Kotaku: Silent Hills officially cancelled

Why would Kojima need the Silent Hill IP ?
At this moment, it would be best for him to create his own dev house and make a partnership with a publisher that can bank the project with Guillhermo Del Toro.
It could be the same game, but with a different name.

Sure the blame for this lies with Konami. But lets not forget that for the last decade Del Toro has been a death sentence for big projects. That guy is way overrated and seems to be cursed as well.

Time to lock myself in my flat, open up a tub of ice cream and cry myself to sleep.
I guess I never did play Silent Hill 4 though... that might suffice.

Out of all the bizarre gaming news I've heard in the past few years this one makes the least amount of sense.

I don't know what to say... FUCK

Who would be surprised if it actually looked more like: Now we're not spending tens of millions of dollars on AAA games and can keep focusing on products with higher returns. Kojima was expensive. MGSV was expensive. Silent Hills was going to be expensive. Can you imagine how well Konami took Kojima telling them, "I want to work with [high profile director] and [actor gaining lots of traction] on a niche title."

Bullshit, why the fuck did they even greenlight Silent Hills in the first place?

They should have known that a high profile director and actor cost money.

That whole thing is almost impossible.

I just ordered P.T. to my PSN Account.

Even though I don't have a PS4 and I doubt I'll get one in the near future.

There really is a "defense force" for everything.

Saying the cancellation isn't a bad thing, this is the other extreme of the crazy fans who believe it's a ruse.

#Konami is trending btw, about 50k tweets.

I wish #FuckKonami was trending.

Unfortunatelly it is, but I really hope someday Guillhermo Del Toro can make his horror game and Kojima can work in....whatever he wants to work.

I do not think all publishers would turn them both down, even if the scale and budget of the project needed to be dialed back.

This would imply that Konami applies basic logic.
One watch of that Jimquisition video (from three years ago) clearly shows that no, no Konami does not use logic when making their business and PR decisions.

Confirming what we already knew. People were quick to say that the deal of Del Toro was between him and Konami and not Kojima. But it was obvious which was the key person in this project. Not to mention the whole bunch of other leads that are going to be let go in December.

Lol I'm sure Sony is lining up to take a massive loss

Yeah like Sony is flowing in cash right now and desperate to acquire established franchises...

Amazing armchair analysis posts.

Bethesda took a loss with The Evil Within, right? And that one didn't even trend worlwide just like Silent Hills has. And it wasn't just because of the franchise, it was because of Kojima, Del Toro and Reedus.

And PlayStation is not one of the pillars of Sony and the leader of the current gen?

Bethesda can afford the loss on evil within

Yeah, this is what I feel like doing right now. Granted, the game could have been underwhelming, but the potential was amazing, and now we will never know :(

Fuck you, Konami.

PT was seriously the best horror game (or teaser) in years. It was fucking brilliant. And now you tossed it. Fuck you.

Bethesda can afford the loss on evil within

And Sony can't? Pretty sure The Order didn't do well in sales, and I don't see RAD closing down or laying people off. EDIT: And the point was that the Evil Within did well, people being initially interested in it because it was from the creator of Resident Evil.

Pretty funny that people trusted Konami about this at some point, I'm glad you are all disappointed, you deserve it

not will be able to d/l it after the date. read it'll be gone from the servers entirely.

That's so rare it's amazing.

I think the only shit I can think of that's been pulled EVER from the PSN:

Lair Demo
TMNT Reshelled Demo

and this. I'm sure there's a handful of others, but the list is reallllly small.

Ugh... The main reason for my PS4 purchase is officially cancelled yay ¬_¬ Well, at least I enjoyed Alien Isolation a lot, and I'm expecting great things for Batman Arkham Knight, No Man's Sky and FFXV (if lives up to the promises of not-being-like-FFXIII)...

You suck, Konami. Seriously. P.T. was a promising new take on horror games. I hope people doesn't buy MGSV just to make a point, but I'm not counting on it sadly.

Lol. Tell em!

Ok, Konami must be kiddin. They just posted a meme about Silent Hill in their Brazilian Facebook. What a bunch of morons.

Brazilian fans are just throwing shit at their coments.

The meme says:

"Good morning class, today I'll be your teachers replacement "

I'm speechless

Bwahahahaha!

Anyway, it's not like Silent Hill is some lost and forgotten franchise. We just had Shattered Memories last generation and it wasn't terrible. I'm sure we'll see another Silent Hill at the end of this generation, or before mid-point next generation.

It probably just won't have Reedus/Del Toro. Reedus won't matter because he'll be old news by then anyway, and Del Toro has a magic way of imploding most of his recent projects. Probably better off in the long run, this.

I'm curious about this notion of Konami possibly phasing out video games, so I decided to look into things. They have their financial statements available here. Below are the net revenues of each (major?) segment of their business for the first three quarters of the fiscal year that just ended (2015).

I don't know a lot about business and there are other variables, but those figures don't tell me that they would drop video games that quickly. Phase out possibly but not over night. (Which is what I think some have proposed.) I thought it would be good for some actual data to be readily available in the discussion.

Digital Entertainment also accounts arcade and mobile releases. If you look at the data you can see how they have been slowly releasing less and less console games. While they are focusing on arcades and mobile games.

Basically, the investment necessary for the triple AAA development is not worth for a company that can have sustained income in other avenues or ways. For years they have been trying to get that other AAA to accompany Metal Gear Solid and PES, but the result was failure.

They still have their baseball series and, maybe, other licensed niche japanese games, but the fact is that Konami basically given up trying to be relevant in the harsh console space.

I believe all this is accelerating since they won't have Kojima anymore. It was basically their last talented producer/director in which they can trust that kind of money.

My bet is that they will keep MGS and PES until they dry up and then definetly abandon consoles.

i knew people who were only bare aware that something called silent hill existed that ADORED the PT and were interested in the actual game because of it

wow, konami. and after you cancelled megaman legends, too

Can't wait for Book of Memories 2: Revelations: Rise of the Fall of the Dawn of Pyramid Head

Well, I certainly don't believe that Silent Hill can't be good without them. I get that people are sheep and believe that big names = big quality, but even I've speculated about how the game actually would have turned out. I think it would have been awesome, but I question just how "Silent Hill" it would have been. I don't want to turn that into an argument, it's just a personal thought and speculation.

It's not that I need them in order to be hyped about a Silent Hill game. My problem now is just with Konami in general and how they've handled this.

A big problem with the latest Silent Hill games is that they were obviously on a tight budget, particularly Downpour (which I thought had flashes of brilliance). Big names, if anything, mean big money, so I was looking forward to their involvement in that respect.
