EXCLUSIVE: Liam Neeson will star with Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe in Silence, the Martin Scorsese-directed adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel about 17th century Jesuits who to try bring Christianity to isolated Japan. The film is being financed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis, Corsan and A1. Emmett/Furla/Oasis just funded Lone Survivor. The script is by Jay Cocks and Scorsese and production will begin in Taiwan later this year.

It's really happening, isn't it?

I mean, we had to trade DDL and Benicio for Andrew Garfield and Watanabe, but it's happening.

When has "pro-christian" and "scorsese" ever been a thing?

Never really, but his films do have catholic themes sprinkled through them, and he made The Temptation of Christ. It's not like he made a Left Behind film or anything, but I just read the book's synopsis and Christians are totally depicted as martyrs in it. I know it's a part of history and it would be wrong to ignore it, but there's something about a country making a film about the persecution of its most populous religion by the people of another country that makes me uncomfortable.

This is the first film Scorsese has had a hand in writing since Casino.

That's not a good thing.

Scorsese's more likely going to attack feudal Japanese politics than Shintoism, which is a rather uninteresting target anyway (being one of the three major religions Japanese people divide attention to equally). Besides, Shunsaku Endo's a Catholic, so there's nothing like that in his book.

I actually like Garfield. But watanabe and Neeson over del toro and day lewis is kinda whack imo. Although it's great that they got a Japanese guy in here
