Kitase: Would people REALLY want a FF6 remake with turn-based battles?

If you want to just be stubborn and whine and pretend like they should fund expensive games even if no one is buying it, then go ahead.

They literally tried this with 4 Heroes of Light. It sold so poorly that they didn't even want to localize Bravely Default. That's the reality guys. Let that sink in, and then form an opinion around those facts.

They don't have to chase first person shooters, but they do have to make a product that stands a reasonable chance of being profitable.
They tried what? A low budget Final Fantasy spinoff released with absolutely no fanfare? If there really is no future for turn based games on consoles, why are they bothering to release FFXHD? That will be a better barometer for whether or not menu based games can remain in Final Fantasy.

And ultimately, yes, I will be stubborn and whine. I won't support shit like this. The fact that Kitase actually asked this is very bothersome.

S-E still makes turn based RPGs.
For home consoles?

EDIT: You can really tell who actually read the interview and those who just read the topic title.

They're doing FFX HD because the budget for making it is nowhere near as much as a new turn based FF game.

But you're right, that will be interesting to see how it sells. Good point.

I don't want a next-gen remake of FFVI. I want a next-gen Final Fantasy that borrows from everything that made FFVI great.

  • Large, decently developed cast
  • Fast turn-based combat
  • Unique character skills AND customization
  • An engaging story that doesn't focus around just one character
  • A villain worth killing
  • Other things I can't think of right now...

Going away from turn based battles is one of the major reasons why I hate Square now. That and their retarded ass "magic" systems they have going on.

If they keep it as simplistic as FFVI, it would not work.

Look at the bigger picture. People have moved on to stuff like Mass Effect and Skyrim. They didn't all rush out and get Dragon Quest and Lost Odyssey. No one rushed out to buy 4 Heroes of Light either! Ironically, I did.

While there are always vocal niches that like turn based, I think most people would find it boring. JRPGs got criticized all throughout the late 90s for not evolving at all, and now people think they should go back to that?

People have short memories.

He's not wrong. The future right now is in action RPGs, and so is the vast majority of the market. Why do you think he's saying this? He's made many turn-based RPGs. He doesn't hate them. He's just not blinded by nostalgia.

That said, I think turn based can work fantastically in games that are more complex than FFVI. For example, X-COM did pretty well, and Valkyria Chronicles is a cult classic. I think they could make Final Fantasy Tactics 2 on consoles and keep it turn based and it would be amazing.
I agree they have to modernize the turn-based system, but the strategic turn-based style of combat is what JRPG fans want.

Also they will never appeal to mainstream western gamers with effeminate character designs and over the top anime style action.

the fear is overwhelming me

What's wrong with FFV on iOS?

Judging by their previous iOS remakes, fuck NO!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

Not for iOS pls!

Only if it's for the 3DS/PSVita and maybe the home console.

Otherwise, if it's iOS only, not particularly interested.

FFIV DS is still my favorite version over the PSP collection and iOS.

YESSS, but only if it's not that ugly iOS-looking shit.

Keep everything else the same.

Full-test HD remake? Amazing(ly unlikely.)
Something like the DS remakes? Rad as heck, please do it.
Fugly iOS/Android remake? I'd rather not.

YES! YES! OH GOD YES! It's only my favorite entry in the series. But please don't iOS it.

On 3DS, yes.

On mobile, no.

if they remake it for ps4 yes. if they make it for handheld/mobile, no.

For iOS, no.

For PS360WiiU, yes.

In super deformed visuals, no.

In HD with FXIV/FFXIII visuals, yes.

Square: Ahhhh... iOS it is!

For PS4? yes
For mobile/browser? FUCK NO

If they are smart, they would give Eidos a chance to create numbered FF game.

Bolded needs to be overstated.

Would I buy FFVI if it were made for a current gen console, ala PS3/360/PS4? Hell yes, and I would buy a $150 Collector's Edition of it too.

And just because they keep it turn based doesn't mean it has to be exactly as it was, either. They can retain the same basic ideas behind VI's combat (Esper summons, equipping espers to learn magic, each character's personal special attack types, etc.), but tweak it/speed it up/improve it.

Shit, I'd go all in on pre-orders for CE editions of current gen / PS4 remakes of VI, VII and IX without the slightest hesitation, at whatever silly CE price they charged.

If it were remade on a handheld? Would probably never bother.

The question is not whether it is turn based. It is whether Square still has the magic left to remake FF6 into current gen graphics and still make the game feel epic with glorious Amano style art and everything.

FFVI on either present or new-gen consoles would look ridiculous, assuming they kept the overall atmosphere intact. And of course they'd need Uematsu to approve the soundtrack.

So yes, absolutely.

I would LOVE to see a new, remixed version of FFVI to be honest. I played the original right after playing Chrono Trigger and it just felt insipid and long-winded in comparison. They could maybe fix the pacing during the second half to make it feel more coherent and less like a chore.

The music was great, though. A remixed OST would be amazing.

Actually the question is whether it's turn based. FFIV was just an example. He could be talking about any generic turn based game.

Does a turn based system still work on a next-gen, HD, AAA game?

How's about getting current-gen-from-last-gen games out the door first?

Honest snark out of the way, turn-based RPG combat can't be out-dated due to how "modularized" action combat has gotten this generation IMO. It fits right in, both in tone and with the PR aims of his choice of words...

His somewhat black-and-white and dismissive view on the matter is kind of unfortunate.

Lots of great, exciting turn/command-based RPGs out there, and I'm sure there's plenty of room for more. I feel there's bigger issues and potential obstacles with the series than the combat.

Is this a serious question? A lot of fans would love this. A real remake on an actual console, NOT that iOS trash. Announce it and I'll be dancing mad.

The battle system would have to be changed or tweaked heavily. It's the one area FF6 has aged extremely poorly, the combat is snooze inducingly boring and mindlessly easy. The problem isn't it being turn based though, you can make interesting turn based battle systems.

Well played lol

I personally would LOVE to see what they come up with. Over the course of 9 or 10 iterations, they were able to take a rather bland concept and evolve it into something engaging and that worked well in conjunction with several OTHER ingenious systems involved in those respective games. I think it'd be MORE important to have some unique and deep systems like that to support a classic ATB infrastructure for battles.

That being said, I don't think the current stock of gamers would receive it well from a sales standpoint. Sure, all of us old school Final Fantasy fans would LOVE to play these games but even the sales for the mobile and digital versions of these games don't sell particularly well. This might have SOMETHING to do with emulation, but I doubt it. I think this is because the younger or newly assimilated gamers don't enjoy this type of game. It always was the geekier crowd who loved Final Fantasy for most of its iterations.

Trying to improve on something that's perfect!!!!

yeah no.

Stop trying to "breath new life" into things that need to be left alone. Last time someone tried that we got Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus.
Finish a game sometime this year, like 13Vs... oops I meant ff14... oops I meant ff15.
and learn to count.

I can never fathom how Square fans begs for ff7 and 6 remakes. Why?
What the game was famous for would be thrown out of the window. How are you supposed to show 1997 breakthrough console graphics, innovative design, and superb advancement in Role playing games through current gen standards?
Younger gamers, or anyone who has never played the original would easily say "I dont get why this game is praised".

Kitase: People really want a Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
Fans: Yes!! We've been crying for years.
Kitase: Well, don't dry your tears, fuck you!

Kitase: Do people really want a FFVI remake with (traditional) turn-based combat?
Fans: Yes, please, remake FFVI!
SMT: FUCK YES, I'm too lazy to play real-time hip rpgs nowadays! AM CRY
Kitase: What were we talking about? Oh yes, FUCK YOU!

Christ what a horrible "question". I WANT turn based games. I'm loving Persona 4 (my first Persona) partially because it is turn based (or you can make it be). Sure it isn't ATB but it's still turn based.

If they took FF7 (I'll use that instead of 6 as it's my favorite) and removed the turn based gameplay I would be extremely upset. For me it's part of the appeal. I don't get why RPG developers thinks gamers don't want turn based games anymore. I guess maybe the masses don't, which makes me sad.

That said, FF15 looks amazing.

In an interview with Jeremy Parish from USGamers, Yoshinori Kitase asked him this:

The question was asked inside a bigger question regarding a potential return of the classic turn-based ATB-style Final Fantasy.

My answer:

Fuck. Yes.

YES to the maximum extent of possible yesness.

I like the direction FFXV is going just from watching the video, but I really dont want all FF offline games to go that way, or watered down menu based combat like XIII.

They should have an option for turned based, and something like FFXII or Crisis Core.
Some days, I just want to do all the work in my mind, and press a button afterwards.
Screw fast thinking!

I would love this! No, it's more than that. A Final Fantasy 6 remake WITHOUT ATB battlesystem is a NO-BUY, simple as that.

I wouldn't mind if they used the Grandia 1 (PSX) battle system, though.

That's really the only other RPG battle system that I would be ok with, IF they really had to get rid of the ATB system.

Anthing else is UNEXPECTABLE.

I certainly would like a new, original Final Fantasy with turn based battles better (what have they done with FF15? :( ).
Still, a full 3D remake/reinterpretation of FF6 would also be welcome. If it doesn't come out right I can still play the original, no harm done.

Want to know what they mean by "next-gen" game. I've seen too many terrible attempts to improve turn based games by adding overly obnoxious real time elements. But assuming he doesn't mean that I'm going to have to Learn to Combo or Dodge in real time to play the game then my answer is Hell Yes.

It really is time. I think FFVI deserves a modern game that helps new generations to experience this amazing story. It's been nearly 20 years... I bet a lot of self-described old school FF fans were too young for it!
