maybe i'll redownload.

I want to like it...I wish the right stick thing felt good but it doesn't. Maybe at higher levels it makes sense?

I'll agree the animations are bad in places. My favorites were when running while camera is panning to a side view and when you shoot your guns the first time. The running animation looks like a JRPG.

I might cancel my preorder. I actually was still hyped about this game after GAF and Dyack threw down but this demo is rough. If I hear some things I dislike are fixed maybe I'll pick it up later.

Presentation and music are top notch.

Heh, why? As I was playing the demo it really occurred to that its inherent meh-ness would pretty much diffuse the entire neg-hype around the game. I doubt the Official Thread will be much fun at all. No one's going to buy the game just to hate on it. The Review thread might have some laffs, but there's nothing horrifically bad enough in this game to sustain anything more than a week more of scrutiny. Unless Denis does something else to capture GAF's imagination, I don't expect we'll be hearing much about Too Human come August.

I'm being honest about my thoughts if you're talking about me. Could I name flaws? Of course I can, no game I have ever played is perfect, and this game is no exception. There is slowdown in some areas. Some character models are far from perfect, but they don't look omg horrible. But I genuinely think the battle system is fun when you ty to play around with it, and you understand that your not even past level 10 in this dem0, and we haven't seen anything yet. I think the overall graphics package, and music is pretty damn good

edit: and the camera issue is a legit complaint. You have to press the left bumper once in a while to center it, but I recently played NG2, so camera issues I can deal with, as people who have played it can attest.

wat

I haven't bought a game since GTA4 and the last thread I started in Gaming was for Rock Band 2, and that's only because I'm lobbying for Soul Coughing DLC. I don't get it...

you come first on my mental list of too human boosters -- but it's to your credit that you didn't persist in the face of the demo. high five. if gafers in general made such quick work of cognitive dissonance, this forum would have like half as many posts

Melee on right stick had been epic fails in every game that utilizes it. It was just dumb to make that decision.

Just finished the demo and I really enjoyed it.I was excited for this game and it seems like it will be alot of fun.Combat was good the sword /gun stuff worked well knocking guys up and juggling them with the gun was fun it kind of had a DMC feel to it.

Obviously this is just a demo but just from the beginning of the demo to the end you could tell by the little bit you can upgrade just how much it opened up the battles it will be interesting to see what a character with alot more unlocked can accomplish.

I kind of wish the team AI did more I found it did get tough in some battles when there were swarms of enemies and essentially it was just you fighting them all but as I learned moves I found flowing in and out of combos and combat was a breeze.

Only complaint I think I would have was in the cutscenes one thing that kind of bothered me is how little emotion the characters showed in their faces and as someone who is studying game design that almost always stood out and distracted me from the cutscenes I don't know lol maybe it's just me.

Animation wise alot of people seemed to rag on it but it really isn't that bad, yeah some could be tweaked but overall it isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be.Anyways overall I found it enjoyable and I think Dennis did a good job for Niagara here

I liked the gameplay better than I would have thought. It actually plays alright and I can see why people might like it - especially in co-op play I would imagine.

The graphics weren't good though (except for the backgrounds) - the character faces reminded me of "Gun" for some reason or some other upscaled Xbox1 game.

What annoyed me the most were the invisible walls this game has. My nordic god can't walk through small bushes and jump into battle from the balconies?

All in all it played better than I would have thought, but it's not an AAA game - still slightly "against" I'm afraid.

Finished playing the demo and thought it was pretty fun. The loot was pretty awesome and I already started geting Diablo 2 flashbacks as I started collecting all the items. I have no problem with the combat because I dont see it as being any different then Diablo. I think some people here just have so much time invested in hating this game that there was no way they were going to be able to like it.

Picking up for sure next month!
