Konami: Internal Discussions regarding Switch games, namedrops Castlevania

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. It's clear Bomberman R was a low budget effort to have a token launch title on Switch due to Nintendo frowning upon late ports during the launch window. It had no business selling as much as it did and caught Konami with their pants down all the way to their ankles.

Also, this interview makes it obvious Konami had absolutely nothing planned for the Switch post Bomberman.

At least Konomi bothered to have a low budget launch title. Cant say that about most other publishers.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but after Bomberman R...

What if the Switch is the beginning of their grand ressurection? What if Castlevania the Animated Series opens the doors to Gradius on Netflix and new games?

Dare I dream? Or
is it still fuck Konami?

"People don't want Castlevania games, but because we recently announced a Castlevania series for Netflix, people now want Castlevania games."

That's what I read.

It would be awesome if we got another 2D Castlevania game on a console. If Konami does release a new Castlevania game, I hope it's that. Nothing against the 3D games in the series, but Castlevania shines at its best when it's 2D.

I'll repost my Dream Scenario from the Legacy Collection thread.

Konami Vol. 3: Castlevania
Haunted Castle (AC)
Castlevania (NES)
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES)
Vampire Killer (MSX)
Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES)
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (PCE)
Castlevania: Bloodlines (MD)
Castlevania (X68k)
Castlevania: The Adventure (GB)
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (GB)
Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth

[and all the other smart, comprehensive collections this guy compiled]

This dude knows wtf is up. Criterion mentality... none of that "idc about obscure entries and just want a bunch of random unrelated, thematically/generationally inconsistent games thrown together" nonsense that makes my eyeball twitch.

I'd also like the PSP 2.5D remake of Rondo thrown into the CV one for good measure, though. Finally cleave it free from the bordered Rondo and iffy SotN unlocks it's attached to. Same for the arranged PS1 version of X68K... just cleave it free from it's conjoined form, so that it's an isolated version and isn't creating any redundancies in content or file size.

I plan on getting a Switch someday when it's convenient for me to, but I'd be the biggest pillar of salt if a Castlevania collection like this was exclusive. If it was just a new Castlevania, Metroidvania or whatever, I can understand and get around to it in due time.

Castlevania is so getting announced during Nintendo's digital event.

God I hope you're right.

There's such a strong history between Castlevania and Nintendo handhelds (console too, but I personally think the run of games from Harmony of Dissonance to Order of Ecclesia is the best series run) that a new outing on Switch would be fire.

I laugh at the fact that people only started the Fuck Konami thing because of Kojima despite the fact they'd be pulling the same shit for their other developers for years before that.

All I care about is whether they're releasing games I want and with Bomberman they did. If they release a decent/good Castlevania they will have done it again.

Yeah, if I had bailed when Iga's Castlevania got shafted so that Konami could do Lords of Shadow (ironically, the game that got fully fast-tracked with Kojima's backing), I would have missed out on some pretty good Konami games. They crossed a threshold when the company expressed clear disinterest in producing games I want, though, and it'll take real work to come back from that.

...people pretending like the last two years never happened just so they can play Castlevania again. But hey, I guess Fuck Konami is Forgive Konami now.

I mean, Fuck Konami and all that, but ultimately, you have to ask, what's in it for me to hold a grudge?
You get the pride of saying "fuck you" to a company (which doesn't mean a lot to them since those execs have already turned their backs on you,) you get to save your dollars (which isn't much since, again, the execs have practically pulled out of our market,) and you also get to be part of the reason why these execs find justification in leaving consumer games (and keeping their jobs as they make more and more casino machines) and putting the final nail in the coffin of all of those great Konami and Hudson brands.

Or...

True enough, Konami Corp deserves to be scoured for how badly it handled Kojima and how it directed its corporate interests into parlor games ... but it's a BIG company, and slagging every aspect of the company for the sins of the Execs is at some point not fair to those trying to stay afloat.

All of these comments we've been reading from "Konami", for example, have been coming from the American Konami office, which was not at all involved in the Kojima fallout (they lost staff too as the LA office dissolved) and has no interest in casino games (I believe they have a separate Konami Amusement office.) They're making these comments because, behind the scenes, they're battling for survival and are doing everything they can to A) sell the few bits of actual consumer games that Konami is still putting out and B) to convince Konami Japan to figure out what it's doing and not abandon gaming. (Partly for their own jobs, but also because Konami is a legacy company with great brands and even some good developers still stuck in the system.) They don't deserve the "Fuck Konami" lines; they're trying in whatever ways they can (small as though their efforts likely are to the top brass) to make a comeback and provide something like what gamers expect out of Konami. I'd actually be in favor of Konami America making a run at producing titles (I assume they were instrumental in the Castlevania Netflix series and also might have had a hand in relationships that led to Bomberman R) and taking over consumer game development handling if Konami Japan continues to shirk it off.

Similarly, Seabass's team is working consistently on PES. They can't go independent (there will probably never again be an independently produced sports game with a pro license,) and they can't abandon their post and expect there to be jobs elsewhere. They've got shitty bosses, but their work is still important.

Back when Konami imploded, we never thought something like Bomberman R would ever happen again. Now, it's a small thing, but the message it is hopefully sending to Konami execs is, "You were wrong to quit on us. We need you to run your company better, you fucks, because we still care about the Konami legacy even if you don't."

Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate HD for Switch confirmed.

(I'm actually currently playing through MoF for the second time on PC and genuinely think it's a good, if flawed, game, but this would be hilarious trolling)

Konami has a lot of properties I'd love to see revived. After the success of Bomberman on Switch I actually expected them to release another game that similarly has retro ties. They can keep a fairly small budget and still produce a really good game that the Switch audience will eat up (if done correctly). Obviously Castlevania is the series at the top of the list.

I mean, I wasn't really talking about them getting back into AAA development? So much as people pretending like the last two years never happened just so they can play Castlevania again. But hey, I guess Fuck Konami is Forgive Konami now.

As long as they make games I want why should I go fuck konami?

Konami's decision to pretty much abandoning dedicated gaming development was one of dumbest decisions ever made in the history of any well-known publisher. They are now realizing the stupidity from their short-sightness. Ok, better late than never, but they'll have a hard time to fix the damage from that decision and will take a long time to become the once top-notch publisher they once were.

I hope they bring back more of their IPs for Switch. Exclusive Castlevania, Contra and Goemon would be a good idea. Don't know if MGS or ZOE without Kojima would be a good idea at this point.

The bold part..... since when did they ever said that lol. They mostly said that they are abandoning AAA gaming space lol.

And seeing how more successful they are in Japan compared to both square and capcom shows that they actually knows what better for their company more than just some gamers lol.

Please start with a classic Castlevania collection and then get M2 to make a new game like they did with the awesome The Adventure ReBirth.

If it's gonna be some garbage like the LoS games though, please don't bother.

Good for Konami starting to get their shit together though. Sure pachinko prints money, but sitting on beloved IPs while doing nothing else with them isn't good business.

I'd happily take those. Hopefully we get multiple from that list in the Switch life.

Give M2 another go at it, ReBirth was the last one that was any good. And it was very good.

Hell, just start out by porting all 3 ReBirth games to Switch in a collection with a retail release. They were underplayed anyway, being WiiWare games, and it would probably do fantastic.

New Castlevania
New Contra
New Goemon
New Gradius
New Suikoden
New Sparkster / Rocket Knight
New Vandal Hearts

Let's go

Added some more ;-)

(Interesting in hindsight how both of these actually did get a new game not too long ago but that both were outsourced to western devs who only managed to deliver two very lacklustre games...)
