Kitase: Would people REALLY want a FF6 remake with turn-based battles?

But the DS version of FFIV is an infinitely better game than the PSP version of FFIV.

I agree. And ironically, as far as this conversation is concerned, they added in an auto-battle command in FFIV DS and it makes the game so much better when grinding for leveling up. You can assign one command to every character and then hit and it just repeats it for you. Can put Attack on everyone, Jump on Kain, Pray on Rosa and hit auto-battle and grind 99% of battles way faster than normally. Much more enjoyable than manually selecting "attack" 10x per battle in 1,000 battles.

Persona doesn't sell over 200k.

200k worldwide? Source? I remember something between 500k and one million for Persona 4.

People said FFXIII-2 was a horrible disaster at retail and it sold somewhere between 2 and 3 million supposedly; which is somewhere around tied with or slightly above Deus Ex: Human Revolution and The Witcher 2.

Persona is way, way, way more niche than most people on NeoGAF realize.

Of course Persona 4 is niche. But that's not due to the battle system but to all the other japan centric stuff in the game and the fact that it is a dungeon crawler.
My point was that even though Persona 4 is very niche plus it had a turn based battle system on top, it still sold relatively well. The same battle system applied to a mainstream FF game won't involuntarily lead to bad sales.

They literally tried this with 4 Heroes of Light. It sold so poorly that they didn't even want to localize Bravely Default. That's the reality guys. Let that sink in, and then form an opinion around those facts.

I dunno. I generally liked old school FF games, and the vast majority of what I buy, even now, are turn based games, but I rate Heroes of Light as "okay". Do we know if it was actually designed as a Final Fantasy game ? Its got a few references to them here and there but they are opaque enough they wouldn't be copyright/trademark actionable.

And a lot of the classes feel kind of out of place for FF and several of the mainstays are also missing. It feels like a FF homage that was then bought up and had the FF name slapped onto it in a lot of ways.

I mean I don't think its a bad game but it doesn't strike me as a modern Final Fantasy either.

Auto battle is in the PSP version as well. I agree it makes grinding a bit better but I can't agree that FF IV DS is the better games. FFIV Complete Collection was fantastic. The sprites, music and prerendered backgrounds were brought up to date brilliantly.

Yeah. That part sucks but it doesn't really have much to do with being turn based or not. Its the resource conservation problem. Interesting stuff tends to cost MP or require timing consideration, and random encounters aren't worth it , so random battles are boring. There really does need to be some work on making resource conservation for boss battles less of an optimal strategy if you want interesting turn based games.

speaking of handheld square titles, do they even have any new titles in development for either vita, 3ds, or even iOS?

or are they banking on FFXV to bail them out financial hardship when they release that game 4 years from now?

turn battles are the problem with the game.

random battles are the stupidest game design of the rpg genre and need to never happen again.

I don't know, I used to want a remake but seeing Square's recent output I'm a bit afraid of what they would do to my beloved Final Fantasy VI, even if they kept the original battle system...

I definitely don't need to it to be like "Amano art" per se... there is a lot of insane, whispy stuff in those out-of-game artworks that probably won't work in 3D. But think of the character portraits. Those were relatively adult faces, not plump Precious Moments dolls, and I do think of the characters that way.

Perhaps there is a middle ground. Actually when I think of a character like Princess Garnet in FFIX, that's kind of a middle ground between SD and realistic.

FFIX is a good example of the progress SE made with 3D that gen. 3DS and Vita are capable of a lot more. It'll never happen, but I'd love to see SE throw all their weight behind a next-gen RPG without aiming for realism in character models, just to see how that works out. It's part of the appeal of JRPG's to me that the character models aren't a realistic depiction of real humans but more in line of characters from comics or animation. Hirō Isono's (RIP) designs for Secret of Mana are a great example and I'm sorta missing that from SE in recent years.

You know, if he's specifically talking about an ATB sytem with a command selection oriented system in the past ages, the games that had it were FFIV-FFIX and Chrono Trigger.

Maybe he's making a Chrono Trigger reboot or the next Chrono game.

Yes, absolutely. I was really excited about versus XIII, when they first revealed it, but then I found out about the battle system and was put off again and I'm still not hyped for it. I'm just too old for real-time battle system and it gets too chaotic for me. I'd love a main FF title with a proper turn-based system again.

If people wanted a new Chrono game, they should have bought more.

No! If it's a remake, update the gameplay too.
Make it more dynamic, ala FFXII or FFXV (not like FFXIII please).

Please dot it! PLEASE!
Just release a version like FF IV PSP version, but maybe in HD this time (for Vita). That would be so beautiful. And since this is a remake, why wouldn't players accept it?

Hasn't FF IV PSP sell well?

For sure.

Guess I'll hold off on playing the original for now (got quite far a few years back but my save got corrupted).

Lost Odyssey is a fairly praised JRPG from this gen, and it's really not different from FF6 in any major way gameplay way. I didn't like it because of the story and technical issues but it clearly works just fine now.

Also fuck you Kitase for even asking that.

Edit: You know what, this has negated some of my FFXV and KH3 hype, I now realize once again Square Enix is out of touch with gamers.

God Squeenix this is everything we are asking for for more than a decade!

How can they not see this themselves? Final Fantasy was a constantly growing Franchise until Final Fantasy X, since then they try to change so much only to dissapoint every time (FF XII was a great game, but not because of the battlesystem)

Have they ever made a real old school (machanics wise) Final Fantasy that didn't sell well? No, they had success until 10 an then never tried it again, assuming that people don't want it.

Get yourself together Squeenix and make a game Like FF VI and you will see that people will buy this Game!

I'd be interested, but it's definitely not needed in that game. The art already suits it very well, and I think you run the risk of taking away a lot of its charm.

mister kitase don't you work in the same company as that dragon quest thing

surely you know the answer to this

...

Still holding out for FFV 3DS first though!

Not by todays square, no.

What? You'd rather have nothing, where this game falls further into obscurity on a system no one plays anymore? An entire generation of gamers (possibly two generations now?) have never experienced this game, and you want to deny it to them because you think that the current square's remake might be less than PERFECT?

Personally, I'd love to see this title remastered on a new system, or even better on a DLC service. I bet it'd sell fairly well.

The remake I want is 7 but I don't want updated visuals only anymore. Just make a brand new game and base it on the original. You can change the combat system and do whatever, just keep the characters and story intact besides updating the translations and I want them voice acted.

They should give it a fast paced battle system like X-2, then I would be happy.

Also, BRAVELY DEFAULT Kitase!

we do it

It's funny that Kitase brought up FF6. I was just saying to my wife (we're both big FF6 fans) that of all the Final Fantasy character most deserving of a spin off it should have been Terra.

They should have Platinum games do a Bayonetta style combat system action RPG starring Terra against a previous unknown coven of espers trying to take over the world.

You'd need to keep the same battle system speed and maintain the charm the original had with expressive characters, etc. The music would need to be handled properly as well, with Uematsu at least providing oversight.

I don't really trust S/E to do that at this point.

Put me down for YES. I want Final Fantasy to return to the ATB system. Lets get 4-5 characters in a party again and have strategy in battles again. Not this 3 person party, fast paced button masher crap that FF13 was most of the game.

I would love to see this happen yes.
They can try new, action oriented battle systems with new IPs and new FF entries.
